Hitting a wider line definitely does give you wider servers but it makes your serves more predictable. I (4.0 level) tend to find more success personally when hitting the middle and serve receiver cannot tell if my serve is gonna be a reverse, cut, or jam. Goes back to your initial point that different serves work for different people
