In the pilot episode (the beginning of his journey), Ted says to Beard that they aren't in Kansas anymore, a direct quote from The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz pinball machine has been right there the pub the whole time.
The whole show has been pointing toward Ted returning to Kansas from the first episode. It's why he's from Kansas in the first place. His name, "Theodore," is the syllabic reverse of "Dorothy." He travels to a strange and wonderful place, meets some great people and some terrible people, gets all of his new friends the things they *need* rather than the things they want, etc. "Dottie" (Ted's mom) is also nickname for Dorothy. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" plays over the closing scene of You've Got Mail, the movie they were watching in this episode. The song over the closing credits to this episode of Ted Lasso is "Home," the finale from the musical The Wiz.
Sudeikis has said often, since the show began, that the story he wanted to tell would take three seasons. It's been planned from the beginning.

The Beard scene explaining his and Ted's backstory gets me every time. Three seasons of wondering why this strange, quiet, reader who (apparently) has a fairly wild life outside the office is attached to and quite clearly protective of a man like Ted gets answered in the hallway w/ Nate. From the beginning we see Beard as a fairly complete human being. There's not a whole lot of "character development" for him over 3 seasons. It's not until this moment that we see where he came from and can appreciate how far he's come to be a coach in the Premiere League. I love it. One of the best episodes of the series.

It also explains why he was so angry at Nate. Nate reminded him of himself and how he failed Ted.

This episode felt like the show runners knew Van Damme was kind of a punching bag and wanted to show that he's actually a talented goalie. Before this episode, aside from some sportscaster commentary during season 1's finale, every time Van Damme was on screen he failed to stop a goal. It's understandable that he's a good goalie, but before this episode, we were only shown his failures. This episode showed us why he was a great goalie in the premier league.

"He got fired" is so indicative of just how much of this show flies right by them as reactors. Literally missed of moments that aren't even subtle every single episode. I really don't like being negative but I haven't seen a group of people simply miss SO MUCH of the soul of a show... consistently

I honestly feel it’s because of having so many people watching together. You lose something for the intimacy of watching a show when you have more than 2-3 people watching because people are social beings, so we talk. The problem is they talked over A LOT of important parts and missed so much of the nuance and heart of the show because of it.

@Navi - the whole "they fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do" thing is from a poem called 'This be the verse' by the great Philip Larkin. It's amazing, as is pretty much everything Larkin ever knocked out, so it would be well worth your time looking him up.

    1. Jamie's mum calling him a "sexy little baby" is another callback to season 1, when Jamie said he was a sexy little baby. It was on point for the episode (how you pick up your parents faults) but it was still a weird interaction.
    2. Jamie's mother is basically a (slightly) older version of Keeley. So there's that. I'm not sure how old the characters are meant to be, but the actresses playing Jamie's mother is only 10 years older (43) than the actress playing Keeley (33).

Fun Fact about professional Sports: A lot of pro athletes in long running sports (especially contact sports), mostly function during games on painkillers. Hell, a lot of NFL athletes are basically stabbed with cocktails of painkillers before games to help them deal with the micro fractures they accumulate. For European footballers, it was a bit of a problem in the past with the amount of painkillers they received. Recently, while players are still given painkillers when injured on the field (and still viable to play), they aren't given things like Oxy or Vicodin anymore.

31:30 or so - yeah, American Football is definitely more violent, but they have more protective gear (I played from the age of 6 until I was 15, all of it in full pads & helmets). The impression I get from people who don't know the game is that they think that soccer's like volleyball, or something else where most injuries seem to be self-inflicted. Soccer's more like the NBA, there's a whole lot of bumping and banging out there. I discovered that the 'hard way' when I started playing the game myself (I'm American, but love soccer) as an adult. I still have a scar on the back of one of my legs where some Colombian dude slid into me with feet high and studs (cleats) up 35yrs ago. And that was just a pick-up game in the park!

Some people don’t watch certain sports. Why in the fuck would Americans know who Guardiola is when he only ever played in Europe and we don’t get European soccer matches here…or at least we didn’t until the last 5-10 years! Even then it depends on the market as to where they will air, so people are limited to seeing them.

You don't sub Jamie out because once you do, he is not allowed back in the game.

It's funny, people talk about the team forgiving Nate too quickly, but the team OBJECTIVELY treated Nate worse than he ever treated them. They stopped bullying Nate in like season 1 episode 2, so it's never at the top of the audience's mind, but he was treated like shit by this team for years and essentially the only thing he did that was actually wrong was leak the panic attacks to Trent.

It baffles me how Jamies fucking dad has more character development in this season than keeley

@user-os2gm6hv9l wait you take these simple life lessons that could have happened to everyone as a reason to justify her character development 😂😂? She ended up where she was in the beginning of the show..

@@testertesteb4915 do you seriously see Jamie's father's 'development' as not simple? fix your addiction and do not hurt your kid. That's simpler than KeeIey realizing that her dream she described to Nate in s2e11 is
not as simple as it seems and she needs to learn more than just supercifically
      copying Rebeca.

@@celinelia8127 nope but apperently its a bigger drive for character change than what ever keeley got lmao. Tell me one diffrent trade that keeley has now compared to season 1. If you genuently believe her getting a reality check how businesses work is "character development" then im sry but i cant help you. Read something like "storytelling for dummies" idk

@@testertesteb4915 Being PR in season 1 was a step up but no struggle, no lessons, it was too easy. She didnt have much struggle at her work entire season 1 and 2. She learned Jamie was not good for her, but work-wise she had it easy. Keely's biggest strength was shown finally to also be her biggest weakness: emotions. In
season 3 she finally had struggles. Like Ted, she learned that positivity and being friends with everyone is sometimes not enough and can backfire. like Ted,Roy,Rebecca and Jamie,
Keeley also experienced relapse to her season1 self in season 3 in a way.

You've Got Mail is a good movie but seeing a whole room of grown men crying over it actually threw me out of the show. 😂 Come on it's not THAT good. I loved meeting Jamie's mom and his interaction with her (is it me or did she look like his peer or even younger rather than his mom...like I couldn't believe she could give birth to him unless she had him when she's 10 😅) but I really wished that his conflict with his dad went in a different way instead of the usual trope of forgiveness cuz he was his sperm donor. Not saying it's not realistic, but dramatically speaking just didn't feel satisfying to me.

I love this show and for the most part the way they show the soccer is just fine, but I gotta say playing one man down and then sending your very obviously hurt star player back in on a game you are already winning is just a series of terrible calls.

I was all in my feels about Season 3 first on first watch, was disappointed with it overall. Think because from jump they broke up Roy and Keely and I will ship them til the day I die, I’m glad Jamie changed but I still don’t see it for him. But on second watch it really is so well done and a very nice wrap up although I wouldn’t mind more

I actually think Roy and Keeley splitting was a consequence of Juno Temple not being available for the whole shoot.
