These are very decent reels for big cat, they are pretty much a clone of the old Shakespeare Tidewater series or more precisely the old Shakespeare SKP 30 with the polymer frame. I have several Okumas as well as several old Tidewater 30Ls and 30LA s that I started using back in the early 80s when I got hooked on monster cat fishing long before catfishing was cool and are still being used today, some after over 30 years of catching big cats up to 50+ pounds.

The Okuma Classics are amazing reels for the money. Also, the Shakespeare ATS is fantastic and in the same price range. Just slightly above those are the Ming Yang 60 series and the KastKing Rover. I own multiples of all these and recommend them with no hesitation.

use the Shakespeare ATS15's daily for Saltwater bull redfish, sheepshead, black drum, and seatrout. Tried the Okuma's.....oh so crappy! Sent them back. dog on anti-reverse would let the handle skip backwards all the time under load.

Do you have videos explaining how you have the reel set up. Meaning in terms of line used and drag settings you may leave it on and what not to keep bird nest from happening.

I' still have 2 of these reels after 4 years of fishing no complaints whatsoever but I have found one you my friend will like better ,get a a Shimano tr 100 g and you will never buy another reel for your monster cats !

The one in the video u are showing is $60+ and the one you linked in the description is a different reel than the black and gold one in the vid.
The Classic XT CLX-300L is practically the same thing as the CLX-300La
I tried to get the same 1 on amazon and now it is $103. They have a all black one for forty something but its a 300 LA and not a xt.
I use the 300LA. Pretty much the same thing as the XT.

Practice, practice, practice and repeat lol
When you do practice make sure you thumb the spool with a little tension when casting
What do you consider the minimum amount of line for big cats
Depends on the reel. I usually spool 125 yards of 40-50 lb mono on these particular reels.
Is this a castable reel for surf fishing?
I would think so.
Do these work good for bank fishing
Yes.
Can this reel be used for saltwater fishing?

That will work just fine. I have one of those models.
Well it is one thing to say this reel is ok and will catch fish. But it is simply not true that this reel is 'top quality'. What about daiwa shrapnel then? Or shimano calcutta? Are they in same class? Also okuma is NOT a top brand. Do not kid yourself. Okuma is not even in top 5 brands, and is debatable if its in top 10. To give u a hint, that clicking sound you hear when u reel is your antireverse resth clicking, because this reel doesnt have an antireverse bearing- a feature present even on cheap ebay reels these days. I agree with u than nobody needs expensive reels to catch fish, but just dont talk about top quality.
