The night before my Summer exams one year I stayed all night typing godawful essays, because I’d been depressed and kept putting them off until it was almost too late. The next morning, I knew I had failed my exams before they even started. In a panic, I decided to stick on some ambient music to at least watch the sun come up. I was overtired and desperate, but this soothing piece of music helped me to get my head together, and I went in to do my exams. It was one of the worst days of my life, but I’ll never forget how much this music helped me to get through it.
I'm sorry to hear about that. College or school in general can be so draining on every level I really do understand. But I'm glad you were able to find a refuge in this beautiful music. Hope you're doing well.
man this video captures the vibe of this song perfectly. its like youre on the brink of death, or already past death and into the afterlife, and youre exhausted and stranded. and the lines between reality and hallucination start to blur, and you begin to dream about things that emulate your confusion. but there's no telling whether what youre experiencing is real or not anymore, and now all theres left to do is reminisce on the life you used to live. because the future, and time itself, is no more. theres just an abyss. i can imagine this scene with this boat flowing in slow motion with faceless figures serving as a purgatory in a movie. like your life has just ended, but youre not aware of that, and now youre spit into this alternate world lacking real humanity. there's a task at hand, one that seems like it's in service of survival, but there is no surviving to be done.
Exactly. To me the whole album is musis for walking through mysterious wintery landscape. :-) Probably even in the night with stars shining above my head, -20 degrees....
The first time I was on a ferry boat it was 10 at night in Seattle Washington and I was listening to this on my iPod Nano... it was honestly one of the best experiences I've had on my trip there, which is the only time I've been to Washington.
2:50 That cut-scene really does it for me. I am now baffled at how large the ocean really is. Just think, the vast volumes of water, trillions of trillions of trillions of molecules. These liquid bodies harness life, and are made kinetic by various acts of gravity and vibration. Beautiful song.
@Ali Rashid Abdullah Have you listened to his album "The Hilvarenbeek Recordings" yet? Not entirely music but it's still that home-y calming type of sheit
I felt asleep to this song and had an lucid dream. I was on a beach... in space watching stars. It always wonder how many other people have similar connotations.
The first time I'd ever heard this song was a year ago, almost to the day. I'd planned a trip to my subconscious and picked a playlist that this track happened to be on. I listened to it on repeat for a good majority of my trip, and the journey took me to the depths of the ocean - a place I personally find terrifying. I found myself lying on the ocean floor, tucked in the ruins of a shipwreck, looking up towards the light, and thinking "I'm safe here", which I then thought strange because as I said, I am terrified of the ocean. Ocean life swam and scuttled about around me, kelp and other ocean plants undulating with the barely perceptible movement of the water, and I sat, motionless, on the ocean floor, finally at peace. It was an amazing and humbling experience, and I'm even more mystified after having watched the video for the first time today as i prepare for another journey accompanied by this song...only to realize that it was about the ocean all along.
what an interesting take on what this song is conveying: the struggle between the gentle but powerful force of nature and the persistent drive of life with its vulnerabilities and necessary sharp edges.
Every depressive period for 10 years now according to my playlits, I keep returning to biosphere. It makes feeling lonely and broken a bit more deep. A soundtrack to the pain.
i was in a merchant navy and i remember in 2001 i had Substrata, Microgravity and Patashnik onboard. I used to sit on a bow after work for hours, sometimes in the middle of the night with ALL visible stars, listening to this music on my earphones while the ship was cutting the ocean....amazing memories!!!!
I always see like... quiet panoramas of ice-swept canyons, the tundra... vegetation... modern-age mongolians living in the steppes... falcons... It's so evocative... This music is such a treat. (I agree the music video is very beautiful and fitting though).
Deep... depressing... soundful... melancholic... timeless... taking a bath with a glass of wine and listening to this track just takes your sorrows away...
Wow. I heard this song on my ex-friends crappy car stereo 15 years ago (!) and I thought it was good. Later I found this cd( "Substrata") in a catalog and ordered it. The whole CD blew me away! Not any bad song! And this video, made by concretecorner is very good! Thank you!
this track draws some images of a cold frozen wasteland somewhere near the North Pole.. I picture myself staying on the researchers ship and watching an iceberg falling apart on several pieces.. what a majestic image
For some reason this song started playing in my head one day. I heard it a few times in the past but I didn't know who it was by. I just know I HAD to find it again. It's so bloody hauntingly beautiful. It's like poetry from the universe. You guys might like my liminal spaces album. It's this type of vibe :)
I thought about barren arctic landscapes with snowy wind soaring over the ice while a lonely grass is shaken by the wind, barely resisting the strength of it. But I guess this works too
Been listening to this album for 20 years and I have never seen this video before. Fits perfectly. Would have been nice if the boats were not military, though, but (Norwegian) fishing vessels. :-)
sorry for not meeting your expectations , anything else? maybe more reverb? or what about throwing some latin beats in the middle of the song as we offer you some popcorn made out of some organic element unheard to us humans .....
This is so amazing. Awesome video. Beautiful music. Biosphere is totally incredible. I listen to this song with the volume turned up and I close my eyes and the music engulfs me with waves of powerful positive motivation. Breathtaking and outstanding.
i always imagined this album as like a group of people stuck in the north pole trying to get themselves out of there and in this song’s context they’re watching the aurora lights. in the more scary sounding times of the album i’ve imagined they trying to sneak past like idk a polar bear
Oceano Nox... Oh ! combien de marins, combien de capitaines Qui sont partis joyeux pour des courses lointaines, Dans ce morne horizon se sont évanouis ! ............... This works brilliantly well. I always thought of mountains, but the images fit. I suppose the waves are mountains in a way.

Exactly. To me the whole album is musis for walking through mysterious wintery landscape. :-) Probably even in the night with stars shining above my head, -20 degrees....

me too, this track makes me think of mountains and tectonic plates but i had footage with not them, but with ocean and a ship, so....

When I listen to this, I imagine a dark, dream like world. Or space. It's kind of calming yet unsettling at the same time.

I never had a thought of ships and ocean and waves through the millions of times of listening to this track but this is awesome!
me neither, i didnt think of ships or seas while listening to this great track, but by chance i discovered they go well together. :P
i was thinking of another movie for loscil-vapour, then i thought oh maybe this video will go good, with poa alpina.

I'd like an hour-long version of this à la William Basinski. Feels like sitting at the bottom of a deep, dark well. In a good way.
You're right. This really does sound like it could be a part of the Disintegration Loops. Maybe someone will do such a remix of it. :D
You know it's a good ambient song when you can listen it for hours and at some point even forget about it being on.
i was lost in the depths but this eased my mind on journey, I now understand it and I am flowing. Music is so powerful
