Shorikai, Genesis Engine | Combo / Voltron - The Brewery [S08E01]

- There're definitely tons of different ways you can brew around this commander. Your limit is definitely your imagination. That being said, while I focused more heavily on combo and voltron aspects, there's some control, token strategies, and reanimation peppered through the deck. Hopefully all of these routes give you some ideas on what to do with your own build.

I like that every video I see about Shorikai presents a completely different approach on him. Also it is good that we can change cards and rebalance the power of the deck, according to our opponents.
Very true! It's definitely a very versatile commander.
Really loving your take on this commander, since it's so open ended! Fantastic as always!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Very awesome content! Thanks for helping me building my Shorikai
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Great content! I’m tuning a budget list, that’s running the best of (budget) reanimate targets as well as a couple of the best vehicles, and a combo (iso rev) finish.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Nice! A vehicle route is definitely a good way to build it considering Shorikai is popping out pilots, after all :P
Muy buen deck, unas cuantas cartas y lo completo!
¡Gracias! ¡Éxito montándolo!
Tolarian Kraken needs to have Shorikai crewed first before it will work didn't notice you mentioning this in the video. Good video.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I do mention that Shorikai has to be crewed in order for Intruder Alarm to work. Since Tolarian Kraken has a similar effect, it follows that Shorikai would still have to be crewed for it as well.
Really cool take on the deck, thanks for the video.
Just a note : I like Emeria, the sky ruin but it seems a bit hard to make use of with this mana base though !
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
With the amount of fetchlands and dual-typed lands in the deck, getting Emeria online hasn't been an issue. It's more unlikely to actually draw into Emeria than it is to have all the plains needed when you do.
I'm glad this deck isn't just another Oracle win. Love the versatility here!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Yeah, you can only witness so many Thoracle wins before you get super bored of them.
@@TheCommanderTavern The version I'm building uses like seven different alt wins, including Approach of the Second Sun, Mechanized Production, Triskaidekaphile, and Mirrodin Besieged. My opponents usually prepare for Thoracle win against Shorikai and were often unprepared for others.
@@Cyberium Yup! That was my experience as well. The wincons that occur from simply drawing into my deck were already on the battlefield. So it was a matter of drawing while everyone was tapped out, had no interaction, or I had enough interaction of my own to protect the combo. But the deck can even win via "slow burn" with the engine pieces even if you're not going infinite. I probably like it more this way as well.
@@TheCommanderTavern What do you think of Niambi here? She's a discard/draw 2 outlet and can preserve important legends.
@@Cyberium That is a possibility. I was considering similar shells when brewing Shorikai so including Niambi wouldn't be that far off.
So mana dork creature, intruder alarm and Shorikai, you run elixir of immortality and spellbook. Win con is you have alter of the brood. Infinite draw until you can mill your opponent out
Nice combo! That's definitely a great way to go with Shorikai!
I used it and thanks for all the great ideas but I think that its better to make the combo with Dramatic Reversal and Isochron you can use it with less mana cost and you dont have to crew, also being a creature is more prone to removal
Oh, definitely. I just wanted to do something different with Shorikai since over 95% of the builds I've been seeing others do is just pure combo with stax, since it's a noncreature commander.
So great video. Really love what’s going on here. But I have a question, would you consider building this deck without infinite combos? Maybe I’m one of the lame few that really hates infinite combos either for mana, or token creation or whatever it may be. How would you build this deck without infinite triggers? What would you take out and put in its place instead? Anyways, great work in the video. Very well presented. Cheers to friend
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I get it, everyone has their own playstyle they prefer. I'm not really against any strategy because the game lends itself to so many things.
That being said, I'd have to go back to the list to see if I can make it not a combo deck. You do have the option to not go infinite with the pieces it already has since some of these are already good on their own. But I can still check to see if there's anything that can be swapped in for those few cards included solely for the combo potential.
@@TheCommanderTavern hey thanks for the reply! You are 100% correct there are so many things you can do and decks that can be built it probably doesn’t matter. It’s really just a house rule in my play group really. I don’t expect anyone to make an entire video around a small rule like that lol. Just curious what you would swap out and put in instead. Cheers!
If you wanna run tolarian kraken, palladium myr is a good substitute for ashnods alter
Ooh! That's an interesting interaction!
I play shorikai so classically boring, azorious control/stax. This video makes me wanna rebuild
Awesome! Glad it was helpful :)
Excelente
¡Gracias!
Would you be interested in a stax build of Shorikai built around Humility rather than Intruder Alarm?
I did originally consider a stax build since that way it's much easier to protect the combo since you're controlling the table until you do. But since I already did that with my Tameshi deck, I didn't want another Neon Dynasty WU commander doing the same thing.
That being said, Shorikai is an amazing commander for that since it isn't a creature. I did something similar in my Oloro, Ageless Ascetic build since there aren't any creatures in it. It doesn't really need any since Oloro's already doing his thing from the command zone.
I stax it myself, mostly pillow fort style with rhystic and remora to ramp up the draw. It becomes a stomper. Been considering swapping the deck in with some obscura for a queza build though in the time since
You can't untap Shorikai unless it is crewed.
For Intruder Alarm? Yes. For other untap effects that don't care if it's a creature? No.
No counters??
Um, the deck currently has 6 counterspells in it...?
can I use it in a duel commander? 1v1
Shorikai isn't banned in duel commander (that I know of). You would have to remove all of the cards that are banned, though (pretty sure Sol Ring is banned in duel commander).
