This is pretty interesting as I was wondering how exactly they were able to successfully accomplish this. They are on the right track but all in balance and perfect harmony.

In 20 years they have managed to use up 80% of their underground water supply. It will be gone in 10 years.
What will they do then? They get no rain to refill the aquafuer. Even if they suddenly started getting 30cm of water per year. It would take 10,000 years to even half way refill.
They have more people now then when they started pumping water out of the ground.
They have made their situation worse by having even more people when the water runs out

This effort by Saudi Arabia to increase its food sustainability and utilize arid desert land is admirable. However expending ancient water aquifers that are nonrenewable offers a limited success! At some point these resources will be exhausted and the desert will reclaim these areas! Also buying foreign farmland is questionable since these lands are part of a foreign country and their use is subject to the whims of those governments! Saudi Arabia needs to invest in renewable energy sources and to focus efforts on efficient industries that will allow the country to maintain a healthy economy. It has lots of solar and wind energy plus strategic ports and waterways that it can utilize for economic purposes. With climate warming these deserts will become hotter and more irrigation and water needed! The long term outlook should focus on seeking resources that will generate sufficient funds to import foods. The petroleum industry has a limited lifespan and now is the time to diversify its economic base!

It amazes me that Saudi Arabia will buy farm land in other countries, but if your not a citizen of their country you can’t buy land in Saudi Arabia. I think if Africa nations want to stop their natural resources leaving at pennies on the dollar, they should not let anyone own their land, that was not born there or not a citizen. Drinking water is coming harder to attain for the local citizens because most of it is going to the farms, and the food from those farms is feeding another country. Those foreigners your country is feeding will end up on your soil to take over, while your people starve and are too weak to fight back.

Great project wonder if reverse rivers and floating mangrove based forests can add to the efforts

I thought that a long time ago they were getting into desalination. What happened to that?

All praise to them. The fear that America
And I srael can destroy these efforts like they did in Lybia wrecking Khadafi's tremendous work.

Saudi Arabia has no natural rivers. There is now a new and more affordable way of desalination
I hear little news of its introduction.

America is also tapping ground water at a rate that one day in a not so far future the reservoir will be empty! The same will happen to the Saudis.
