Great review! Loved that you cover things that are often overlooked, such as workflow and handling noise. Especially workflow is inportant! Next time it would ve helpful to also review the app (I know I know your video is superlong already). I would be interested in the differences in editing and smart editing functionalities. Love your work!
That shot of you falling into the pool was cool! I am always trying to find ways to make holding the stick look natural, you pulled it off with that shot.
So I do have the GoPro Hero 8, but want a 360° cam, as choosing angles in post is exactly what I need to ensure I film an experience, not make filming the experience.
So I need a durable, 360° camera with good sound and perfect stitching. Low light performance would be nice, too. What should I get?
Edit: Could you do a GoPro Max vs Insta360 One R side-by-side video? Maybe with some low light for us to see how bad it is?

Very educational video, u answered all my questions about the Insta360 ONE R Twin camera and options. Especially enjoyed The side-by-side comparison to the GoPro. Also you were able to answer a lot of questions I had not thought of as yet. Your storytelling, moving around action, and match up comparisons were much more entertaining than the Talking Heads we normally get to see. Keep up the great work!😇

13:09 that mic moving really shows how much stabilization is going on in the insta360 cam.
12:21 the mic has built in shock absorbers so it also moves a bit on its own.

Hi Gene. Great review. Thanks :) Welcome to the wonderful world of *"Passive" versus "Active" audio adapters.* The little black USB-C adapter for the Insta 360 is most likely (Due to its size) a "passive" Mic adapted input, whereas there's no processing or signal eq circuitry, thus lower recorded volume and flater, unprocessed sounding audio. On the other hand, the GoPro Mic adapter is much larger, probably an "active" Mic adapter, thus it's getting some power from the GoPro USB-C side input and is processing and eq'ing and amplifying the signal coming in from the external Mic. Also, the GoPro is probably processing the audio in camera as well, using extra analogue to digital converter quality chip and firmware algorithm to post process the audio a little before digitizing it into a .wav or whatever audio format it's recording the audio portion of the video file in. This would be my best guess as to why there's such a difference between the two camera external Mic input solutions.
I bet Gene is being BRIBED so he won't talk about the TURD audio quality even if it has external mic.
The Insta360 is a substandard cam that is not capable of recording audio.

@@markjob6354 For the internal mic, I have to increase the volume level (in post) by 48db to reach normal levels which is insane...
Even then, the sound is still muddy.. like you're under water. And you can hear audio clippings everywhere(due to over compression)..
I ordered a mic adapter and see how a mic would do. But from what I saw from others, the mic levels are weaker.. but let's see..
Also another is the Horizontal lock. It's only available when you have the 360 module (even in post).. If you only attach the 4k Lens module you won't have it. GoPro and DJI have those even on their none 360 cameras and it's process in camera and not in post (in your computer).. These reviewers are over hyping this product. Even my cheap SJ8(which is not pretending to be a flagship brand) have better audio..
I should have gotten the GoPro or DJI. I think those companies really did their homework with regards to audio.

Really Appreciate your videos man. Although the video is pretty long I patiently watched the full video and really I didn't skip at all. You have given every possible thing you can do with the camera. I don't want to buy it but still, I watched the video because I got a notification saying "Potato Jet uploaded a new Video".
The mic adapter alone makes this action cam a real contender for motovlogging. Honestly, I kinda wish I'd known about it before I got my gopro.

PS - that "motion blur" in low light can be drastically improved by turning off stabilization in low light conditions... and now that I see that typed out... basically just dont move the camera at night 🤣
Tokyo Lens Actually there is a specific mode "lowlight/indoor stabilization" to remove motion blur for night stabilization. I'm the creator of this camera.

1/3 is less than 1/2
True, but your editing time is 1/3 that means less time and equate to faster. so you want less instead of more. 1/3, 1/2 = 2/6, 3/6. You need to treat the whole which is the bottom number, the denominator, equally. Lets say you a normal person editing a video file in one hour. You editing half of that which is 30 minutes, and he did in 1/3 of one hour is 20 minutes. Ehh. I supposed you forgot all of these fraction in school already...LOL. Most don't use it in daily life and I forgot some of it too.

21:18 The 1" module focus seems to be fixed too far for vlogging. 120D light crisp in back but not logo on shirt. I was impressed by the GoPro footage more throughout the review, honestly.

True for all cameras -- which are made to record video. Audio is a second thought.
I wonder how weird/awkward it would be to actually slate audio to images from such cameras. (especially with a lav to a field recorder).
@@9VARZ Not weird or awkward. In fact, the original and still practiced and common for the very best audio. Particularly with A/V sync software available such as Pluraleyes. Dialogue not so much.
It's as much the analogue to digital conversion too.

stanglova86 Its had a few updates and i’ve found it super slick tomuse. Turns on instantly, stabilisation is as good if not better than Hero, low light stabilisation is a lot better, 24fps in all modes inc HDR 4k. Front screen don’t forget, removable lens/filter and the audio attachment is very slim vs the Hero brick. I am testing audio at the mo. Ilove GoPro and agree with Gene that at Gen8 its super solid but honestly given this was DJI’s first version it is incredibly capable. Apps great too.

Thanks for the review! I’ve been holding off on buying the GoPro hero 8 for months with high hopes for the 1” censor on the insta360. The quality of the 1” censor is great, especially in low light, but the image stabilization just doesn’t cut it compared to the Hero 8 black. It’s a shame, because a 1” censor on an action camera is a game changer, but the image stabilization is what matters most. I’ll wait a few more weeks to see if the software updates improve. Otherwise it looks like GoPro is still king.

I use the GoPro Hero6 in my helmet and 360 Insta OneX in the guide of the motorcycle.
I wanted to replace the Hero6 but I do not know what the best option: the Hero8, Insta OneR 4k module or 1” module 🤔 . . . what will be the best option?

The official line I have from GoPro is that the non replaceable lens was to make things more compact and streamlined, but they increased the strength of the glass to compensate. You can use a lens protector on it.

I ordered the Insta 360 one R 4k Twin Edition and had to cancel it because it is not going to ship in time before I leave for my ski trip. However, I'm going to order it again when I get back. I have had a One R since February 2020. Am satisfied with the camera itself but I have encountered 3 major issues which would now make me recommend GoPro hands down:
- customer service is non-existent: I have been battling since March 2020 to get a refund over two parcels of accessories (altogether worth EUR 250) which never arrived. Though I have provided proof that no shipment was delivered to me, a first request was declined and my attempt to appeal was left unanswered.
- Insta360 managed to price accessories higher than GoPro! I had to mention it because it is quite an achievement. Example: One R dive case is priced at EUR 79, while Gopro's costs EUR 49. That is 50% more, for a plastic case with rubber joints!
- stitching mark is still rather apparent event in good light condition
