It’s so eerie, while you’re walking around filming somewhere in the facility Earnhardt is experiencing his last morning alive. His last sunrise too. Life is short.
Yep I remember being at a Applebee's in Florida after coming back from Dr Petter s ruckmans church and hearing dale Earnhardt had died
To see the #3 so close up in the pits and think to myself Dale Earnhardt life ends in just a few hours is an eerie feeling , he was my favorite along with millions of others NASCAR has never been the same for me . Great footage !
This is definitely the most in-depth home video of a race day I've seen since the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend. Great gems and fascinating how the cars shown more than once had a key role in that race.
R.I.P. Dale and Senna
The two greatest drivers in all of Motorsport
Look how different the garage area was in 2001, holy cow
The garage area we see nowadays got constructed in time for the 2005 Speedweeks if I'm not mistaken.
This is cool footage thanks. On that day, NASCAR changed forever.
Literally hours before the sport permanently changed to never recover.
@@pacthesirActually it didnt really change a huge amount besides security in the airport we still havent learned with how slack the border is. The country really changed for the worse after the SB where Janet Jackson showed a nip at halftime. The PC police came out then and we never recovered
@MrGoombasticveryFantastic wow, my comment is 5 years old now? Wow... anyways yeah, I agree. Not much has actually changed... especially in today's world, we're very vulnerable...
You were behind Earnhardt's Pit Box the whole race. I would love to know the whole story. I bet it was a once in a lifetime experience, yet terrifying after the final lap crash.
This is incredible footage! Very cool to see behind the scenes of how the crew members worked back then

I love the sound of Earnhardt and Labonte’s engines firing up at 16:09 and 16:48
@@casperscheerstra Actually no, there was a red flag about 180 laps in. But I get your point.
Probably one of the most interesting NASCAR videos to be uploaded to the site.
Wow.
The absolute peak of NASCAR's success. Right before the stroke of midnight of the downturn... This video is metaphorically 11:59pm
JoshTheBassist if we wanna speak about popularity I think we would have to go to the last GEN 4 race before the COT was introduced
JoshTheBassist I don’t think it was the peak of NASCAR’s success. Arguably, Earnhardt’s death exposed the sport to a more mainstream public and for a few years, brought more eyes to the sport. To my mind, this was 11:58 pm as it was truly a crushing blow, but was one that NASCAR could’ve survived. Midnight struck in January 2004 when the Chase was revealed to the public and signaled the beginning of the end for NASCAR. I can’t help but be amazed how in less than 15 years, Brian France, Mike Helton, and Burton Smith destroyed what had been a steadily growing successful sport for over 50 years previously.
JoshTheBassist statistics show that the actual peak is between 2003 and 2006, it was HUGE back then. This was the first cup race I was alive for so I can only vividly remember COT and just a very little bit of the old Gen 4 but mainly from old NNS, but I still remember being in stores when I was still in preschool and there was always at least a few NASCAR sponsor banners or big displays, even in restaurants and bars back them there was sure to be NASCAR themed stuff.
5 years after your comment, NASCAR is back on the upturn.. don’t be so delusional.
The sport is doing better than ever, thankfully, with the new Gen7 Car. Despite some flaws here and there, it produces solid racing! Ratings this year for Atlanta and Vegas are also higher than last year's with some good stats in between.
Unbelievable. Bro you are taking me back in time with this one. I have so many good memories at this track.
One of the coolest videos I've seen in quite some time. Awesome, thank you for the upload!
My chest hurt when I saw the crew jumping for joy while the commentator was saying that Schrader was calling the crews to come and check on Dale asap.
They used this footage in Michaels blink of an eye and me watching this gives me chills
What freedom we still had in feb of 2001 at Daytona . If you had a pit pass then that gave you access to every place except the coach lot were the drivers would stay but everyplace else you simply walked were ever you pleased. Each team was given so many pit passes for there crew members and the folks that were there that they would be entertaining from there sponsors . Most of the corporate folks from the teams sponsors had no interest in being in the pits or garage area they wanted to be in the suites and hospitality tents set up on other parts of the grounds. Back then the garage area was a special place especially at Daytona. I had garage passes for the 2000 2001 and 2002 Daytona 500's
As a matter of fact I had garage passes to almost every cup race each year from 00 to 03 as I held a NASCAR license and worked for a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Team. And as I recall even if I didn't have the correct garage passes all I would do in those years is simply walk straight thru the gate as if I did and I belonged there and I hardly ever got stopped. Funny story in 2000 at the Daytona international speedway I was walking with 7 time ARCA Champion Frankie Kimmle and as we approached the entrance to the ARCA garage at Daytona we was stopped and given a hard time and almost denied entry to the Garage because neither me nor Frankie had any type of credentials on. The way we got in was we simply ignored the official at the gate and kept walking . Frankie was on the pole for the ARCA race that day. But that's just how it was back then. My first time in the Garage at Daytona was in 1988 I was 14 years old and had no type of credentials whatsoever as I was there as a fan staying in my parents motorhome in the infield. I saw Gregg Sacks and his team pushing his car into the garage area and I simply helped them push the car thru the gate and I had found myself in the Garage area. I ended up sneaking in for the reminder of the week and I even scored the Saturday race for Bobby Hamilton and never had any pit pass at all. Different world. Now days you can't even get into a outside parking lot for the public without registering someplace.
This is AMAZING footage bro I always wanted to go back in time for this astonishing event just to see how differently things operated and you actually brought my dreams to life😂I always wanted to see how things looked like 17 years ago in Nascar
Man it's so eerie watching this and other videos of that day. So weird to think that in just hours we would lose Dale Earnhardt. I was born and raised and still live 15 mins west of the track and I was at the 2001 bud shootout in turns 1 and 2 I was cheering for Sr and Jr and to think a few days later he would be gone..crazy
sad to say this is the last time we would see the old 3 for a very long time rip dale
A day I'd rather forget but I will stick around and listen while I work. 😢
WOW! This is AMAZING behind the scenes footage of that day! Were you associated with any crew members? Or simply had a Hot Pass? Seems like you were a DEI and Sr. fan; even before the drop of the flag, you were focusing on the 3, 8, and 15. And as fate would have it, those three cars were directly involved in the roller coaster of emotions that emerged from that race. PIT SIDE as Team 15 celebrated his win... that kind of footage is just rare from that time period!
Looks like your camera dies / runs out of tape right as you were headed to watch victory lane. I'm curious how the atmosphere was and how quick it changed as news of the seriousness of the #3 crash spread. If you have more footage, please post, although judging from the 1hr10min length, this is the entirety of tape you have from that day. Thank you for this amazing upload!
Sounds like Brett Bodine Racing got them their hot passes, from what I gathered in the video.
Love this video. Amazing perspective...would love to see more footage like this from that day. Also, interesting thing I caught a few minutes in: the guy said that Brett Bodine Racing got them their garage passes that day. Guess it was very exclusive even in those days to have such close access like they did. Wish the uploader was more responsive to our questions. Hope you and Jerry are both still alive and well!
Frankie Muniz from Malcolm in the Middle got to sit in Ken Schrader’s pit box for throughout most of the race. But then went up to the roof during the last 20 laps.
Did you also know that Frankie voiced Chester from The Fairly OddParents?
It's like.... This guy filming knew what was going to happen, he knew someone was going to get hurt really bad, or killed. We all didn't expect it to be Dale. R.i.p Dale Sr.
Dale Earnhardt Sr was my favorite Nascar driver i have his Talladega 2000 win diecast in 1/64 scale.
Wow this is a really cool video to see. It's crazy to look back and see how much the track has changed in 17 years or so. Also neat to see Trump there behind Earnhardt's box. I wonder how many more videos out there are like this that may not end up on youtube. Thanks for uploading!
Great Footage ! I have 18 of those mini vhs cassettes full from Daytona 1998 when we got garage passes.... The garage at DIS has so many levels of passes.... Some are paddock passes only "No garages or pit road but only behind pit road fence" , Busch garage only or cup only etc etc etc..... Never understood that ! I still have all the cassettes put up and need to convert over to dvd...... There is nothing like the feeling of electricity race morning of the 500 down in garage.... You can feel it..... As a side note... Watching the folks in garage i noticed firemen could go anywhere ! I had a grand idea to in future trips just taking a firemens coat and a extinguisher and a load of confidence and a man could walk ANYWHERE without being stopped .... lol...
Each pit stall has a fireman posted up ! They all dressed differently with exception of the big coat and each carried a extinguisher with them. They just stood or walked around pre-race and went anywhere... So FYI ... Thats a way to get full access around garage..lol
And if it was Back in 2001 you would still be able to do that kind of thing to get access but now days you wouldn't get by with doing that
so cool. its like watching a documentary, youre drawn in by the story being told, even though you know of the sade ending thats to come... you almost forget until it happens in the video. well done
Wow it's amazing the access you had to the garage back then, now you can't even get close to the access you see here.
Under normal circumstances (Pre March 2020), if you had a pit pass you'd have the exact same amount of access in the garage area.
the access hasnt really changed i just went this past summer. if you have a grandstand ticket and get there early when the gates are open you can just walk in but once the ceremonies start you have to be back in the stands. i bought a suite so i had fll access everywhere but this is what was explained to me by some of the wokrers @@erikscherer22
Can't believe Dale Earnhardt Sr has been gone for 23 years now
This is fascinating and surreal at the same time because I grew up 40 minutes away from RCR and checked-out of racing after this day for many, many years.. Just a normal day at a race until that White Flag Lap. Thanks for sharing.
Back when NASCAR was fun. I sure miss these days and Big E! Today it's a whole different ball game, and not in a good way!
NASCAR was just way better back then the years were too. Really easy to meet the drivers you could walk anywhere really and get right by the cars and pits and everything it was just a better time not all this security then 9/11 happened and it fucked everything.
2001 was a dark year that changed both NASCAR and the world forever.
I miss DALE EARNHARDT so DAM much
Me too, he was a legend. Ever since he died, nascar has gone downhill. Though nascar still had sold out crowds at races for the next few years after his death. Todays nascar is not as good as it used to be. I don't like the stages they do now. In my opinion, it's not really racing.
Kinda odd to not see any cell phones or people looking at one dam great times, this is awesome footage everything used to be so laid back back then, I went to Pocono in 2000, 2001 & 2002 when jr & Steve park flipped, and I remember being 10 years old and was aloud to walk next to the cars in the garage
Oh my God. Thank you for uploading
I gotta post some of my family's home movies, we have one of me and my dad at the track during the 2003 Dodge Dealers 400. What a race... Ricky Craven was seated as my favorite ever since the 2001 Old Dominion 500, but man, after seeing that battle with Kurt Busch, I knew I chose well.

Must be crazy looking back now and knowing what would happen that day.
There’s something about old home video cameras that’s can’t be replicated again
I was in California giving birth that morning. I think when the guy said at the beginning of the video, it was about 7:20 AM. I gave birth to my son 11 minutes later at 4:31 AM throughout that day we were watching the race and it was really sad to see that Dale Earnhardt died. This year they had the Indy 500 back at the same track. 23 years later. And my son turned 23 years old. I call him my little Dale Junior, he’s got a feisty side to him. I swear if there was reincarnation, Dale went into him lol. It was funny too because my son grew up always wanting to race cars. Thankfully he outgrew it. This was a great video. I’m glad it was found. It was very surreal watching and knowing that everything that was happening was the last for Dale and his family. Very sad. ❤
Thanks for sharing the footage man!
Thanks to this video, I was able to verify that the national anthem and the grand marshal's sound bites were actually used in "3: The Dale Earnhardt Story" movie. Pretty cool.
Did he say $50 for parking??? This video is 20yrs old!! So if parking was $50 in 2001 then what in the hell does it cost now in 2021?!? Jesus Christ!! Smh
Then they wonder why they can't fill seats and have to remove entire sections of them.
Ward Burton might have had the fastest car that day....on the back straightaway he absolutely scorched people all day long. When he got into drag races on the back stretch it was a wrap, car looked like the restrictor plate was taken off. He was a legit threat that race.
I was just saying how much meaner his engine sounded in this video compared to all the other engines we hear fire up. That thing just sounded mean
The 22 was fast on restrictor plate tracks from 01 to 03 . Bill Davis wanted that car to run well at those tracks

Never had such a hard time watching people celebrate
The day that took my passion from Nascar. I was a Gordon fan but loved watching the 3 and understood his importance for the sport. He died doing something he never did on the track, protecting his son and employee.
Seeing the #3 and guys working on it gave me a feeling i can't explain.

That Dale Sr Car Brings Back Memories I watched that race on tv with my dad and when Earnhardt hit the wall on the last lap my dad was crying his eyes out

Walking through the garage early race morning while they were tuning engines was an awesome time.
While everybody is cheering dale earnhardt is dying in his car.
Nobody knew, it shocked the world. That wreck didn't look that bad but it was. Kenny Schrader obviously knew, as did the rescue personnel but they kept quiet until the official announcement from NASCAR. It was a bad day, I still remember it so well.

Yes he said his buddy had it the whole time he was arguing with security lol
Idk why the fans were so confused. Every race from 97-2001 I was just waiting for a star to die. We lost 3 nascar and multiple others I think 7 stock car drivers in 2000. Both of my parents are surgeons. My dad is a trauma surgeon. I also became a trauma surgeon. But he always was talking about it from 94’ on. He set on a board to get airbags mandated into cars. In case you aren’t familiar a airbag in a car is a head and neck restraint device. It’s to keep the head from flying forward turning the brain and spinal cord into a sling shot. The skull fractures don’t happen because he hit is head. With the spinal cord ripped. The brain acts as a battery ram and bashes the skull too pieces. Like 8-10lb weight popping it at high velocity. Even though dale only had a 40mph loss in velocity. Basilar skull fractures are not high speed injuries as people think. We use to have fatal car accident non stop before air bags were mandatory. The side curtain airbags protects you from t-bone or side hits. The head rest keeps the head from whipping back from a rear end hit. And the steering wheel dash airbags protect from front hits.
wow… Simply Amazing
Great stuff here.

Man..this Daytona was ruined when Earnhardt died. He should have survived! Just two more months after that and he would have been 50....
It should've been the best 500 EVER. The superspeedway package the cars had was THE BEST racing we've ever had. The roof spoilers and lipped rear spoilers kept the cars closer together resulting in tons of lead changes and more drivers actually led the whole time when you add in all the drivers who was in 1st the whole race at least 16 or 17 cars lead a portion of all the laps ran for the race.

Trump will be at the 2020 Daytona 500 and has been named Grand Marshall. There are plans for him to take 1 lap in his 10 ton Cadillac called The Beast. If he puts Dake Sr's #3 on the side of his armored car and flies Dale's #3 flag while taking the lap, there won't be a dry eye at the raceway. No idea if he is planning to tribute Dale but it would be amazing if he does.

Makes me wish I could just walk up and sabotage Dale's car to make it run poorly that race. 23 years later, I still miss that man.
It's like this guy knew what was going to happen, the way he was so focused on Dale's car gives me the creeps.
CynicalBurns he was just the favorite driver.
It was his favorite driver...that's all. No more no less. Chill out
lol settle down, the #3 was literally one of the most popular cars in that garage I bet a thousand people did the same thing
Can y’all in the replies chill for a sec? He’s just making an observation. Having the camera focused on someone that eventually would die spectacularly and historically is always kind of eerie to a viewer 20 years later. So can y’all just shut the fuck up when you say “bruh it’s his favorite driver chill out bud.”
What gives me the creeps is that you can really feel a weird tension after that huge big one and the race continued. Like everybody knew that something wasn't right.
