I have both S90ES, S90XS and MOTIF XF8.
I bought all of them thru Craigslist and Ebay, with an intention to test all of them for few month, to decide on just ONE to keep.
Here's my decision now.
I sold S90XS already.
I like XF8 but no need to have two 88 keyboards, so I'll be selling that too. Then I'll look for a XF6.
S90ES is a keeper. I keep all my gears in top shape, and I know how to fix keys and electronic boards on Yamaha ES-XS architecture.
It's getting incredibly difficult to find a nice clean used S90ES.... they are being hoarded!!!!
That's funny. I upgraded from a Yamaha PF500 years ago to the Yamaha S90ES, also bought on ebay. I'll never part with the Yamaha S90ES!
Good comparison
The Yamaha S90ES wins hands down for mehere and against all acoustic piano voices delivered with any synth I've heard. The sampling engineers, microphone selection and placement all impact the sound, even more than the newer circuitry. As people get promoted and voices are resampled for next generation models there is much that can change for the better or worse. This proves new is not always better.

The S80 (1999), the S90 (2002) and the S90 ES (2005) all featured a recreation of a Yamaha S700 hand-crafted acoustic grand piano as its principal piano - it, like the Power Grand from the original Motif (2001), quickly became a favorite Voice among musicians. When the Voice architecture of the engine went from 4 Elements (Waveforms) per Voice to 8 Elements (when we transitioned from the ES series to the XS series) new data was created. The additional Elements allowed for more nuance and detail within each Voice... So all new pianos were done (of course, this means some folks would be disappointed because their favorite Voice might not be included in the next model).
We heard much about this at Yamaha... The solution is the Motif-series and it's customizable Wave ROM... A version of the beloved S700 from the S90 ES was created to be loaded into the Motif XS - enhanced to include the extra nuances now available with 8 Elements. The Motif XS had an option to add sample RAM. You had to load your custom data each time you powered up (samples being in volatile memory). The Motif XF takes this customizable Wave ROM to the next logical point where the Flash Board retains your custom Wave data between power cycles. This allows musicians on tour, for example, to simply take their Flash Boards and a USB stick containing their library with them on the road.

I agree with you. The new is not always the best . S90ES uses a waveform of the famous Yamaha piano S700 while S90XS uses a waveform of the floor Yamaha S6 and CFIII but with a sample not as great as in S90ES .

I so agree... It must be the mike placement and other factors that you have described. It's way better sounding than the XS piano sounds but sadly I just could not fit the ES in my car lol... that keyboard has the best piano sound and holds up against most, if not all, keyboards in it's class even in 2016.

Never thought that some Yamaha keyboards are better than Kurzweil keyboards specially S90es, I bought it few month ego and its wonderful for everything, unbelievable that it has everything for Live and Midi Remote also ❤️ + key beds are Amazingly realistic, I have tried every midi keyboard in the past all went to the Garbage
Il natural dell'S90ES è fantastico,l'ho avuta e la conosco molto bene.Ha un suono vellutato dolce e uniforme ma nelle ottave alte peccava un pò di personalità.Il rumore dei martelletti era inesistente.Il piano della nuova S90XS che ho attualmente è diverso ma nella parte centrale e nelle note alte è molto divertente e realistica. Un po plasticosa nella parte bassa ma ho risolto con una emulazione del Natural per i nostalgici dell'S90ES. I suoni rendono molto in LIVE è sono spettacolari.
The S90ES has the best piano sound... PERIOD! Bright, sparkly, full, and dynamic. That keyboard's piano sound still stands the test of time and in my opinion is better than the XS by a mile. Too bad it's about the size of a small boat as otherwise that would be my choice hands down even now in 2016.

You can here the real acustics of the piano with the XS and the wood hitting the strings too the ES is nice to but itsmissing that
@DJEKO707 I agree with you. I must say that the sound of natural s S90ES is very delicate. But I've had all that and two, the sounds from S90XS have on their side more and more nerve realism is on high notes than on low notes.
The sound of hammers, the noise of the issuance of keys is very realistic, which does not exist on S90ES.

The XS sounds like a keyboard trying to sound like a piano, the ES just sounds like a piano. ES for the win.

So why do you think the XS piano sound took such a step back? Did the engineers lose sight of the forest through the trees?? Yes you can load your own samples but really you should't need to pay additional money to make the piano sound as good as the older model.

@@benjahnzit also just comes with more sounds. i have one, imo it can be compared more to a synthesizer than a keyboard try to sound like a piano like the es; they’re very different.

Sono d'accordo con te. Devo dire che il suono natural s della S90ES è molto delicato. Però io che le ho avute tutte e due, anche i suoni dalla S90XS hanno dalla loro parte più nervo e più realismo sia sulle note alte che sulle note basse.
Il suono dei martelletti, il rumore del rilascio dei tasti è molto realistico, cosa che sulla S90ES non esiste.

What's the difference btw S70/90 compared to MOX6/X8? I know both use the Motif XS sounds and are lower end/cheaper

In casa lo amplifico con un impianto Hi-fi con casse di legno.Nei locali una cassa amplificata Ecler Verso 10P. Qualità audio assicurata e il suono del piano risulta corposo, pieno e sopratutto naturale.

The ES sounds brighter...could be an eq issue
Credo che la differenza di suono sia la "pastosità" del suono. la ES è più "metallica" mentre la XS è più " legnosa" ma ugualmente brillante.
Gianluca Farina I think I would be happy with either one of them :) WIsh I knew how they sound compared to the CP4 and P155. I had the CP4 and did not like the sound. To me it was way over sampled...

Al primo impatto confrontando il suono del S90ES potrebbe apparire, più gommoso, meno naturale, ma vi garantisco che usandolo un pò più a fondo, se ne apprezzano le più ampie sfumature timbriche, ottenibili nlle esecuzioni. Io li ho avuti entrambi e dopo un paio di mesi di prove riconosco che la Yamaha con S90XS ha prodotto un bel gioiellino.

Trovo decisamente migliore il piano "natural" dell'S90 Es il discorso sui martelletti acuti secondo me non bilancia la scelta a favore di Xs peraltro molto "copiato" dai piani Roland RD. Uso ancora in concerto (non sempre) S90 es che per certi versi trovo MIGLIORE dell' MP10 KAWAI che alterno in live.Preciso che vengo da studi fatti in Conservatorio su pianoforti acustici coda-gran coda ed il pianoforte è stato il mio studio principale.

the s90es didn't sound better only louder. If you listen at the same volume they sound exactly the same. convert this video to your daw, see the wav image if you don't believe me. the 90es was recorded LOUDER that's why it perceive better but its not.
Thanks for your comment. Actually the sound of the S90ES and S90XS are very different. It's not a recording volume issue. Yamaha used different acoustic pianos when recording Wave. I have both Synths in my studio and I guarantee you that the piano tones are very different.

Everything is subjective. Even your comments on S90ES is rubbish. The Yamaha S90ES is one of the keyboards with the sound better plan and is still used by many professionals Real for its unique sound characteristics derived from the famous Yamaha piano S700. Even in constructive and technological level is a keyboard of high-end. Ymaha S90ES and Nordstage are both excellent keyboards with different sounds and different characteristics. Some I like more and others less.
This why nearly every pro player you see still plays an S90es. I think you posted this comment just for attention. The Nord is great for organ and clav. And in 2020 their piano sounds are stellar. The action however is less playable than the Yamaha action. Chic corea, Jeff lorber, Gino vanelli, and on and on play this Instrument to this day. Yamaha had just the right combination of engineering both mechanical and sonically with the s90es. Pros from 2005 to the present search for this keyboard for its magic. This is not hype, it’s fact. By the way I own a stage 3 and an electro 6 a cp4 a moxf6 and 8. And guess what I go to every time I want to sit and play and feel like I’m being inspired by a piano sound. Yes the S90es is still the king of the go to piano sound. The Rhodes and other “cover tune” sounds are still good to this day. If you come across one buy it. You won’t be disappointed.
