By trying to open the Nintendo DS of his son, Bas van Abel discovered how hard it is to find out how and by who a lot of our products are made. He tells the story about how this process inspired him to embark on a journey to create the first Fair phone.
As an active member of the international maker and digital fabrication community, Bas van Abel has developed a wide variety of projects based on open design principles. As Creative Director of Waag Society's Open Design Lab, he initiated projects such as the community fabrication laboratory Fablab Amsterdam and opened his own open-source restaurant: Instructables Restaurant.

It's a perfect phone, a friend of mine has it with no problems at all, It's got android and works without abnormal problems. Let's face it, the electronics market is idiotic and the products are basicly shitty (as the companies are competing with the wrong properties). All of them are full-blown capitalistic companies, this is a social entrepreneur.
The parts of this phone all all replaceable (so repairing will be cheap, and no risk that you have to buy a new phone when the screen breaks). The resources are carefully selected, investments won't end up in the wrong hands (like terrorists). It also has 2 sim slots, ideal for saving unnecessary bills for international traveling. :-)

Looks great, but too expensive for most people.
Before buying, read the Fairphone Community Forum for all the posts from disappointed owners struggling with a defective product.
People who are satisfied report this much less often than unsatisfied ones - I had no problems, neither with FP1, nor with FP2 - all very good, bought a new battery after 3 years, phone does everything I need. Thanks a million, FP!!
@@bridge-it7195 My FP2 was defective from day 1, and the list of defects grew until I finally gave up on it.
Judging by the FP customer forum, my experience of buying an FP for altruistic reasons, really trying hard to like it and forgive/put up with its faults, but ending up dissatisfied appears to be common one.
I missed important work calls when the speaker didn't work. I missed special photographs of my children when the camera didn't work. When I went out, I was always worried about if/when the short lasting and erratic battery would die that day.
@@andrewgray2787 sorry to hear from your experiences, but if my phone is broken from day one - that happened twice with an ACER Computer in my case - I would return it until I have a working device.

Using tedx as marketing, yuck, i can read that in his crummy neurolinguistic programming. I support the cause of fairphone but theyre kinda bad, bad phone but they still thrive off poor people, but not as problematic as the major phone brands.
Lol Nintendo lets you open up their devices, just use the right screwdriver. I disassembled my Wii.
Lol you can open more Smartphones than you think (easier than you think). Lumia 800, 4 minutes and it's almost completely disassembled. There are many disassembly tutorials for almost any phone on youtube, but didn't see any video of the fairphone.

Much more? Oh about how they still produce their phone in china with not much better wages. And of course, they found a conflict-free area for Cotlan. But it's still the same country... So yeah all they are doing is being a little more transparent than other manufacturers. In fact the processor they use is produced from a company that has one of the worst conditions for workers in china...
I am saying it again. Motorla tried to produce their Moto X in the USA, but failed because it was too expensive. At least they tried. Fairphone doesn't even bother. While that guy is talking and brainwashing you many chinese workers produce his fairphone at still not that much better circumstances than any other company. Why don't they just build the phones themselves instead of sitting on their fat asses? THAT would be a Fairphone
+iLo_ iLo If they don't support the free-conflict mines, they would probably be bought by other companies who don't care about the conditions of the workers. Fairphone cares about the conglians and chinese by giving them some work to do and have a little more decent live.
