    I think "just in case" is a mindset we inherited from grandparents who lived through the depression and found a use for EVERYTHING we throw away - bottles, broken equipment, etc.... So the mentality was passed down and we hold on to stuff "just in case" like they HAD to.

      I mean that was the case with my mother. She ended up hoarding as she was always worried about throwing something away in case she needed it later and she didn't have the money for it.
      I have that same mentality as her but when I moved out I worked on it and I prefer only having the things I need and a few items I enjoy. I only recently came out of the poverty status to low middle class but I don't think minimalism has anything to do with income status. It depends on the mentality you have as an individual

  • @LukePighetti
    @LukePighetti 4 роки тому +7

    Something I've learned is that minimalism is often a luxury. For the longest time I held onto a bunch of very expensive tools I used for income while I was trying to transition into a new career. I finally landed a job in my new field and it was only after I was financially secure that I felt comfortable removing items from my life. The reason is that I don't feel like I need to fall back on them for income, and I know that I have the cash flow to purchase anything I may need in the future.

    Talk about being minimalists. I told my parents I’m gonna become completely debt free and pay for everything in cash and not do loans again unless maybe a first time home buyer. My parents thought I was absolute crazy and they said that’s all fine and dandy but what you gonna do if something bad happens. I said that’s what the emergency fund is for. Here I am talk to my parents that have loans on everything. $30k camper, $60k truck, $30k car, $230,000 house which is higher paid area would probably go for about $350k. Basically everything they have is under loans. And they act like a credit score is the greatest thing on the earth and you must have it. But I asked why should you keep a credit score if you can save and pay cash for everything? That conversation just mind boggels me. Anyone have any input?

I've even gotten rid of shelves and bookcases by moving most of my media stuff to digital only. Still prefer physical books though. I can relate to Ryan unboxing only part of your stuff and realizing you have all you need to operate. We still have packed up golf clubs that my husband has moved to 2 different countries now, and they are still sitting in the wrapper. Just in case this country has a better golf course than the previous one. Our constant moving put a desire in my heart to be a minimalist of a sort. I am tired of unboxing things that we don't use and organizing all this stuff every day. There is no need for 4 spatulas in one's kitchen when only one is used constantly. Thank you for your message! The piece of advice I would throw out there is look at what things are made of. Are they made of plastic, steel, etc. Is it high quality? Is it used 3-5 times/week? There’s a lot of stuff you hold onto that is just plastic junk. They say the the kitchen is the epitome of the 80/20 rule where you use only 20% of the items in your kitchen 80% of the time. Another one is the closet where you wear 20% of the clothes in the closet 80% of the time. Test yourself and see if it’s true

    One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was getting rid of cable TV. I see far less advertisements than the average American. It gets into people’s psyches in ways that are mostly subconscious & affects behavior. It’s been over 10 years & I don’t miss it.

    I think there is a balance between having certain things "just in case" and having boxes and boxes of things in your basement that you never use.
    For instance, I have a few decorative memorabilia type things that I bought in my youth that I no longer choose to display in my house, but I'm really glad I didn't just throw them out because I think they would be great to pass onto my child. I also save things like gift bags to re-use for gifts. Someone might look at that and call it hording, but it's saving me from buying another gift bag. I also have an extra-large suitcase that I used when I moved cross country. A minimalist would throw this out or try to sell it, but if I just keep it in storage that saves me from buying it again if I ever do need it or if a friend needs it.
    The thing I hate about minimalism is that it encourages people to throw away things en mass. It's good that they then encourage people to not accumulate more things after that, but I don't see a lot of encouragement to re-use/re-purpose the things that we already have.

    I am 31 and I have learned long ago that more stuff does not make you happier. I stay away from debt so that I can save and invest, which allows me to be more generous. In the last few months I have given away hundreds of dollars to help friends and family in some good causes. And I always help locals that I do not personally know as well, because being debt free allows me to. Other then giving and investing I also use my money to spend on creating memories rather then buying more stuff. I do own nice things like lots of guns etc. But they are not the most important things to me.

    • @Bubbasizer
      @Bubbasizer 6 років тому +4

      Andrew Essence I will just say I wish I made 70k a year. The key to getting ahead for me is to stay away from debt. I paid my house off almost 2 years ago and after that I didn't take on any more debt and started investing in the stock market like crazy. I bought a very cheap house that needed a lot of work but my dad and I fixed it up and basically doubled it's value. I have a buddy who makes like 75% more money then I do and he is always broke and doesn't own any assets because of his choices. Making more money helps as long as you do financially responsible things with it. Also my monthly bills are a little more then a fourth of what I make a month. Then I use the rest of my money to have fun, invest, save, and give.

    The closest I came to minimalism is when I moved back home from a 2 bedroom town-home I was renting. I got tired of living paycheck to paycheck and not being able to save money. I have stuff I haven't used in years but want to keep for those every blue moon times I do use them. I never bought things I didn't need but I did use credit cards for dining out and such. Now that I paid off the cards and loans I'll never go back to using them. I either pay cash for what I NEED or do without it.
