- Time spent filming the passing parade of trams on the corner of Swanson Street and Flinders Street opposite Flinders St station. The year is 1983......plenty of W2s...also some pop art cars.
Later we go to St Kilda outside Luna Park......."How very Melbourne I must say".
UA-cam makes it worthwhile keeping all this footage for so many years.....I give this footage to you all for your enjoyment......Yes not the greatest quality...but ...they are now long lost scenes of Melbourne....I will leave todays filming of this great Tram system to others.....for future generations to enjoy.
Thankyou for viewing....
(Just my small contribution)........
I was 12 at the time 1983 great times to grow up in miss 80s
How awesome are the car sounds?!?! Falcons, XY's, PROPER cars VROOM VROOM!! 80's Melbourne was so awesome. TY for sharing
Brilliant 'contribution' of old Melbourne footage!
I was 18 years old, remember well .. beautiful Melbourne. Thanks for sharing this with us.. I wonder when did they remove police traffic duties ?
Great footage, and great to see the Old Rattlers.
Isn't there a 't' in Swanston?
I miss the old green and yellow trams, i was reminded of the orange ones they used to have too. I dont miss the rattling creaking noises though, even for 1983 that sounded so dilapidated and old, and they kept using them right into the 90s.
Not one person wearing hi viz clothing.
It didn't exist. It wasn't a thing until the '00s
yeah funny how roadworks cripple melbourne nowadays
@@jamesrosevear That might be because there wasn't a major global pandemic happening in 1983
Great to see it like this! I moved to the Riverina in 1978. I could not live there today but it’s great to visit from time to time.
That world is, unfortunately, gone! What a shame, Melbourne was a lovely city! I moved to Ringwood in 1991 and remember the Old Eastland Shopping Centre! I first went to Melbourne's CBD in 1993, I think, and it was sort of the same then, I looked at it and said to myself, "I Love this City! It's Beautiful!" Now I live in Country Victoria and wouldn't move back to Melbourne if you paid me to! My neighbour who used to live at Fountain Gates was carjacked last year outside her own house! That's Bad!
old melbourne town is no more, i'm sad to say.
@Brad Williams "Im not racist, but...."
You're a racist pure and simple based precisely on what you've written
Great post, notice all the older cars, its a reflection of how much people can afford as well, a X section of current $$ & what people could buy, noticed the X 69 Purple & silver SL/E doing the Hook turn as well at the start. :)
'83 was the year afrter I left school. That brings back so many memories. Even back then there was nuffies that casually walked in front of cars. Some things never change.
That's the CLUB CINEMA at far right of this starting video. Just brief time.
Love this i was 15 thanks for sharing
Same. Used to visit the city regularly with mates, looking at shops. If I was lucky I might have enough to buy a bootleg album from Central Station Records, under the old Gas & Fuel building behind the point where the footage was recorded from.
No FED Sq No maccas and cigarette advertising the good ole days
No horse carriages either.
We still have those well as tourist attractions but the city council are putting prsesure on to get rid of them too
mrpuniverse2 and NO anti terrorism bollards!!!
Maccas was further up in the basement of the Nicholas building (formerly Coles Variety). Now Arthur Daleys Clearance when Maccas moved next to Young & Jacksons. Since demolished for Melbourne Metro works.
@fake_Future Federation Square and all that ugly architecture that has ruined the place.
FA7273. Thanks for the video. I left Melbourne in Feb 1983. Just about when you took the video. I havent' been back since. This video bring back memories.
I like the old batman avenue before kennett took it out
I parked in the old Batman Ave queuing for a Grand Final ticket at the Arts Centre the night Jeff got rolled (Sept 18 1999) - he did a lot of bad stuff but Batman Ave is Steve's
whats the timestamp? I couldnt recognize it anywhere
@@FredNerk57 i thought that road closed in june 99
@@Magpie_Mark92 Sept 18 1999 - the day of the Victorian election which Steve Bracks eventually won. Also the day Carlton beat Essendon to earn their spot in the GF the next week. Both were massive upsets. I definitely slept in my car in Batman Ave that night, and joined the queue at the Arts Centre at sunrise. I know the year well because Carlton have not played in a Grand Final since.
I remember Ma's hamburger van outside Flinders street station every night.
I take it this was filmed from the rooftop open space on Princes Bridge Station next to old Gas and Fuel.
Interesting footage of western end of Collins street as well, including the freshly cleared site for the Rialto Towers at 2:33. Robbs buildings at Collins and King corner had just recently been demolished around that time
I remember seeing the cameraman then he’d stand next to the camera smoking as it filmed 😅
Thank You
If you see a mustard coloured 72 charger 245 4 speed extractors, holly 500, that’s me
Great video. No tall buildings at Southbank! Thanks for sharing.
W class trams and the Red Rattlers on the Belgrave-Lilydale line!
Thankyou
Melbourne was a beautiful and great city then. It is still a beautiful but a sleeker world class city now. Don’t forget things look and feel always nicer when you are young and of optimism with an exiting future ahead of you.
Here's another video of old Melbourne taken in 1975:

Thanks for the video mate
It's great to see my old Melbourne from the 80's
I miss it

I was very worried about the police's safety when I watched it
People had respect back then and cops were not such dickheads, maybe?
Great stuff FA7273. Seeing Young & Jackson's back then was very interesting.
Geez, the Young & Jackson's looked pretty drab back then (before the current paintjob)
The Stuyvo's ad up top is the highlight of the building !!!
I miss the W class trams! However, the Gippslander looks much the same, hehe
Before immigration ruined Australia. :(
True.
Lots of seventies family cars still on the road
It's amazing as the 80s progressed how many were disappearing and in their place the small bodies Commodore and downsized XD XF Falcon plus all the 2 litre cars like Telstar Corona Bluebird Pintara and the small ones like Lasers Colts Pulsars and the inbetweener Magna and Camira etc
I travelled north to Qld (yes, the film Travelling North was inspirational)) and never regretted it for a minute.I did make all my money in Melbourne so I wont be too mean.
Wat
A point duty policeman! Must have gotten to dangerous fir them since . Just love this
Great vids. Thanks.
This footage taken from Southern Cross station. I miss the City square, Central station records, 7-11 and Flashback /McDonald's across the road. I lived in St Kilda at that time too. That was my tram stop (#69). Lizzie from Prisoner almost fell into me one day.
The guy standing in the middle of the intersection is a cop directing traffic, BTW. Remember them?
Yes and many police that did point duty got very sick and many died prematurely due to inhaling toxic fumes over many hours a day, and it didn't have to be for a long period either. Even 6 months of traffic was enough to stuff their lungs forever. Fumes mainly from diesel trucks and buses, which is why today, the police only direct traffic in the city when absolutely necessary.
None of those ugly yellow food delivery bikes either.
Is that the elephant and wheel barrow covered in sighs
Thanks for the nostalgia. Just a small one, you forgot the 't' in Swanston
Those orange trams used to make me feel nauseous.
If only we’d still had a policeman on duty in that intersection on 20 January 2017.
I’d say he’d be killed that day
Why, what would he have done in the face of a maniac behind the wheel?
so wish I was alive back then, I don't like my generation, I've always envied the people who grew up back then.
When the city was safe to visit wag school and hang out in the city not anymore
Yep, l was wagging and hanging out in the city between about 1977 and 1982. What a great city it was back then. Felt safe to go anywhere. She was ours then. Now she’s just a pleasant memory.
@@davidwilliams6249 Me too.
@@davidwilliams6249 like a lot of good things from the past...pleasant memories indeed
That copper, dealing with that traffic. Your on your own. Thumbs up though.
@Wong C.T you should come back and visit.
Is the building, at 3:28 on cnr of Collins/Queen Sts? Even though the trams were only a carriage long, they were frequent, & speedy. Then, the drivers answered you, could understand you, & paid you some respect. They don't even stop at all stops anymore, even when there are taxpayers waiting to get aboard. Drivers, & taxi drivers understood 'plain, simple English with no big words in it, AND acknowledged being asked a question, now 'They now just ignore all the waiting passengers, bydriving past them .Parts of Melb still in existence ,despite Mr Richard Wynne, Minister For Demolitions.
where the tail buildings
There were none, or very few.
Swanston - with a "T", but otherwise, good stuff
Where's Young & Jacksons?
It was literally in the first scene. Open your eyes.
You can barely see it under the giant advertising billboards
Can i get a time machine ?2021 and dan has turned melbourne into a wasteland a once beautiful city destroyed by a psychopath.thanks dan !!!!!
The video looks early 80's no doubt...That very spot the lifeblood of the whole strip?!! You can feel that 80's life, exuberance, that certain 80's crescendo lighting glow. You feel alive, resurgence just by watching this!! Until you go down there now, forever ruined by yuppies, hipsters, cucks, SJW's, femnazii's, transfreaks, over-crowdedness and yes that recent terrorism incident that has forever tarnished this very spot I used to love....Atleast we can always fallback on this video here....
Anyhow have a Winfield lol
Ok boomer
Boomer huh?!... Nah I ain't no Boomer but a Gen X/Xennial douceur. At least I'm no soy filled Millennial or weak willed Gen Z either Den. B. meh....
TWO recent terrorism incidents now.
Wow...now look at it !! Poor old Young & Jacksons is a lonely island, almost falling into the hole of Andrews megalomaniacal desire to build "Brutalist" monuments to his reign all over our city !!
Ooh F.O. with your propaganda BS.
