I wish I liked this knife more. It is just missing "that something". I can see many people really liking it and I think it is good for most tasks. Like Ron says in his comment. Maybe Buck could bring back and upgraded one?
Looks like I missed some videos. I apologize for that. I found the charm you gave me in my cigar box that I keep my important stuff in so that will be back in the videos.
@@rustyminer Man I was going crazy looking for that charm. I thought it fell behind the table or something but I had put it away because the cat was knocking it around and I forgot lol.
You took it away from your cat? Oh man, 🤣🤣. I've lost stuff and went crazy to. I recently lost the liner on a discontinued knife I had dyed the scales on. I was pretty frantic because I had not had the knife long enough to really appreciate it. I looked in the garbage can just before I took the garbage out. I found it there, thank God
Hey there. I have the Select version of the Vantage, that's the most basic one. It doesn't have a backspacer so the blade can't hit that, which means no blade wrap. In fact, mine doesn't have any issues at all. It seems to be hit and miss with this model. I love the design, but as you said, the execution is not the greatest. This knife has been around for years now, Buck should upgrade it - address all the issues people have reported, skeletonize the liners, improve the action, etc. I think it still has potential, even with today's insane competition. Cheers Edit: Forgot to mention I absolutely LOVE the pocketclip. To me it's the best Buck has ever done and they should use it on as many models as possible.
Hey Ron, Yes, an upgrade would be very nice. I am sure many of their customer base is ready for another one and that alone could justify producing such a knife. Buck has some very loyal customers. So it would be low risk chance and if they hit the mainstream knife community and everyone wanted one? BINGO!!
I like that sculped scale; looks comfortable to grip, and always gravitate towards all black knives, but if the coating will come off with hot water and there is blade wrap, i'm going elsewear for a small urban tactical. I do like the bigger Bucks and understand that it was Buck that came up with the backlock. Rather than dismiss this Buck, check out the latest Bucks.
Hi tai, yeah, the coating did change with a rinse in hot water. Maybe it would all change to a uniform color over time, but after handling a few days, it looked pretty worn for not being used for much other than paper and foam. I googled "black oxide coating" as that is what I remember it being advertised as and it seems like a popular, durable coating. The blade wrap is really too bad. It can be solved with sharpenings, but should not exist in the first place. BUCK is USA company and their knives sell for more than Chinese companies of the same materials. So if you are going to argue USA makes better knives than the Chinese, you better not build issues like this into the knife. Buck has some nice knives in their line-up. You have any favorites?
@@rustyminer ... I worry more about using any blade for food prep if the coating is changed or removed with hot water. I don't own any Bucks, but the big Bucks have been around for a long time, have a large following and look pretty nice especially for a work knife.
@@rustyminer .... now that would be a great video. You don't usually see coatings listed in a knife's specs. You may get a finishing listed, but I've only seen knife reviewers guess at the coating especially if the blade is also pre-treated to accept the coating better. I've heard "Cerakote", "Diamond Coated" used, but I have 2 Rough Ryders that are "Platium-coated". Obviously, the worse coating is a layer of spray paint.
First! I personally dig a hollow grind. I wouldn't call it a hard use knife but I do think it's a good every day normal user.

Right on Frog. You do you my friend. I know right where my Cold Steel Finn Wolf is and it is my most valuable Cold Steel knife, hands down.😉

I know the Buck Vantage Pro comes in S30V so there is a version with better steel. But I know 420 HC will do just fine with most everyday tasks!
I would LOVY the BOS heat treated S30V!!
You're right though, Buck 420hc has been tested and it's good.
I like it because it's fine edge

What type of coating do you prefer
