    It's about time someone made an air plant video about how to know when an air plant needs water. It's not always just a soaking once a week for everyone because water requirements vary depending on the environment.

      Completely agree. Watering requirements vary with environment, plant, and even how you want your plant to look as it grows. Thanks for the comment!

      Nisaa Khan Do you really? To me, that sounds so incredible to see! I live in northern New England and, until recently, air plants were sold as a souvenir decoration, usually glued to shells with magnets to put on the fridge! You never saw them at the greenhouses. It's like they weren't "real"plants! Now, the local greenhouses carry several types, with names attached so you even know what one you're buying. So to me, they are so exotic and rare, and lucky you have them growing naturally in the wild! That is so cool!

    I received four air plants per post as a birthday gift and they look extremely dehydrated (and thanks to your video I now know they are), about half of the leaves are brown and dead... Will soak them in water now and try to save them! The company that sold them (which is a flower company) clearly has no idea how to care for them, which was also evidenced by them advising to "lightly mist once every two weeks" and sending them with a stand made of copper (which according to internet will kill your plant). Hopefully I will be able to save them!

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  5 років тому

      Oh no! I hope they do better soon! Those brown leaves on the outside that are already dried can be carefully pulled off. The center of the plant is more important and is where new leaves will grow from.
      Hopefully your care can help them recover! Good luck!

    Wonderful video - only one I have seen that actually shows you how to tell. It did take me few minutes to realize you meant the edges of each leaf curling up rather than the shape of the whole leaf. But I am a newbie so now I have guilt feelings that I killed my friends air plant because I would mist it probably too much. Mine is still alive and looking fine, I think. Thank you again.

    Thank you so much! I do hope you’ll make more of these videos! Specifically I’d love to see the bulbous air plants included in this water how to. A video on how to know if they’re getting enough light (too much was kinda covered in “How do I know if I killed my air plant” vid.), a video on proper watering techniques would be another since google seems to find as many “soak for xx mins” articles as “never soak, mist lightly” ones. Very confusing to a beginner such as myself. Lastly, (a big undertaking I’m sure but you seem to have the knowledge for it) a vid of different species. I’m learning they do not all have the same water, light, fertilizer, etc needs but rather, much like anything else each species has it’s own specific requirements. But again, thank you ever so much for sharing your knowledge!

      I accidentally killed my first airplants too. My mistake was not understanding how much air flow they needed. I put them in my bathroom thinking they would love the humidity, and instead the lack of air movement caused them to rot. It is a learning curve for sure!

    thanks for this! what about too much water? what does that look like?

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  7 років тому +2

      The only risk for too much water is if your plants do not dry. Then there is a risk that they can rot in their base. When this happens you will notice that the inner leaves fall out or turn black. Once your base is black and rotten, the plant cannot recover. Just be sure to let your plants dry between watering and don't let water sit inside the base for too long. Hope this helps!

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  7 років тому +1

      I posted a video which has examples of plants that did not dry after watering and their bases rotted: ua-cam.com/video/VL0m1SX3wdA/v-deo.html But so long as your plants dry completely within an hour of so after watering, they should be fine.

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  3 роки тому

      Yes, soaking is a great way to water air plants so long as they dry out in between soakings. For many air plants, so long as their trichomes get wet (the fuzziness on the leaves), that is all the moisture they need!

      That's amazing! With proper care, they can live a VERY long time, obviously! Often it's thanks to the parent plant producing pups. In some species, the parent plant will die, but the living pups will continue attached and thriving. How wonderful that you still have your air plant growing!

    Very helpful video! What would you recommend for a Xerographica that lives indoors? I keep reading mixed advice that says Xerographicas DON'T need a soaking at all, a spray is just fine. Others say that it needs a soak just like other air plants. I'm so new to air plant and plant care in general, I'd hate to kill it.

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  7 років тому +6

      The most common natural environment for a Xerographica is actually the desert, and in fact some Xerographica survive in areas without rainfall for nine months! If you want your plant to have a curlier appearance, water less often. If you want the leaves to be straighter and thicker, water more often. I have one Xerographica that I've keep indoors and only sprayed, but you can also soak them without harm. Just be very careful that if you do decide to soak them, make sure no water stays in that base. The plant should dry upside down with nice air movement to avoid rotting. Good luck!

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately not. Once the leaves turn brown and crispy, there is no coming back. If the entire plant is dry and crispy, its very likely a goner.

    I didn't know you are supposed to soak them! I thought just had to spray with a fine mist once a week or so.

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  7 років тому +6

      It depends on where they live. If your air plants are indoors, where it is usually drier air, you might mist them regularly and soak them every so often for an extra boost. I live in FL and I spray down my air plants out doors, they don't soak. But my indoor ones tend to do better when I mist them every day/every other day and soak them once a week or every other week. But I've also gone on travel for a week and my indoor ones have been just fine with no care for that time. And I've given some beginner-friendly Ionanthas to my mother who is lucky to mist them every other week, and yet they are still healthy! Just watch your plants for signs of thirst and you'll do just fine!

    The center of my air plant which I thought was going to flower but never has, has dry brown on it, not the whole center just parts. What is going on with it? It is in an open container & I soak it one hour every other week & 15 minutes on the other two.

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  5 років тому +2

      Without seeing the plant, it is hard to tell.
      Rot would be a dark color in the center and if you pull it gently it will eventually fall apart.
      If it is not getting enough water, you will usually see the tips of the leaves turn brown, but the plant can still survive. If this is the case, you can try misting it very lightly every 2 days and see if that helps. Once a leaf turns brown, it will not turn green again. But it should stop more brown spots from forming.
      The other thing to check is for sun damage. If your plant gets strong, direct sunlight (especially if that sunlight goes through glass like a terrarium) the plant can sunburn. Then it turns a yellow-brown color where the sun burns it.
      Good luck!

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  3 роки тому

      It depends on what type of plant it is and where it lives. If your plant is indoors and dries out very quickly, then dunking it in water every day and letting it dry upside down is fine. Or just mist the leaves lightly every day. But if the plant has a bulbous base (rounded and could store water), then every day is probably too much

  • @RCmaniac1231
    @RCmaniac1231 Рік тому

    What about for very mesic species like butzii or bulbosa?

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  Рік тому

      Great question! Those are much harder to tell, since their leaves are essentially curled up into tube shapes. They have evolved that way since they live in moist areas year-round. Which means keeping them on a frequent watering schedule is best. I display mine upside down at all times, so I'll often dunk those tips in water to prevent the ends from drying out and browning. Since the water can't run into the bulb that way, it won't over-water or harm them.

    Hello, I have a Tectorum snow and I want to know if it needs to be exposed to the sun or not and how it shows that it needs more water.thanks in advance

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  6 років тому +1

      Tectorum plants are picky in how they get water. First, they LOVE bright light. They are native to the high mountains of the Peruvian Andes where they get plenty of sunlight. They also need lots of air flow. I would never soak a Tectorum, but instead provide it with gentle and regular misting. It needs time to be dry in between watering. If you live in a high humidity area like I do in FL, you need extra air flow for these guys from a fan or similar.
      It took me a few Tectorum plants to figure out how to care for them properly, but once you figure it out for your unique area they are just beautiful!

    help overnight my carput medusa looked dehydrated. i soaked for 20 minutes. now the foliage feels kinda limp? if that is a good description.much softer than usual. how do i help? how to tell they need water and what is the best way to water

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  7 років тому +1

      First I would check the base of the plant. Caput-medusae have a rounded, bulbous base, which means they can catch water in that base. If they do not dry completely after watering in the base, it can rot. If the foliage is limp, that may be an indication of rot. Is it black? Squishy? For now, I would go easy on the waterings or only get the tips of the leaves wet. Keep it in a location with nice air movement and bright, indirect light. You'll know if it rotted because it will not recover and will fall apart. But if it's still alive, it can make a slow recovery and perk back up! Good luck!

      Sometimes it is hard to tell, especially with smaller plants. Pay attention to the curving leaves and the tips of the leaves. If the tips dry out and turn brown, it can mean you should mist the plant more often and focus on the tips. There is a learning curve to getting it just right. Good luck!

    If that's a tillansia zerograghica can it tolerate shade?

    • @AirPlantLady
      @AirPlantLady  5 років тому +1

      Tillandsia xerographica naturally ranges from southern Mexico to Guatemala and El Salvador, usually in the desert. It can tolerate partial shade, but would be happiest in bright light at least part of the day.
      Interestingly, if you provide more water for this plant the leaves will start to straighten out. If you reduce the watering, the leaves will start to curl more. Just avoid extremes.

      Some other things to consider are where the plants and vases are located. Make sure they are not directly under a heater/air conditioning vent or in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight through glass is a bad idea!
      I have not had luck with open top vases because it does not seem to give them enough room to breathe. I use spherical terrariums that have 3 openings so my indoor fans can circulate the air all around them.
      It is a learning curve. You might try leaving the plants out of the vases for a couple weeks to see if anything improves.
