I used FFg powder when shooting mine - which has not happened since the late '70s; do believe 60 gr is the "sweet spot" for a black powder load in this rifle. Recently "dug it out" of the attic and gathered all the accessories - plan on shooting it again soon but need to increase the inventory of "minnys" first.

I have a zolli that I believe is early 70's. I bought it used in a pawn shop for $75 in the late 80's. The stock was cracked by the breach on the lock side and the inside of the barrel was toast, rusty and black. I repaired the stock and it's holding fine. The stock is amazingly beautiful with nice figuring and I thought it would make a shotgun if nothing else. I tried several mini balls and sabots, round balls and at 50 yrds could not hit a 12" target. I have been using it as a fowler. Two weeks ago I removed about 90% of the rifling, I posted a video on my channel. I took it out last weekend and using 70 grains of 777, 530 round ball and 2 .015 prelubed patches I'm holding a 2 1/2" group at 40 yrds, like you on one knee. I'm getting some .575 round balls and it should tighten the group even more. I am very excited. Are you in the Pacific Northwest?

My Zoli is very accurate. They will perform best with a .579 or .580 Minnie in their .582 barrel with 60gn 2F but you'll need to pay attention to fouling control.

We used them as civil war re-enacters in the mid 70's.

Excellent. I've always liked them, but never picked one up because they weren't permitted within my reenacting organization. May have to give them another look.

@finflask1862 what i really need is another 1841 Mississippi rifle, the Remington being an improved model of the 1841. We'll definitely need to get out for muzzleloaders this year.

I think the Zouaves are the best looking of the Civil War Era muskets.

Their looks contributed a lot to their popularity in the repro craze of the sixties and seventies. Also that they had a rifle length (33 inches) barrel as opposed to the musket length of forty inches, which made them easier to handle. They are basically a contract version of the 1855 Harpers Ferry rifle with brass fittings.
1855 saw the US adopt the .58 Minnie system with a rifled musket, a short rifle, and a pistol carbine with a detachable shoulder stock. Original service charge for the rifle and musket was 60 grains of FFg powder with a .577 bullet. The bullet was designed by Burton at the armory as a modified Minnie, having just the hollow base to expand into the rifling. With the original loading and sights they were very accurate.
During the war, the union acquired a large quantity of Enfield rifled muskets which were in .577 caliber. To accommodate both calibers they adopted a .575 bullet which would work in both Enfield and Springfields, with a slight increase in fouling and some loss of accuracy in the .58 Springfields.

They are approved for competition use with minie' balls with the North South Skirmish Assoc (N-SSA). There are a lot of them in use, original & reproductions. However, I think they are "tack drivers" with a PRB! Thanks! Love your channel!

Other than caliber isn’t a Harper’s Ferry pattern rifle a 1841 rifle. Aka The Mississippi Rifle?

The manufacturer, Zoli, is pronounced zoh lee, not zah lee. Doesn't matter though just FYI. You don't show the ramrod for this rifle. This was my first black powder rifle in 1971. Kept it for about 20 years before I sold it.

Thanks for the input. I didn’t show the ramrod because I don’t have one. I bought it used and it didn’t come with it

    I have a Zoli made 1971.
I never could get it to shoot minnie balls. It will only shoot round ball, as the twist is too slow.
And I noticed diminishing returns after 60 grains.

      @finflask1862  10 місяців тому +1

I’ve been bad, I never checked the twist rate on this. I went to a nice range and I was shooting 100 yards and it wasn’t great. I was probably in and around an 18 inch group. So I definitely need to do some more experimenting with loads and different projectiles. I was with an advanced bp shooter and he thinks I need to get larger minis. I was shooting .577

Mine will drive tacks now with PRB and 45 grains. Use your ramrod with a tight fitting patch, and count the rotations as it goes down the barrel. a minnie ball needs a really fast twist. Otherwise they'll just tumble out of the barrel.
oh, and after 6 or 8 shots back-to-back, forget about it. The barrel will heat up and start to noodle. Mine will shoot around corners after a dozen shots.😂@@finflask1862
