Ken Squier said it best “we were 7 seconds away from the greatest Daytona 500 ever”
But can it top the 1979 Daytona 500
@@HotStrings_ yeah, it can.
I feel like buried beneath the passing of Dale, this racing product itself was actually pretty good
The first 199 laps was absolutely the one greatest Daytona 500’s ever!
imagine being michael waltrip can't celebrate your only win at the time because a good friend and an absolute legend of the sport died during the race.
@@BigOleMatty I mean on the bright side he did get to celebrate with Dale Jr at the Pepsi 400 later that year.

I believe it was Dale Sr who said that racing package was gonna get somebody hurt or killed.....Great racing but at what price.....
“Mikey and Dale jr, the two DEI cars”
Steve Park “Am I a joke to you!?”
Especially after what happened one week later lmao
As someone once said, this is the greatest Daytona 499.5 ever
Respect for not showing the crash ✊
I got PTSD from that crash. Every time I see it, i just completely break down. I was only in first grade at the time so seeing a extremely well known driver die on live TV broke me until the following Sunday. School was a huge pain since I was extremely down and not my usual self, which everyone I knew understood since they knew i watch nascar.
“If they don’t do anything to these cars, it’s gonna end up killing somebody”
Those were some very eerie last words from Dale… still can never get past him saying that.
This could’ve been the best race in nascar history but ended in a horrifying heart breaking way. We miss you dale. And we miss the old era of nascar
Yes, we miss you Dale.

Certainly very chilling considering what took place later on

respect to you for stopping it when you did, i'm sure alot of people wanted to see you react to the finish for reasons beyond the actual race itself and at the expense of increased views you chose to stick to the race and nothing more. i love it
I found Jeff’s interview eerie and gave me goosebumps, this was like childhood history for me I grew watching everything from all the practice happy hour qualifying and all three series races Thursday through Sunday from end of the 90’s through 2015 when Jeff retired. But this race is very unforgettable it was intense
Yeah and Earnhardt Sr’s comments himself made it even more eerie after Tony wrecked he said Richard (Childress) if they don’t do something to these cars it’s going to end up killing somebody
You should watch the 2000 Daytona 500, you'll be struggling to stay awake on that one
I always find myself watching and hoping the end would be different.. I was 7 years old, and it’s the only day of my preteen life I remember vividly start to finish
Same here. 100%
I was 10
i remember being 5. My grandfather just knew as soon as he didn't get out what had happened
I was about to turn 20 in the spring. Around that time (as Dale Jr's hair style showed later that year) one of the popular hair styles for guys was short and bleached. I was bleaching my hair that day at home. When I got done the race had already ended but only by about 2 or 3 minutes. My mother was angry because Earnhardt got wrecked. He was her favorite. That time, AOL was the internet provider for our household. They had an article that said "Earnhardt Dies at Daytona." She screamed and read the headline outline to us. And she began crying. Within a few minutes, the TV had "breaking news" saying Earnhardt had died. Very sad. And also a sign of the future with internet breaking news faster than TV news.
John Andretti and Bobby Hamilton on the same row hit me super hard.
Everyone will talk about Sale, and rightfully so, but I really miss John and Bobby.
Also Jason Leffler died a couple years back. RIP to several drivers from this race.
@@bond007osu yep a lot of drivers In this race died John Andretti Bobby Hamilton Sr 1957-2007 Dale Earnhardt 1951-2001 Jason Leffler you mentioned really eerie that that many drivers from this race died
One thing people don’t talk about enough I feel like is how much air Tony got that car was super high in the air
What more is there to say than his car was super high in the air?
I saw him show that car to Jeff in his garage, the bar right above the driver seat was broken, the ceiling almost caved into him he flipped so hard. Almost ended the race early with a different tradgedy, Jeff said that’s something fans don’t understand about being a driver.
In Michael Waltrip's book, Mikey claims that Dale Earnhardt had a plan for the 500, or all the super speed way races for the future, which also resulted to Jr and Mikey's teamwork at these tracks, the plan was for whoever gotten the lead with the certain amount of laps left, their teammates will help them win the race. Dale Jr was staying behind Mikey the whole way once it became clear it was time to help his teammate. Dale Sr was making sure no one was going to ruin his plan. Sadly, that plan came a heavy heavy price. 😢
If Dale Sr didn't die, this would've been the greatest Daytona 500 ever.
I agree
It still is, it had everything and all the emotions. Even after 20 years it is still one of those races that had a lot of storylines.
yeah
The 2020 Daytona 500 gets slept on too, similarly incredible racing product overshadowed by the last lap. Thankfully much better outcome!
Hey leuel what up
I completely agree with this. The 2020 500 is one of the best, but it gets overshadowed by the ending.
@@thejrbuiscut6213 ✌🏽
@@Leuel48Fan haven't seen u in a while
Earnhardt intentionally let Waltrip in front of him. He was never trying to get first. He was shuffling the deck to get the 3 cards he wanted up front. He wanted to go 123. Waltrip, Jr., and him.
Also: he could have won this race. If he would have tried, he may still be alive today.
I never understood why he did that until I read Michael's book. I mean, I thought he was getting ready to win that race and Dale was right where he needed to be and make that late race charge like he did at Talladega in 2000. Even after 20 years it doesn't seem real.
Chad knaus was stacy Compton's crew chief!
@Mar Leski not only that but at Michigan in either 99 or 2000 DW gave some advice for Compton and Compton got a pretty decent finish and start
You showed tremendous respect at the end. I’m in tears.
For someone like myself who started watching NASCAR in 99 makes me feel old when I see these you tubers like Eric and iceberg and black flags matter and radman who dint even see a lot of the greats race before they retired but make all these in depth videos
Kurt once said that Dale flipping him off was the first and last major memory of Dale Sr. he has. In his seven 2000 starts, he was almost always laps down, and never got to really race with him.
In the 2000 400 miler at Homestead Kurt Busch and Dale Sr rubbed fenders as well. Or rather Sr moved Busch because a week earlier at Rockingham he got into Dale Jr.
Also, I think Jr said he wanted to pull out and win but he knew that the plan was to push Michael, and he knew Sr wouldn’t go with him
2001 was such a weird year. Dale sr passed away and changed Nascars future. WWF bought WCW changed wrestling’s future. And then 9/11 happened and changed the whole country’s future. 2001 for some reason was one whole big catalyst for almost everything that is different today.
Dale Sr.'s death saved NASCAR and pushed safety measures. So many deaths before this day, too. So happy to have fallen in love with this sport. Raise Hell, Praise Dale.
Radman, no one is going to hate you or dislike you for just stopping the video right before what happened to Dale Sr. I honestly believe that was a full class act of you being respectful to Dale and to the fans themselves, yes they all know what happened but a lot of them are probably happy that you just stopped right there before the accident happened. As a 2002 kid, I have never seen the 2001 Daytona 500 in person but I have seen clips/videos of what happened to Sr on that day. Thank you for reacting too this and showing us your reactions, especially with how goofy you were being during the crank it up section 😂
Jr mentioned in a video somewhere that his dad explained they were gonna all work together to win this race and in the last laps jr didn’t wanna do the plan and wanted to win it or himself but since his dad was behind him he really couldn’t do anything so he was trying to think the whole time of how to pass Michael without pissing his dad off and without messing this whole thing up the set up but ig it never materialized and jr just decided to settle for second to not have to really deal with the shit his dad might give him or screwing over Michael. Basically tho jr was told the plan and he kids was like whatever man I ain’t working with anyone and wanted to win it himself the whole weekend even but he didn’t wanna piss off his dad or ruin the 123 finish they had setting up to happen cause he wanted to win so that’s just kinda what jr was thinking the whole time.
Fun fact they ran this package in the Busch Nationwide for years up until they changed to their new car.
16:56 ignore the dog in the background
Seen the race several times. What a shame it’s not in higher quality.
My favorite race of all time is the following Talladega race. 2001 Talladega 500. Fucking awesome. If there’s any you decide to watch, watch that one. What a race.
If I remember correctly the late Bobby Hamilton Sr 1957-2007 won that race
Hamilton won the Aarons 499 in April of 2001 (spring race). The Talladega 500 I believe he's referencing is the EA Sports 500 that Dale Jr won in October of 2001 (fall race). And I agree 100% with you. Been wanting to see that race in entirety since the day i got NASCAR Thunder 2003 back in '02 when I did the lightning challenge for that race. When NASCAR uploaded the entire race on it's channel last year, the racing gods answered my prayers. Definitely in my top 5 favorite races of all time!
@@theJessegalvez The race wasn't sponsored by Aarons until 2002. The spring race was unsponsored in 2001; diehard wasn't sponsoring the spring race anymore and they must not have decided to go with any sponsor that year.
So no, the spring race was called the Talladega 500 that year.
You should watch the Dega race that Dale won several months earlier. Had the same rules package as the 500. It was as insane or more insane than this race was at some points.
This was a great race until the end. Good thing you didn't show the last lap crash, I don't want to relive that tragedy.
I know a lot of folks will probably hate me for this, but.....thank you for not showing the ending...I was 9 at the time, just getting into NASCAR, it didn't look that bad...but when I woke up the next morning and heard whispers in the kitchen......that was the worst day of watching motorsports and even 20 years later, the pain is still fresh.
So at the time of Stewarts wreck, there were something like 25 positions between him and Bobby LaBonte. There is an interview between Stewart and Jeff Gordon where Stewart explains what it was like after the crash. He said Bobby came over to his car and asked if he was okay, asked if they could cut off the roof to get Tony out of the car. Tony's response? "I'm fine. No, no. Don't tear it apart. I don't want them to wreck the car..."
Tony was running 4th fighting Ward for 3rd and Bobby was running 27th at the time the big wreck ocurred. Robby Gordon was drafting Tony but when he tried to get back behind Ward he ended up turning Ward around turning Tony around flipping Tony upside down
still blows my mind that Kurt Busch competed in this race
Ive been a fan since 1999 and yes he did compete. He ran extremely well all race long literally among the top 10 and top 5 for the majority of the race. He had a instant knack for the draft.
It was the only time he shared the same racetrack as Sr. And Sr. Flipped him off on the track lol. Kurt said he'll always remember that.
@@bond007osu No its not. Kurt Busch made 7 Cup starts in 2000 and actually traded paint with Earnhardt Sr in the Miami 400 at Homestead. Rather Earnhardt moved him at Homestead because Busch wrecked Dale Earnhardt Jr. a week earlier at Rockingham.
@@Be.authentic_ Really? Ok well I didn't know that. Interesting
@@bond007osu Yea I saw the entire 2000 season. During that race Jack Roush stated that his unatural raw talent could win him a championship in a few short years in Cup if he'd be guided in the right direction. Well, he was right lol
Mad respect for pausing it at the end. Even if people are mad I agree it's the right decision. We all have seen it before and don't need to see it again.
10:00- 10:39 You spoke some truth there. This year(2021) was my first year watching Fox's broadcast week to week in a few years. The most noticeable thing for me was it felt like the quality of their telecast had declined. I 'm sure the pandemic might have hurt some of what they could do. However if you compare 2001-2008 to more recent years, it's like they no longer give a damn.
I started watching a handful of races at the end of the 2000 season, but don't remember much. Really made a point to learn the sport in anticipation of the 2001 season. The 2001 Daytona 500 was an incredible race, I remember so much of it. The racing hooked me as a new fan, it's just a shame what happened to Earnhardt Sr. in the last turn. It would be a classic replayed before the start of each season otherwise.
Pfft I had a very different experience and I just learned while I was watching races and reading so many NASCAR books year after year in my Preschool through Kindergarten and Elementary days. There where literally days I wanted to stay home to watch Monday delayed races but never got that chance..
I miss the old eras of nascar.
Fun fact about Stacy Compton, his crew chief for this race was Chad Knaus, and your reaction to him being on the front row was priceless.
Despite what happened on the last lap it was a good race
RIP dale sr
I'm die hard Harvick since 01 so I'm glad you mentioned 07 Brother!!
I was 11 me and my dad watched this together. We taped our favorite races…. I’ve been watching since I was a baby. We had a 9 car diecast case. When dale died he was the middle car middle row. And we turned his car backwards. It was an extremely difficult thing for my dad. He was a GM Goodwrench tech, and he was a diehard fan. I feel for more micky…
Best 500 ever.... until the final turn on the final lap
Kurt Bush was the last guy to get flipped off by Dale Earnhardt
Fun fact about the aero package. The roof deflector was not added to give more drag. It actually was placed on the cars to give more downforce to the front of the cars because with the spoiler and wicker on the rear it was causing the cars to be very tight when turning. The splitter does this today.
The Fall 200 Talledega race has a great package as well, no big one, but that is one fun amd entertaining race to watch
Props man! Great video! Need to do some more of these! Think we have all seen the end enough times. Excellent video!!
The fact that Jeff Hammond choose Waltrip to win the race was absolutely crazy.
Stacy Compton and the dodges where on the front row for all the restrictor plate races in 2001
But Michael Waltrip even though winless in 400 plus starts was always known for being great at Daytona Talladega. I remember watching him in the 1990s and in underfunded equipment would put the moves on em all even Sr. So with DEI being a known up and coming and solid plate program under the watchful eye of Sr, I didnt think at the time it was underdog pick.
@@Be.authentic_ yea I get that 💯 it’s just that In 15 years prior to 2001 he never won and you see dale jarrett and Gordon Marlin and of course sr winning they were the obvious favorites. If you watch the full 2001 500 waltrip wasnt even a contender till about lap 175 and the eventual big one took out a lot of good cars
@@BallSoHardWill1994 Yes I remember that race very well from start to finish. Michael Waltrip was making his way through the field and was already a contender before the big one happened. But with Stewart, Gordon and most of the other heavy hitters out it made it a bit easier. Kinda, because they still went 3 and 4 wide right after that wreck like nothing happened. I understand how Mikey could bee seen as an underdog. I guess in hindsight im a bit blinded because right after he won the 2001 500 he went on to easily prove that that plate win wasn't a fluke along with the help of that other plate master in Dale Earnhardt Jr.
@@Be.authentic_ yea it sucked that he only won at restrictor plate tracks wished he won an oval or 2
@@BallSoHardWill1994 me too. His best chance to do that was from 2002 and especially 2003 when his team was 5th in points deep in the second half of the season. But 5 straight awful finishes before he won Talladega killed his momentum of winning on an oval for that year.
Watching it live, it was a very intense time. The drivers knew it was going to end poorly. Most thought serious injuries would be the worst case, but no one expected what would happen!
The Dr. Gas Boom Tube exhaust pipe has the best sounds in NASCAR Cup Series I hope he's still around and also I hope NextGen can use it for Daytona and Talladega in 2022 season

You’re right about 47:58. It would’ve been better if Sterling had turned Dale right there.
I was 2 months old when this race happened an live maybe 20 minutes from Welcome NC where RCR is headquartered an in a Earnhardt heavy house
Honestly this was the greatest race NASCAR has ever put on in my honest opinion, despite the unfortunate tragic death of Dale Earnhardt.. and it’s HD feed should be uploaded from NASCAR. We are all grown.. and everyone knows what happened. Death is apart of life. This race was flat out amazing and it’s such a shame the way it ended, but I don’t think it’s needs to be just completely ignored and forgotten by NASCAR because a driver died. You will be hard pressed to find 199 laps of hard great racing that’s better than this.
I think the reason Kurt Busch has a bad temper is because he was the last person to be flipped off by Dale Sr. And when dale passed, Kurt absorbed all of Dale’s temper, and mixed it with his.
It was such a great race!!!! Until the end!!
I'm thankful to have grown up getting to watch this racing and Dale Sr. Seeing the old school guys in their younger years. I'm talking mid to early 00s.
Let's hope this next gen car can bring back some of that style of racing.

Unbeknownst to us all at the time was the beginning of greatest plate dynasty by a multi car team ever seen as Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr would terrorize plate racing for the next 4 years in both Winston Cup and the Busch series. I witnessed it first hand. Unbelievable how ridiculously fast the 15 and 8 were.
This was an insane year. Dale passing, Harvick winning in his 3rd race, 9/11 suspended the season, and Gordon won his final championship. But this was the time Nascar was so much fun to watch.

Yup and he found a way to lose that race by not taking tires on the last pit stop making him a sitting duck when other drivers behind him did. Jeff Gordon made sure he paid the price for that mistake.
Actually, Rusty was the beneficiary of the last lap crash. Rusty went a lap down early with a tire going down and then he had to work to get that lap back and with help of the big crash and then Earnhardt's subsequent crash, Rusty ended up finishing third instead of Dale, and I thought Rusty was the one that crashed instead of Dale at first until I realized that was the 3.

Maybe you didn't realize it, but kind of disappointed you didn't mention that this race was not only the first of the new Fox/NBC TV package at the time but it was also the first race back for Dodge in NASCAR since the late 70s which was a big deal. This was the first race I watched cause my Dad wanted to watch it specifically cause of Dodge's return. And they were fast cars that day too. Marlin and W. Burton had two of the fastest cars all day. Marlin became my first favorite driver. It really was the start of a new era in NASCAR. Especially for myself since 2001 was the first year I watched (I was around 13 at the time).
Running 185 vs 200 makes a difference. People get mad when they slow the cars down. But with modern aero understanding the only way to get rid of the issues entirely is to slow the cars down in combination with getting air behind the cars via ducts or other concepts
