As always, I enjoyed this video. Thanks so much to both of you. I always love when Tina/Model T takes part in the automotive videos including those that she does on her own. Tina has developed an ASMR voice that I don't recall from the earlier videos. Or perhaps the microphone on this camera has allowed her beautiful voice to come through. I love Paul's videos as well and the two of you working together is double the benefit for those of us on this end. Paul, you have a way of cracking me up with one-line statements that I'm never expecting. In this video you said "...get your handy Tonya Harding" while hammering the cotter pin. And wham! You brought me back thirty years. Hahaha! Poor Tonya, and after all these years. I think you have subscriber's that hadn't been born when that event took place, which just adds to the amusement. Hahaha! Then you got me again with the "Metallic Cinder Block." Hahaha! And I'd say that Tina knows torque wrenches because it looked like 100 ft. lbs. to me.
The mail truck sure is a beauty. And I like the how you customized the cross bar to protect the paint on the wheels. I'm impressed by your "ingenuity" by affixing a washer inside the lug socket to reduce the depth. Very good.
Wheel bearings were never a favorite job for me, but I'd rather work with front wheel bearings than any job involving rear end oil. The smell of rear diff oil makes me sick, and that smell has a way of getting stuck in my nose.
I'm feeling kind of bad that it's cold and Paul is tired. I'm wondering how cold it was outdoors that night. Being noteworthy, I'm thinking it must be really cold for that part of California. No shop heat for the Shinn's?

lol, yes we have propane heaters but sometimes we’re in such a time crunch to make our videos that we don’t take the time for the set up of heat 😜 It’s been in the lower 30’s in the early mornings and 40’s in late morning and late evening lately.

@@Modeltshinn Thank you for replying. And you're welcome, Tina. The videos that you and Paul put out are worth praising. I had no idea the temperatures got that cold in your area. If it helps, I've been very pleased with an electric furnace that I had installed in my garage. And also pleased with it being operated by a wall thermostat like inside the house. The cost wasn't much for the furnace or for my electrician to install it.

We've had the garage furnace for three years now and it's been 100% reliable. Here in Connecticut, we have set to 60 degrees for the entire winter, and warmer if I'm working out there. The reason is to extend the life of the traction batteries in our Prius, because I learned that batteries do best being in and stored-in a temperature of 60 degrees. It's actually 59 point something degrees, so we go with 60 degrees.
Paul probably got the Tonya Harding hammer reference from Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage with whom Paul is good friends. And of course from the original reference!

Glad you mentioned tape on the 4-way wrench to protect the spokes and a rubber washer in the end of the lug so that the end of the wrench doesn't scratch up the wheels! An old trick that's been published in The Restorer magazine.

It is a great tip! I wish I'd known before I started wailing away with my impact hammer and scratched up my wheels. (Even with rubber padded sockets. They don't cover where it comes in contact with the outside of the wheel.) They really need painting anyway, and I'm about due for tires, so not a big deal.
My Dad, the guy who poured used motor oil on the ground, wouldn’t let me use gasoline on wheel bearings. He was also the same guy who got a mouthful of gasoline while syphoning gas. He was greatest owner of a 1929 Model A I ever knew!

Bearing packers are useful if you pack a lot of bearings or don't how to do it by hand. The bearings were lose. I bet it was noticeable. Love you too Model T!

Very nice video, Mr and Mrs Shinn! Great tip on the lug wrench to prevent scratching paint. Great method on seating wheel bearings. You've come very close to the actual Timken specified method that I previously used (torque to 50 ft lbs, back off, then torque to 10 ft lbs and line up the cotter pin hole). Now I use DRP bearing spacers, so my wheel bearing nuts are final torqued to 40 ft lbs. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, I was one of those folks barking about using gasoline...🙄 What I find works great for cleaning small parts (like bearings) when I am away from my parts washer is to use a peanut butter jar. The current jars are made of some super polycarbonate stuff and are very durable. Just fill it enough to cover the parts (with mineral spirits!) and shake like a martini! No mess, no fuss! Super portable. Yes, I use a bearing packer. And I keep it in the shop fridge. But nothing wrong with hand packing! I am still on the hunt for a cheap '30/'31 roadster pickup. Those words may not go together though! Keep up the videos! Great work!

Love your mail truck. I have a 1927 TT looking for a body, I was thinking army air force. Also like the Viking and Hallicrafters on the shelves. I also have more than a few radios - I'm buying my first model A, a 1929 Fordor, because they are beautiful when well upholstered and pin striped. It's complete but very rough. I'm an auto archaeologist and I like bringing them back from the dead. I'm a retired EE W5yb. I confess to being a Packard man at heart. regards to you both.

I could never count the many times I’ve packed wheel bearings, always by hand. Something I learned when I was about 16. And yes, I sometimes use not-gasoline too. Comes in handy.

Another great video! My 30 Fordor had a bad death wobble around 20 mph when I got it. After I packed the front bearings it went away. So I can attest to this method.

Used to have a 1952 ford truck and it would get the so called death wobble. I would just put on the brakes and it would stop doing that. It usually started by hitting a patch in the asphalt so not a constant thing anyway.
Yes --- Gasoline was the way --- I remember my Dad -- sixty-three years ago cleaning his Indian and the Harley in the back yard. I too even at times find myself using it ---- Thanks for the video ---- Rodney

Beautiful video once again. I'm a certified tech. in that field and usually shimmy is caused by excessive caster. the wheels fighting each other. Loose king pins, wheel brgs. etc. can be the trigger but look to caster for the energy causing the problem. Try raising the radius rod ball somehow or simply raise the back of the truck higher will help. Unfortunitly Fords from that time period only have 1 front spring running side to side so there is no way to play with shims like other cars with 2 springs that run front to back. If the radius rod ball under the bell housing is loose the wheels will wobble at slow speed. Was coming down Mt. Victoria (N.S.W., Aust.) in 2nd, many, many years ago and the police pulled us up because of said wobble. Was able to convince them it wasn't serious and that we would fix it when we got to next town. We saw a lady in her garden and asked if she had an old boot she could give us. We soon had some leather circles cut and installed and on our way again, with a vehicle much more enjoyable to drive, thankful for a bit of uniform motivation and wondering why we had not done it years ago. Ah well, way out, back of beyond it didn't seem to matter all that much.

Great Information! I was hoping this was my problem, but I took my front hubs apart and reseated the bearings as you show, but I still have a horrible wobble, most notable when I'm slowing down to about 15-10 mph. Reseating the bearings had no effect. I've replaced the tie rod and the ends (the tie rod was bent.) Doesn't seem like any play in the king pins. Steering is a F100 and there is virtually no play. I'm a bit stumped so replacing one thing at a time. New bearings next, then maybe drag link. If that doesn't help, then I'll try the king pins. I just hate to pull them all apart when they don't appear to be bad. Any other ideas? Thx!
Your alignment is next. 1/16 to 1/8 of toe in is a must.
@@ModelA Thanks for the reply! I failed to mention that I did check that. I got the alignment tool you had in your video and got it set to 1/16" toe in. I did this after swapping the tie rod,
@@ModelA I finally figured it out. The radius ball was loose in the housing. Apparently, someone installed an after market rubber ball on the radius ball and a larger housing to accommodate it (the plates on the top and bottom of the ball.) The rubber disintegrated, so the ball was loose in that larger housing. Also, the right brake drum is out of round and that contributed to the wobble. Now I need to turn the drums. Getting there... (thank you and thanks to Model T for all these great videos! I honestly would not have jumped into this hobby without all the Model A videos available. I find your videos the most helpful. You're a great ambassador for the Model A community!)
About 50 years ago, when I was rebuilding my first car (a '60 Corvair), my dad brought home some Freon solvent he got from work. Stuff worked about as good as gasoline, and wasn't flammable. Don't know if you can get it anymore.

What if you put the bearing in a plastic bag with grease and pulled a vacuum on the bag pressing the grease into the bearing?
Not sure it would go into nooks and crannies as well? Plus, the ASMR moments would be ruined 😄💕

Safety is necessary but FIXING THE TRUCK is the priority. If you don't fix the truck correctly you may end up in a ditch with broken body parts.

I prefer gas if I must clean the bearing it will air dry. many solvents dont dry and will wash away the grease believe me ive seen it.

I do a lot of 3D modeling in my spare time and I hope to build a 1/6th scale model of this truck and a Model A closed cab truck. I’m just a stickler for accurate dimensions.

I know that this comment doesn't pertain to your current video, however I wanted to know your take on a "Shay" model A. There is someone locally selling one
Well, it’s not a Model A, it just looks like one and a personal preference I suppose…if you don’t care about the vehicle not being a Model A and having engine needs based from the 80’s then it’s all good. Our friend George had a very bad stroke, he had to give up driving the Model A because of the stick shift, the Shay has allowed him to enjoy the Model A fun with everyone because it’s automatic, so there is some value to the SHay in that sense. Well, depending on what’s causing the death wobble, is that really fixing anything by letting some air out of one tire? What ever the issue is still exists and may get much worse and more expensive for letting it go unfixed…best to find out why it has a death wobble and fix the issue 💗 Have a great week!

I was just going to say that I prefer to use gasoline to clean/degrease. It is the way my dad taught me, and it’s the way I will be teaching my kids.
@@ReallyDumbName that’s awesome!! People are worried because it’s combustion, but so many cleaners are combustible or will catch fire in right situations. Just being careful to keep an aired out area, no fire source of any kind around while working with cleaner….you know lol but I guess it’s not common sense to everyone.
