Hey Heath, Its a real shame that the timeless heroes like Robin Hood, Zorro, Flash Gordon, Tarzan and so many others have been completely lost to the last couple of generations. How these characters have been replaced by Mario Bros. and the like I can't understand. One of the reasons Walt Disney's Robin Hood is so good is because it is LOADED with classic Western character actors doing the voices. Man, those guys were good! One word for Crowes Robin Hood is ANGST! Would like to see a Zorro themed Video from you in the future -Cheers Shawn

Speaking of Burroughs this reminded me of a movie I picked up (new on Blu-ray for $5.00CDN): Princess of Mars. It stars Antonio Sabato Jr., Traci Lords, and Matt Lasky. Here's the IMDB link if anyone is a Burrough's fan: www.imdb.com/title/tt1531911/ I mention this one instead of John Carter because JC got a lot more press.

Great video Heath! I recall peeing my pants during Costners Robin Hood when the witch slammed down her potion bowl, stared into the frame and exclaimed, "the painted man!" Ugh. Still shuddering.

Great video Heath. I reckoned this was coming with the new Robin Hood movie coming out. I have great memories of Prince of Thieves. The Old Man took me to see it when the new 4 screens theater just opened at the mall. So many great lines “The Hospitality here is as warm as the weather” “ I’ll carve his heart out with a spoon!” Probably not the greatest Robin hood in Costner but Rickman as the Sheriff and Freeman as Azeem were great. The part where Will Scarlett has gets an arrow through his hand, that was shocking to me at the time. I reenacted the final scene with my Lego Castle and Forestmen I don’t know how many times and my friend I did a whole choreographed bow-staff fight scene after renting it once too. I still have my re-curve bow and arrow set from that time. I can’t say I’ve watched it 45 times, but my folks still have it on VHS and I watch it about every other summer as the VCR is still hooked up at the old cottage.

Great story! Costner wasn't the best Robin Hood, but for the life of me, I can't think of a better choice at the time for who could bring butts to seats in the summer of 1991.

100% agree they couldn't have found a bigger name in the summer of '91 to play Robin hood, without it being a crazy 80s action star which would have been probably much worse. Could imagine Jame Cameron directing it with Arnold as Robin hood and Bill Patxon as will Scarlet? Though maybe Curt Russell and Keith David as Robin hood and Azeem respectively would have worked. Regardless Happy Thanksgiving.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was a huge movie to me as well.
I was about 8 when it came out and I actually got to see it in the theater as well. I also had seen the Disney cartoon previously but, like you said, Prince of Thieves was seeing Robin Hood in a much different way for a young kid. I remember renting it and watching it several times as well, although not even close to as many times as you probably did. It was a movie that first exposed me to things such as swordplay and medieval/fantasy style settings.

Glad you mentioned "Robin Hood in Space" which is actually the Canadian animated series "Rocket Robin Hood." I wasn't sure if you were familiar with it- unless American kids like me lived in a northern border city like I did (Detroit) and watched the CBC like I did out of Windsor, Ont. it probably wasn't something one was familiar with. I figured it would be something up your alley. I just noticed that Amazon (and also Ebay) has dvds of the series.

As a young kid, I watched the Disney animated Robin Hood about umpteen million times. Then when I got a bit a older, I watched the Errol Flynn movie umpteen million times. Unlike you, when I saw Prince of Thieves for the first time, it left a bad taste as it was much darker than the versions I was used to. I really need to revisit as an adult. I also need to look for that Mill Creek 5-pack you mentioned, as that sounds right up my alley. Not sure if it's on Blu ray. and I still have the soundtrack on vinyl from my childhood. Plus when I was at school my friends uncle played Little John in the show.
Disney Robin Hood is a great film. Watched that while on holiday in Nottingham as a kid! And yeah the Patrick Bergin Robin Hood was in cinema's here in the UK. As i saw it. Look forward to picking up Twilight Time’s Blu-ray release of Hammer’s “Sword of Sherwood Forrest.” And you’re right, Disney doesn’t do much merch on their animated feature (my first intro to the character), though “Famosa” did an *extensive* line of amazing figures and playsets back in the 1990’s for the UK market.

As a Flash Gordon fan, can your recommend a way to watch the old serials? I'm really interested in the original three serials from the 30s and 40s (Flash Gordon, Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars, and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe). In America, it seems they're all out of print, though "Conquers the Universe" is available from a ton of public domain collections in poor quality. I was wondering if you'd recommend any UK releases, as I'm region free.

    • @toddkillinger8538
      @toddkillinger8538 5 років тому

@@CerealAtMidnight Hey, Heath. Wow, had no idea Ming had prevailed and that Flash had been vanquished from the States. I have the original snappers from Image (which are rather pricey now, though, per reviews on Amazon, the Madacy reissues have serious authoring problems). The Film Detective put out a two disc set of “Conquers” which is purportedly from a restored 35mm archive print and looks pretty good judging by their UA-cam trailer. I would definitely bypass the current, edited-down “feature” versions by Lionsgate and go for the real deal.
Afraid I’m not familiar with any of the UK releases (I’m region-free as well -such riches!) The £20 Delta Leisure releases are spread over 3 discs, so one would *hope* for decent quality. (And if not, they’re region-free, so you could always re-sell if you don’t find them up to snuff).
If it were me, I’d have to go with tracking down the Image/The Film Detective releases.
Truly wish Universal would show these series some love -a restoration/re-release like Kino’s (superb) “Adventures of Captain Marvel” blu-ray would be most welcome and is long overdue.
Also wonderful (and also out-of-print) is the excellent 1979 Filmation series. Lou Scheimer was a *massive* fan of the original and it really shows as they lavished a lot of TLC on their production (though the reworked second season was a bit lacking). Check it out streaming on Amazon before considering investing in the Mill Creek release. Even the UK release looks to be unavailable on the primary market. (So much for “Gordon’s alive!?”)
Don’ have much to say on the SyFy’s ill-conceived reboot or the syndicated “Flash as skateboarding hipster” 90’s animated series. The German-produced TV series from the 50’s is one I need to track down as Steve Holland cuts quite a heroic comic book figure as the show’s titular lead. And, of course, I love the 1980 film so hard I really ought to give it a ring and make it official. 😄

Fantastic! Those Image Entertainment discs are kind of expensive, but maybe I can catch them at a good price, now that I know which versions to look for. I wasn't aware of the Film Detective version, but I see it now. I hate that I missed out on so much of this stuff when it was in print. Like you, I think that these serials need to be restored and shown some love in high definition. Hopefully someone (like Kino) will come along and do them justice soon. Thanks for the tips!

The main reason that there's no representation of Disney's Robin Hood in the parks is because it comes from the "Dark Age" of Disney Animation, which was between Jungle Book (last film Walt worked on) thru Little Mermaid (first film of the Renaissance). Most films from that time frame weren't hugely successful so they kind get pushed by the wasteside.

Heath I think what you're feeling around the Russell Crowe version of Robin Hood is the same thing I feel about the 2011 Conan. The problem with these remakes is that while the special effects are sometimes pretty spectacular they lack one really important quality: Humour! The Arnold Schwarzeneger version of the Conan movies have moments where you burst out laughing for some stupid little thing that's said or done. On another topic: a few months back I found 3 episodes of the second season of the BBC version of Robin Hood (at a thrift store) and I found myself really liking it (but you may not given your love for the other Robin Hood movies and shows). If I see the other BBC seasons of Robin Hood I'm definitely picking them up.

The greatest version of Robin Hood ever committed to the small screen or big screen is unquestionably Robin of Sherwood from Showtime back in the 80’s! Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves borrowed heavily from this series especially in the creation of Morgan Freeman’s character! Michael Praed is just the best there is! The same way some consider Sean Connery the best James Bond and Christopher Reeve the best Superman, Michael Praed is in the same category to me as the best Robin Hood ever!!!! There's absolute no representation of the black cauldron so I wonder if they are just trying to forget about the dark era of disney animation witch was between 1970 - 1988 well besides the pooh movie that came out in the early 70s

The Disney Robbin hood was not a big money maker the film only made 32 million back in 1971 unadjusted theatrically it may have been to dark our there were maybe some other iissues with it.
