Security Risk Assessments: H&S considerations

- If you're new to security risk assessments this may help.
When away on an ISO28007 and ISO28000 (Maritime security) I always get thinking of the overlapping nature of the security risk assessment & H&S risk assessment.
Whilst maritime security risk assessments aid the protection of assets & the protection of human life, when viewing tasks through a security lens, it is easy to forget the H&S requirement to protect the safety of the 'protector'.
COMPETENCE
With this in mind, it is worth reminding ourselves that those who direct or manage security operations, and those who write security risk assessments, should be competent in H&S, so that the final assessment determines suitable controls, and satisfies H&S law (country dependent and if separate H&S assessments do not exist).
WHY?
If there is an injury during operations, (country dependent) companies may find themselves having to provide their risk assessment to the enforcing authority (HSE), a personal injury lawyer or insurance company. In extreme cases, it may even been the police.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
All roads lead back to the risk assessment
Leadership, management and authentic governance
A MIRROR TO OURSELVES
1 - What is the H&S competence of those who write your security risk assessments?
2 - Would your assessment stand up to 3rd party scrutiny?
3 - Read Point 1 again. One day you may wish you evaluated it earlier.

Please discuss NEBOSH IGC RISK ASSESSMENT
Great video Andy. The legal, moral, operational trifecta in organisational risk assessment is a difficult balance to achieve. Why do we do risk assessments? Not because we have to or the standard says so but that we want our people to be operationally effective and safe in achieving objectives (personal and organisational).
Absolutely ... Amen - hope all is well at Elite Risk Services
The last time I was in Dubai, there was a few risks in 'Cyclones'..
