@@heatherrockwell9012 that's just my hair, my head is actually quite normal-sized! This is all something I am somewhat proud of, myself too, so I am glad it's working for others. I know I always get annoyed when I read or watch some dense content, and have to pause, stop, and work through what was just said :D
I'm excited for this one! I am completely stoked about fabrials. Surgebinding gets the most attention and discussion in Stormlight, but I think fabrials are super underrated. In the books it's like "Wow, surgebinding is super cool and powerful and awedome! OMG, just look at those Windrunners, they're like rockstars! Oh, and here's fabrials. They're ok, I guess, but they're not as cool as Surgebinding." Fabrials are one of the most interesting ways that, what could be described as magitech, has been utilized in the Cosmere. There was a bit of investiture being combined with inanimate objects in Mistborn Era 2, and a tiny bit in Warbreaker with the lifeless being re-animated with investiture via breath. The thing that I am most interested in seeing as both Stormlight and The Cosmere advance is the combination of magic and technology. Fabrials are going to be one of the first and main ways that magics from different worlds are going to be transferred and combined, and I am really excited to see that process unfolding and how the different investitures are going to mix and work together, and I cannot wait to see what happens and what kind of crazy fabrials are made once they figure out how to move the investiture.
Brandon's going for electronics full speed, with fabrial logic gates, and Raysium being a diode. (In electrical circuits. a diode allows current to flow only in one direction. It's the equivalent of a check valve in plumbing.)
Ruby is the programming language of Roshar. I once tried using a jar instead of a gem to transfer Stormlight, something happened, it was an Unsupported Exception.
Most people don't take a break from homework by watching a 2-hour discussion about a science/engineering lecture, but hey! Y'all are the perfect break 😂
@@berylliosis5250 I just do 1X speed and do other stuff in the meantime. Like fact checking stuff I want to write/post somewhere, doing a logic puzzle, drawing.
my belief as to the Rosharan's lack on knowledge on metallurgy/blacksmiths dates back to the Desolations causing loss of expertise in combination with the ability to soulcast.
1:01:40 this part where y'all deconstruct how the fabrials work was very helpful, thank you! I glossed over a lot of the fabrial stuff in the books, but it is interesting when you start making connections in the cosmere.
Okay, I'm way late to replying to stuff, it seems. But yes! I am a music nerd. In fact, I almost got a music performance degree back in the Dark Ages when I was in college. :)
Pewter = Internal Physical Pushing metal Tin = Internal Physical Pulling metal Both physically push (augment) or pull (diminish) their internal spren's attribute Steel and iron have the same thing but external: they (probably) repel or attract the external objects Steel and iron as polarity - they might block effects to "only pushing" or "only pulling"? It also says "which metals", though - perhaps modifier-style stiron makes the fabrial "update" to new metals (push/pull)? As for logicspren computers - it'll be very interesting to see where that goes. Making a computer is very very very easy, but making a computer that's powerful enough to be useful is very hard (the main reason it took so long for us). Scaling up the number of logicspren will be tricky, but scaling up the speed will be very important and potentially trickier (depending on the actual advanced fabrial mechanics) (Also, quantum computers need lots of qubits to do worthwhile things - they can do cool stuff now, but nothing on a meaningful scale) This is a spoilers chat, so... it ain't no Raysium anymore. Taravangianium is the true name ;) But actually, thinking about it... with a turing complete fabrial system, you could totally make a computer using Taravangianium to conduct stormlight. That breaks the scalability issues I was thinking of - presumably it's possible to make stormlight transfer through Taravangianium fast enough that it works out.
Tin in a diminisher will generally diminish nearby pain (as a general localised effect), adding iron would explicitly draw in the pain. It is not required, but a more advanced version would be able to use iron to pull in the pain.
Could Logic Spren, in addition to lighting up, cause micro-vibrations? We know that the flawed archived gems vibrate to cause a specified pattern for a message when Infused. This means we know that gems can vibrate when Infused, so is there anything that shows that Infused gems don't always have micro vibrations, and that the timing for making a clock is based upon that regular pattern of vibration from the caged Logic Spren?
just wanted to point out in reference to the chapter 4 discussion with the different gemstones that the Lopen makes a comment about the Stormlight from different types of gems “tastes different.” not sure how that might be relevant but it is interesting
Don't tinminds enhance vision telescopically, when tapped? Like looking through binoculars? The resemblance between that and its artifabrian use is slim, but present.
So was the Thrill only able to be captured because chirichiri ate some of the stormlight from the gem? That is pretty cool. Chirichiri is the true hero of the battle at Thaylen Field.
That makes sense, but the perpendicularity part doesn't last long so depending on how the fabrial actually works it may not do too much. Like maybe the clock just stops while it's in the perpendicularity, which would only make it slow by a few seconds each time he did it
@@reklessbravo2129 oh my, I was only thinking about the overcharge aspect. The time dilation is also very interesting. I agree with what you say, but Dalanar might forget (definitely) to reset his clock, so I'd say little by little it would get worse.
when using a magic system, you need Intent, which is given by the user. when we talk about nature such as a metal existing in a planet and how it interacts with the world, Intent has to come from somewhere else. I think that Intent must come from the shard's power invested in that particular planet, which is why the same metal interact diferently not only in different planets but in different magic systems even in the same planet, like allomancy and feruchemy.
Aluminum blocks the screamers. Therefore, it would make sense not to transform material into aluminum, since that is how the Fused are able to find Radiants.
I think iron and steel in pain fabrials are changing TARGET. Painrial is used as bracelet, wear on hand. Can dimnish and augment pain on user (iron) or on user's target/away from user (steel).
Maybe you'll get more traffic of you speak to the algo-rhythms. And now that I have your attention, have you considered going shardcasts specifically about the themes and philosophies of the cosmere? I feel like there is a lot of content there that you've always sort of hinted at, but never delved into.
I don't know if we've talked about this at length, maybe a throwaway mention here and there. I don't know if many of us feel... knowledgeable enough to discuss something like that, but do *you* have in mind?
But they arent specific to Roshar, Southern Scadrian's have definitely been using an approximation of a fabrial to fly. At least I personally believe they're an adapted version of Navani's bridge four
I'm sure I'm way behind but I just realized the Perfect Pitch effect of the Hieghtenings is more than just for flavor (Nalthis magic being very artsy focused). You would be able to more easily divine each Pure Tone.
Totally random thought I'm sure the top theorizers have had before: How on Roshar can Hoid merge all the Shards back into Adonalsium (assuming that's his goal), when so many of them are Splintered or Invested throughout entire planets? Would they have to somehow "gather up" *all* the seons and skaze to "put back" e.g. Devotion and Dominion back together again? Finally, wouldn't it be a requirement e.g. for Honor's "essence" to be merged with the rest that all the spren of Honor effectively die and all magic systems associated wih Honor cease to exist?
Maybe because they're separate Cognitive entities now? In any case, I still don't see how it would even be possible to gather loose pieces of a Shard throughout a whole planet.
There's always this thing about the metallic arts that nags in my brain, and it kinda relives with the talk about fabrial cages. Pewter and bronze are both alloys containing copper and tin. How would the body even distinguish between that stuff? Solid solutions would disintegrate in gastric acid, right? I can see why the % matters so much (especially since pewter used to contain lead in the past). I've just always had this hitch with the Mistborn magic system. Why would it matter if you consume bronze instead of a mixture of 2 parts copper and 1 part tin? Back to this topic, in fabrials I can see why it would matter. We alloy metals to make sure they have certain properties a metal on its own doesn't have. It would make sense for that to have effects in all three realms of the Cosmere. And I like the idea of fabrial clocks being more like digital clocks as opposed to analogues ones. The spren dimming or brightening could very well reflect logic gates, but if the spren has more than 2 states, the gates would have more options for input and output. I wonder how much easier it has gotten for them to get logic spren now that Jasnah has her plate...
Bronze is mostly copper. Pewter is mostly tin. In the Metallic Arts, the exact proportions matter a lot. Both of them usually have other metals as well, here on Earth.
Why Navani didn't recognice the Aluminum weapon from the Fused? I mean, in Chapter 18 of Words of Radiance, we can see that exists guards used to blunt the cutting edge of a Shardblade. It's obviously aluminum. Can't they compare the two metals? xD
Oh, so I was Wrong, lol. For anyone interested, I find this WoB: Questioner: You know the sparring guards, for the Shardblade training, the guards they put on the Shardblades. Are they made of aluminum? Brandon Sanderson: So, they are not. Peter will not let me make them made out of aluminum. He's my continuity editor, he keeps me honest. I tried to get them to be aluminum, but there are reasons why they can't be. So we had to make them their own weird little thing, unfortunately. But you could make a sheath out of aluminum for a Shardblade that would work. He keeps me honest, so it's good, but I did try to fit them in that way.
I know there are already a load of WTCC questions in the 'queue', but would submitting one that's a dumb play on words/pun hurt my chances of it getting read from the random selection? ... (Like I know y'all just kinda scroll through & pick them, but would a jokey prompt be unwanted?)
