Neil Peart is well known for his huge setups and the huge array of toms he usually puts up. But how do you play a kit this big and what methods does he use to navigate around a kit of this size?
Chris Hoffmann listened to a lot of Rush's music and has some answers for you.

Neil was a master. He didn't just have great chops, he had a distinct sound. Trying to re-create that 70's and 80's Rush sound is challenging but certainly possible. RIP, brother

Neil was a master and and a hero for me. For me the Rush songs are still too difficult to play….I started drumming very very late in my life. Would be a dream to be able to play Rush songs perfectly.

Just off the top of my head, The Pass might be a good place to start! It's a fairly straight ahead, slow to mid tempo groove with nothing too crazy in it. Plus it's a pretty great song!

@@mjm5081 hello my drumming friend. Oh yes, THE PASS. I do play that song already and true, it is the only Rush song which I know which is not too crazy on the drum part. I practice a bit the song Chemistry aswell.
      All the best.

All rush's songs are fun to play on drums. Try cygnus x-1(not easy) but if you listen for years it becomes fun to play

Great job Chris. You looked like you were having so much fun I ended up watching the whole thing. Cool way of breaking down the fills too.

Thanks! This was a really helpful breakdown with exercises too, makes me more comfortable to try and jam to some amazing tracks! Well taught, thanks again! Rest peacefully Mr. Peart knowing your drumming awesomeness is living on (as best we can) in every drummer to ever pick up the sticks, get on a big kit and jam!

DW's sound never impressed me, but that set sounds really good. They just need some REMO black dot heads.

You Tube is the definition of being racist (someone who looks for racism where it doesn't exist). They asked if I wanted to edit my comment because it might not be suitable for some people. WTF?

I feel the "Neil Peart huge drum kit" thing is overrated - Alex Van Halen had a much much bigger kit. And of course Terry Bozzio and Mike Mangini.
