Propshaft universal joint replacement & centre bearing replacement - PROJECT L200
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 жов 2020
- Our 2003 Mitsubishi L200 pickup needs some love and attention, with bags of enthusiasm, but little talent, let’s see if these are home mechanic jobs or are we as incompetent as we think we are :)
It is taken off road, but the shocks, leaf springs and other bits are looking tired and as we love “Murdock” Mitsubishi, we want to do it ourselves, plus, we will literally save over a thousand euros in garage costs.
Let us show you how easy or hard these tasks are to perform, warts and all! - if we can do it, you can too, you can, we even make the easy ones tough!!
It’s new shocks and leaf spring time, so new Terrafirma shocks will be fitted, Milner Leaf Springs to complete that overhaul - the old dampers were "shocking" or totally knackered is a more correct term!
The centre prop shaft bearing as given up, so the prop shaft is coming off, so all the joints will be removed and replaced as we have gone in that far anyway - not all goes quite to plan, the signs of problems were there, we clearly ignored them and suffer the consequences.
Some tasty orange polyurethane bushings will give the sway bar a new lease of life and whilst we are at it, the brakes look awful, so full calliper rebuild will happen after a sandblast and powder coat.
The bushing are so simple to replace, only two idiots could struggle - you know what happens !
Quite a few of the removed parts do not cut the mustard, so they get the choice of sandblast and powder coat - Hammerite or Raptor - so see all three processes in action.
We discover other issues and maybe more as we dive in to this project.
Once the outside is done, some vinyl wrap on the dash, new stereo and a dam good detail with transform the old interior.
Road testing before and after will show if the new shocks really perform and if these new parts were worth bothering to do.
Finally after a little off roading to test - a paint detail to clear some (doubt all) of the many scratches from dragging Murdock through trees and bushes.
Subscribe, as we want you to join this journey, advice gratefully received and criticism digested over coffee.
Remember, we are not mechanics, nor do we pretend to be - so most of this is a first try for us, so you will see genuinely how tough or easy these jobs really are.
You must love the tunes - so make sure to check out “Death Of Guitar Pop” for some awesome music!

I loved the video, watching all the way from Zimbabwe kkkk I actually have a truck which needs a propshaft center bearing replacement. Thank you very much guys
That’s great to hear! Good luck and thanks for the comment! 👍
Watched this, and confirmed my choice to send it to garage!
What a sensible man - that was a tough few days, but we are idiots 😂
@@DrivenMadShow yes, but idiots with a lift and the required tools!😁
@@jaspersilus that is true😇- we are lucky boys ! the lift is a surprisingly cheap bit of kit - its having somewhere to put it that's the problem - we get a lot of passers by asking us to work on their cars (which we don't, that would interrupt our coffee and stroking the cat), as we do look the part, but knowledge is a wonderful thing, cannot just buy that ( or I would be fluent in Portuguese, as I am eternally embarrassed about 😭 not grasping well) thanks for suffering watching us :) KR J&N
Good vid .. well done boys👌
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for telling us
Sure there was more to show - looking forward to the test drive
Muy buena demostración , thanks,
Muy amable - contento de haber ayudado 😊
Nice effort guys & I love a challenge with DIY stuff but I think I'll taking it to the shop for that one when it needs doing.
We are useless - so if we can ..... as the saying goes :)
Thank you for taking the time to upload these for us. :)
Its lockdown here, so we found a way of entertaining ourselves - glad you enjoyed it.
@@DrivenMadShow Good to see positivity despite the lockdown! Instead of connecting with people around us, we connect more via internet with strangers around the world. I tried to find books on automotive (esp on heavy machinery) but its so tough to find such books.
@@akoj3262 I get various auto magazines, still prefer paper !! - Perhaps search out, heavy machine industry magazines - there are lots of odd publications for industry, just not mainstream so hard to find, but there will be some JCB type stuff I am sure.
Good work. You’ve made the mistakes so I don’t have to. I have a 2011 L200 and I should be able to this job by myself when the time comes. Another great video. Thanks to both of you. Merry Xmas and a happy 2022 to you and your family.
And we will continue to make them 🤣
Chuffed it helped, even if only in a small way.
Wishing you and your loved ones a great Christmas and a Happy New Year !
Gostei do vídeo aprendi bastante
Muito gentil - agradeço o tempo para comentar - faremos mais coisas L200 muito em breve
Yer making this keek easy gentlemen
When putting the new bearing on place the new one in position then using the old one cut out of the housing . Place over the new bearing put on the washer and nut and just tighten up sliding new bearing down nice and square .
Great tip - nice one :)
I type "how to replace center bearing" and I see thousands of video :) maybe your search thing is not working lol
That is then this is now - but glad you found loads and took the time to tell us - cheers
Nice video! What was the issue with the car? Actually my car is kinda jumping, I feel it on my seat. Can be connected to this
To be fair, ours drove very well (considering how bad the dampers and bushing's were) - we had a clunking sound, on bumpy roads when turning - the center prop bearing was very worn, we guessed the propshaft was hitting it. Shoving a gopro under, it looked like that was the case, once changed the clunk has gone, but we did leafs, dampers and other things at the same time (as you may have seen in the others) so we still think it was that. When you say jumping, ours bounces about at the rear, but thats due to pickups in general driving better with weight in - an ex work pal of mine had an L200 in the UK and just kept a 500kg metal sheet in the back for that reason alone - could try it with weight and see if it improves or removes your issue ?
Hi, I had the bearing changed like you. Now when I get to 60km / h the whole pick up vibrates.
Where can the mistake be?
Thanks
The centre bearing itself is an easy job and should not cause this issue - the spider joint/bearing however was a task as you saw for us - this needs to be aligned according to the style used - the facebook group facebook.com/groups/mitsubishil200ownersclub ... has a couple of professionals on there (which we are clearly not) so I suggest you post this on there - so my very rough and DIY suggestion is the wrong/not aligned or badly fitted spider joint, could be an issue - it would be hard to fit the bearing incorrectly with the assumption its the right one ?
Hi did you mark the prop shaft before removed ,if not this could be the issue.
Sir there is no cross joint fittings at my trailblazer 2014 I think this is not a universal cross joint, but how can I put grease on this.
No experience on a Trailblazer sorry - depends on the age, older vehicles like our L200 have grease nipples everywhere that needs it (need a diagram to find them all) and you need a pump or air grease gun - newer cars use sealed joints that need no lubrication - look for a Facebook vehicle specific forum/group you will get loads of decent help. There are quite a few, this one looks good facebook.com/groups/645974312234883
👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you !! too kind
Nice try I would just like to point out when you're pressing the cups back in you press them just a little each side . You don't press one side in and then the other just small even increments
Thanks for the tip - we need all the help we can get :)
Its Good to Use 1 long Shaft..
If only I had one 😂
The innuendo was a tad weird but the rest of it was very good, thanks..
Well - we have a very loved subscriber, who goads us into innuendo - both of us are easily lead ... sorry !!
Hi!
Where did you get the new fork from, and do you have a partnumber?
- Cheers!
www.euro4x4parts.com/parts/tmc1005_propshaft_slip_yoke_MR276839.html for parts, who have been excellent - the one we used is that link (PtNo TMC1005) ours is a 2003 2.5d - Portuguese vehicle.
@@DrivenMadShow Allright! Thanks! Mine is a 2005, basically the same truck! You dont happen to know the partsnumber of the other fork, the one holding the propeller bearing in place? Tube yoke I believe its called.
Not 100% sure of the bit you are after - have a look at this www.euro4x4parts.com/parts/tat1716-1022_propshaft_complete_line_MR389334.html ..... its a diagram of the whole lot, then hope you can pin point from here - buzz them an email, they know masses more than us (not hard you must be thinking :) , very helpful blokes. nbouwman@euro4x4parts.com
I would have greased both end caps inside and out then then tap them together, preventing binding.
Good call
offset the pitch with a couple washers and the press will run straight
Nice one - need theses tips - thank you
So you forgot to mark the position of the prop to the rear axle.!!!
Cannot remember what we did on that episode to be honest - pro's we are not 😇 but ours has a match line, possibly by the previous owner ? looked factory though ? we had to mark ours (from it) once we butchered it as I recall 😎
Thats why if i can i smack the bearings and dont press if i can help it
Our press has cobwebs on it now :)
Would have been a good idea to state what size socket was needed to get the centre bearing of as its a 30mm which most socket sets dont contain , therefore leaving you in the lurch unless youve done your homework and obtained one prior to dismantling the UJ.
We do our best, hindsight and all that - we have enough trouble remembering our names!
@@DrivenMadShow Fair enough but it is one of those things which needed to be stated, otherwise its a nice informative account with torque settings included.
@@stevenpreece9373 in the description we say .. Remember, we are not mechanics, nor do we pretend to be - so most of this is a first try for us, so you will see genuinely how tough or easy these jobs really are.
So it can be a struggle to remember everything we should, so totally agree with you - think we are improving :) appreciate the comment and advice - cheers
That's me now. Triton in driveway unmovable until I get a 30mm
Always mark the individual parts to assemble the correct way or YOU will upset the balance and that will be a specialist job.....
Good call - thought we did (while ago now) or must have got lucky :) running sweet for 40K since so all good - just about to start another batch of stuff we have no clue about - but fitting new skid plates & a bit of welding should be OK 🤞🏼
Is this on the k74 L200?
It is, ours is a 2003 - Portuguese LHD

Do not put a prop shaft in a vice 🤔☝️
Well, we are inept, trying for the first time, and we make that clear - but searching because you commented, almost every link (from diy'ists like us - to GKN etc) show using a vice ? but always looking to learn, what should we have done ?
