- Encaustic artist, Jamie Lee Hoffer, discusses and demonstrates making encaustic paintings and outlines the history of encaustic art.
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface - usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used - some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment.
Hoffers's demonstration was part of an encaustic painting exhibit, LAXWAXART, a chapter of the International Encaustic Artist Association, at the WAV (Working Artists Ventura) Theater Gallery, in Ventura, CA and included encaustic artists Melissa Lackman, Robin Tripaldi and Deborah Lambert.

Best vid so far. Covered canvas, board, gesso, minimum/max heat gun effects, pigments, SCRAPING TECHNIQUE and framing/displaying. I also thought about using crayon in a pinch. Other vids mention grease marker and dried oil paint.
very informative about encaustic art!
Wonderful class by a true professional.
Great Video

When making your own paint with oil paints, what's the ratio? Also what about using crushed pastels or crushed water color pigment cakes?
are melted crayon art considered encaustic art?
Please can you zoom the camera over the work. Just can't see any of your work.
