A Most Terrifying Canyon Descent

  • I ventured over the range and towards Simi Valley in search of fresh descents, and descents I did find! Black Canyon is the shortest of the descents I rode, but by far the scariest. The road is badly beaten up with holes and long wheel-eating cracks waiting around blind corners. The sections that you can open up on are seriously steep, and before you know it you're hitting 70km/h as a tight blind corner pops up ahead.
    One of those descents that every time you make it down you'll go 'whew!' and breathe a sigh of relief as a big grins appears on your face.

    I'm an ex biker that fell in love with cycling. Granted, on a bike (the one without engine) you don't have that mad torque, the engine roars and the insane speed that you get on a bike (the one with engine), but all what you get you earn it. It's just you and a 10 kg device and with just that you can comute, have loads of fun, ride downhill with sensations and go wherever you want without having to stop at the gas station or be left on the highway shoulder waiting for breakdown truck because your engine failed. Besides it's all green energy and good for your health...

      If you want to learn how to descend fast on a road bicycle you must first learn good bike handling skills. Specifically steering and braking. I've written many articles on what it takes to Brake Steer and Turn (BST method) a two-wheeled machine safely and efficiently. 👍
      There are different approaches to learning how to be efficient and safe on a bicycle. And remember efficiency breeds speed. Once you understand the physics and learn how to control your machine the speed will build and come more naturally.
      A Surefire way to become a good bike handler is to take to a motorbike. Off road would be my first choice. If that's not possible, the second best way to learn good bike handling skills is to start mountain biking. I'm predicating this advice on the fact that there is little natural ability or you may have a lot of trepidation. And by the way that is all normal, very few people have the ability to go fast without the ability to suppress fear. Managing the perception of risk and fear is a key component of riding fast.
      There is no such thing as big balls, or fearless riding that is just a meme or a misnomer. The fastest riders in the world will tell you they are scared shittless at times. From Rossi, Marquez, McGuiness, Rea, Hickman, et al. As well as From the fastest DH World Cup riders... if you're not scared then you're either lying or not human. 😄 The best and the fastest manage those perceptions of fear with near perfection.
      Slow speed balance skills, learning to modulate your braking, understanding and practicing the subtle inputs to the bars ( counter steering ) along with body steering are all good skills drills to practice.
      I offer many examples of drills to practice on any bike into various articles I have written. 👌 also you should think about reading up on some related material. Motorcycle racer & coach Nick Ienatsch. Pick up a copy of a Twist of the wrist, or

    • @davidefabris7753
      @davidefabris7753 3 роки тому

      Obviously you can go blind and base on your own experience, you can read the road and the sketchiest parts but if you fail, no much chances to save with a bike at 60 km/h. If you know the road you can go way more faster and choose the right lines to go faster and safer.

    Just want to ask do you counter steer in the corner?

    • @archetypex65
      @archetypex65 4 роки тому

      Whether consciously or not counter steering is what makes a two wheeled inline vehicle turn. Counter steering on a bicycle is very subtle because of the light weight of the machine. Countersteering combined with body steering or body lean is how you make a bicycle properly turn especially at higher speeds. But those who consciously countersteer will make better decisions and typically be better bike handlers. It only takes light pressure on the bars, no need to have a heavy hand or make abrupt inputs to the handlebars. Smooth steering and braking inputs will result in a safe and efficient ride no matter what speed you are traveling at.

    • @a286rules
      @a286rules 4 роки тому

      Countersteering messes with your head when you first start doing it but can be practiced on slow comers first and you'll never go back to using sooo much upper body again...left turn, pressure on the left hand and vise versa, once your comfortable in your head you won't be puffing down the hill wasting energy
