Giants of Bass - Rocco Prestia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лип 2017
- This video features ‘Is This Hip?’, the track that I've written to represent Tower of Power bassist Rocco Prestia in the revamped edition of my book 'Giants of Bass', which was released in March 2017 through www.basslinepublishing.com
This funk tune features many of Rocco’s trademark moves: sixteenth note-based fingerstyle grooves, unison lines and a muted tone, and . I recorded the bass part using a Precision bass equipt with the Bass Mute, which helps with creating a muted tone. The bass in the video is my 1971 Fender Jazz bass.

Awesome bass line. Always have loved it. Thanks for video.
Thanks Preston
exceptional playing - and a bass to die for!!
Thanks Peter! And yes, a very nice bass...!
you're killing it! Been super bummed about Rocco, this brought a smile ear to ear....thank you!
I don't say where... but inside is the sickest lick on earth.
Right on brother! Yes... it’s hip!
Awesome, sometimes I think Rocco gets forgotten for being such a great bass player, this has inspired me to go re visit some Tower music
This is fabulous!!!!!
The bass is on fire!
Killer!! Great playing and beautiful tone 👍
I love this rendition, so well played! What a superb bassline to a fine track, salute!
Hell yeah that's hip! Great job, man.
Rocco's left hand techniques are really unusual. The only fingers he seems to fret with, (except maybe when he's playing octaves), are his index and middle fingers. His ring and pinky fingers just mute the strings!
I remember watching a tape of his back in the day, and it was curious to hear that, without a band playing behind him, just how many dead notes or fret outs he seemed to play. Once the band was brought in, all those sounds - that some experts would say were bad - disappeared and what was left was a wonderful percussive and funky groove. It's a sonic illusion of the highest calibre!
Great playing Stuart!
Thanks. Yeah, Rocco's fretting hand technique is difficult to replicate if you've been using conventional technique for many years. That's why I used the Bass Mute on this track, as it gave a very good approximation of his tone.
That's the same muting technique I use on my wife.
Whatever works...
Rocco defied the classical approach of one finger per fret, and as you say he use the ring for muting and the pinky for muting and playing octaves. Stuart is "cheating" here, he uses three RH side fingers while Rocco only used his index and middle finger on his Right Hand.
Thanks for sharing! Nice groove 😎
Great as always! best bass books on the market in my humble opinion.
Very kind of you to say Trevor, thank you!
Kickin‘ asses man!
i digs it!!
great!
well done mr. clayton
nice playing
Well Played Sir.
Thank you!
Wow
I have been studying Rocco for years. He is perhaps my greatest influence along with Geddy Lee and early on Steve Harris. And Jeff Berlin, Jaco That whole left hand muting technique is unique to him. I play those lines without that and it does not sound much different. Plus on the octave lines its impossible. If you play the line with a bit of a right hand mute you can get that effect. And sometimes its so subtle you don't notice.
he breaks his own rules so many times that the whole muting thing is surely there but not totally consistent.
jaco and his sixteenth note grooves don't use this technique. They sound a little fuller I guess.
my point is you can play Rocco lines without the weird left hand fingering and it will still sound cool.
I'm loving the Giants of Bass book and having a ton of fun learning the songs. Are you planning to do a video of ALL the songs in the books?
Probably not all of them, but if I have time I'll try to do a few more!
THANK U!! WAY Funkier than JACO EVER WAS!!! YEA,I sed it!!! No cutsy Psuedo Bop,JUS' FONK!!
you are right sir
Very cool! Stuart, tell me, what height do you prefer for jazz bass? How many millimeters above the frets for the 1st and 4th strings? Thank you.
Evgen Chek I should be a butt and say COMFY AS HECK.
I've never seen anyone pluck with the ring finger like that. I also see you are alternating between that and the middle finger along with the index finger. Is that a resting technique to keep from getting fatigued? Great playing, thanks for sharing.
Hi Scott. When I was first learning to play, I was inspired by Billy Sheehan, and got the three finger technique from him. It's great for playing very fast, but can create problems for other types of line. This year I made an effort to switch to using just two, which I find is much more logical for the kinds of lines I typically play.
@@StuartClayton Thank you.
Can wait for, "giant of bass : stuart clayton"
Thumper 101,Hipness it is.
Stuart I guess you had advertised bassline publishing company on face book you got me with Bernard Edwards groove I don't know what song it was but you made me go to the site and purchase a beginners guide to reading music. But why no video Instructions is it to costly? You make bass playing more fun than anyone I've seen and make you want to dive right in.
I don't really have enough time to film video lessons unfortunately! Maybe I will someday!
My question was what is the name of the Bernard Edwards bassline you were playing damn I love that line.
It's a song called 'Chic Unique' that I wrote for my Giants of Bass book!
Time on the job you capture the technique of a lot of bassist that's phenomenal feat. I was confused which direction to go I just went back to playing after an 11 year hiatus could never read tried playing by ear. I look at some of scott's bass lessons like what I see but that damn glove is in the way so you almost have to rely on sound if you are not familiar with the notes. So I came to the conclusion I have to learn to read music if I'm to understand the Giants of the bass. Stuart Thank you so much for your time and keep doing what you are doing I love it.
Is that your jazz bass Mr. Stuart?
Mr.Pastorius yes it is
