I used to test ship piping systems on 600 class subs at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. That model brings back a lot of memory. I would'nt mind having one of those myself. Nice model
I was on the Sculpin SSN590 from 84-87, Nuclear Machinist mate. I was one. of the divers and used to do the maneuvering watch on the sail planes. In drydock we had to clean the screw with brass brushes.
I served onboard USS Skipjack from 1986 to 1988. Collectively, the Skipjack class subs were referred to as "S" girls as their names all began with the letter S. MMC(SS) USN Ret.
Very cool to see. My grandfather was a sonar man on Skipjack at some point during the late 50s or very early 60s, so this class of boat has a special place in my family.
Was a nuc on Snook SSN 592 76-79, would have shed a tear but couldnt think of any fond memories except the day I departed her. We used to put a noise maker on her (for skimmers) for playing games when we were the rabbit, the camera looked just it. I can think of many times when the rabbit died. ETCM/SS USN (RET)
That kit came out nice. DeBoer can't be faulted for the hull being incorrect. It was built using the best plans at the time and Dennis did a good job using what he had available.
That was really interesting. I've just finished converting a Revell skipjack to RC and this one shares a lot in common with it. I do wish I'd tried to make the sail planes work. I of course made mine the Shark! Great stuff.
Excellent model. I just happened to come across this video, I was not even aware that RC submarines existed. I found it all very interesting and will take a look at some of your other videos now.
I HAD to watch this vid. When I was a kid, 4th grade or so, I got into models. The Skipjack (never forgot that name) was the very first model I ever built. I was into subs and ships, then planes, while my brother was into cars and monsters. I later got into cars big time...(never cared for the monsters, though...) Funny, as I get older, I realize more and more the truth of the saying..."The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys."
I love this video. Was smiling like a kid watching it run in your pond. The Skipjack Class SSN has been my favorite submarine from as far back as I can remember and/or the day I got the old Aurora kit for the first time. I bought many iterations of that kit when I was younger as I ended up destroying them sooner or later in our pool. The DeBoer RC kit seems great. Glad to see I'm not the only one mildly fascinated by submarines.
Beautiful detail on the model. It appears that the foreplanes turn opposite of the stern planes, which I hadn't thought of before, but makes sense from a maneuverability standpoint.
Bob, A beautiful model ,thanks for sharing your video. Boats and submarines have always been an interest of mine. I am going to " borrow " the idea for the magnetic couplings on the control surfaces. I am going to try the idea for coupling linkages for my model trains where it needs to come apart easily. Thanks again.
Nice model. I can see where you would want a little positive buoyancy with the ballast flooded so you could easily retrieve it if the receiver failed or the battery died.
Video's like this seem to make me very envious of your skills. I tried my hand (make that shaky hand) at building just a basic plastic model. To say I have the skill level of a 10 year old would be overstating my abilities. Just imagine trying to glue two small pieces together with shaky hands. Its kind of like shooting at a moving target while you are moving in a different direction. Parts end up glued where that don't belong! I hide the finished project in the closet. Maybe one day I'll have enough money to commission someone with your skill level to make one for me.
Are you sure its the periscope that lets the air out? My non expert guess is that the mast with the lantern is the periscope. In the old days periscopes were usually circular, much less weight to do a 360 degree then. My guess is that the other mast(=letting air out) is a communication or surveilence mast(or a snorkel mast without the top).
I think she still holds the USN submarine speed record with a 5 bladed screw... a shipmate of mine on Russell 687 - Dusatko an ICman served on Skipjack...
Bob do you have a full build video on this particular skip jack? I just joined my local club and met Sub Ed, he was with you over at the Groton CT fun run, this past Sunday Sept 15 he brought an amazing Sub to run after I saw it I was hooked! I’m loving this particular skip jack as it is NOT too big and looks beautiful and very realistic.
andreavcc If you watch Bob's other videos he often says he keeps ballest light for client too get use too boat then they can add more ballest for deeper depth . Don't want too lose your boat first time out because you went too deep and can't drive! 😆😆
Can you give more resources about instruction how it goes down and up in water? the mechanism behind sinking and climbing. and did you perform a radio test that how deep the signal still being received by the device?
www.rc-submarine.com/rc-submarine-technology Depth is a function of distance. The further away, the more shallow you need to be. Contaminants such as minerals and chemicals greatly reduce range. In practical application, you can get to periscope depth at a distance of over 100ft with no issues.
I'd like to see a replica of the USS Halibut in this scale. I have a 1:350 scale model of it and it's too tiny to make into RC(only about a foot long and an inch wide). And you could make both versions (missile ops and special ops) I served on her back in '73-'74 on special ops. A VERY unique boat from the first glance. Sadly, when she was decommissioned they scrapped her(facepalm).
FYI.....In the Navy, a vessel that can be transported by another vessel is referred to as "A boat". Traditionally, subs have always been referred to as "boats".
well, its a model, so, no need to go deeper than you can see. as long as its close to neutral buoyancy, just moving forward and using the dive planes should get you close enough. outside that. get your waders on.
@@gremlin60 You can. You just don't want to do any deep dives when you think the battery is getting near low because you have to throttle up to the surface so it can purge.
The boat has been ballasted to make it positive bouyant so that if something happens, itll still rise to the surface regardless unless the watertight container implodes or is compromised.
Have a couple friends that were assigned to Skipjacks. They loved them and still have great memories. Great vid!

I was onboard the USS Skipjack SSN 585 during 78-80. It was the first boat I qualified on. Great boat. Great crew.
I was on Skipjack at the end in the late 80s. How bad did it smell in 78?
Sir give me the assembly of submarine in PDF please
I was on the skipjack in the 60's. Still had some of the plank owners on board. Great boat, great crew

Immediately want one. My spark for RC boats has come back recently and subs are definitely something I want to try!
magnetic connectors! I am not a model builder and these may have been around for awhile but WOW.. what a great idea what fun
Excellent model. I just happened to come across this video, I was not even aware that RC submarines existed. I found it all very interesting and will take a look at some of your other videos now.
Received the photo etch parts today for my 1/72 Skipjack. Can't wait to get started on her. Thanks Subguy! 👍

Another great build Bob! I'm a Uboat guy but this 1/48 scale has got my interest in modern boats. Hooah!😁
Very nice modell! Gratulation. I worked 4 jeahrs on german submarine.

Wow thanks a lot, I have been wondering about a RC submarine for years
Simply amazing
Try that next time with a periscope and the camera kept inside the submarine if that will work
Which type of antenna should we use if the RC submarine has to fully submerge into water say about 2 ft depth
Bob the German sub is awesome great work ..
Very impressive, amazing RC Submarine!

Very cool toy. ..Kinda like the Jag F1 in the background.
Now that is a real miniature of a submarine! Nicely done sir!
Great Job! congratulations for your work impressive and very well presented!
Nice bit of kit
Great Model, I served aboard The USS SHARK SSN591 in the early 70's

beautiful model...awesome build
First time to see a submarine toy.
Beautiful model and I enjoyed your presentation very much. Thanks for showing your work!
Very nice video.. :) Did anyone notice the 7:23 Red Jaguar F-Type in the background? Beautiful looking car!

"SSN Thresher" was boat 593. Seeing your model brings the destruction of the "Thresher" into startling clarity.

which trans meter used in submarine??

that's amazing I also want to make it do you have a video if there is one please share it with me please
Reverify our range to target, one ping only.
I don't get it once the ballast is 100% full of water, where does the pump gets it's air from to empty it again ? does it create a vacuum ?
How much is total cost of this sub?

How do you fix the two boat parts together? Are there screws to fix it?

So the battery is outside of the water tight cylinder? Is it some kind of special battery that's water-proof?
hey I think you do a great job love your channel
Great vid
Now that's a proper man cave
Cool. Why didn't you incorporate the camera into the sail? Now it looks like a sub with a camera attached to the back.
nice car!
Love this boat Bob.

Submarines are called boats by submariners and I'm a submariner. You don't understand.
What radio frequency are u using to control this sub . Will 900mhz get me few yards range
Very cool!
Love your vids bud. Awesome work!
Now this si actually really cool.ni fly rc nitro and gas airplanes. We actually have ponds here for this purpose. I think I'm gonna get one
So cool
I love it
Yea but how does it perform in the snow?
Pretty cool
How does it evacuate the ballast tanks to surface? Does it need to be on the surface to suck in air through the periscope?
Yup....gotta get the snorkel above water to blow the tank.
so if you go to deep you cant get up again?
well, its a model, so, no need to go deeper than you can see. as long as its close to neutral buoyancy, just moving forward and using the dive planes should get you close enough. outside that. get your waders on.
