What has always amazed me about this arrangement is that Chance and Rob have very distinct different voices. But when they join together their voices sound exactly the same.

Thank you, Sir! I've been waiting for this one! Your reaction was worth watching over again. I'm so glad you enjoyed this amazing song, both the original and HF's version. I loved CSN's harmonies back in their day. This is my absolute favorite HF cover. Again, thanks for your superb analysis.
Rob Lundquist and Austin Brown singing Nessun Dorma. As a classical musician I believe you will enjoy this, Rob will steal your breath. I am not a singer, writer, musician or anything else tied to a music career but I love reactions because music feeds the SOUL! Facial expressions tell it all! Whether it has been heard before while advertising it's the first time, or that it is great when they could care less, a little more coin in their pocket. Your reactions tell truth! Haven't researched you but I would think you would know who Josh Groban and Dimash are. THANK YOU for this reaction! ❤❤❤❤
In the Middle Ages, a masterpiece was the work submitted by someone seeking admission to a guild. This piece is HF's masterpiece. It is an extreme exhibition of their extraordinary expertise.
Chance directed this one (as well as "I Can't Outrun You"). It's a master class in acapella - no beatboxing, just wonderful singing & harmonies. Thanks for playing this & your insights!
The precision of breathing in sync, the lockstep of going from unison, to harmony, back to unison, to harmony, the arrangement where several points the baseline hangs on to notes for extended time while the other parts are coming in stages is so incredible, it just like having the most exquisite high end sweets you can buy. The ear candy this presentation provides is so remarkable that I can not think of another to compare it to. The vast array of genres this group presents at the quality they represent is unparalleled in my opinion. ❣ Subscribed - a Home Fry
Masterpiece ❤ Home Free just released a new fun video called Jump Right In ( Zac Brown cover) Adam Chance also released a new video called Mrs Potters Lullaby ( Counting Crows cover )
If you enjoyed this, you'll definitely enjoy their cover of Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms". Tim stayed pretty close to Tuukka's Club For Five arrangement, so Tuukka should definitely get some credit. Home Free's recording tho, is #Transcendent imho.... deeply haunting. If you're not impressed, I'lll give you your money back myself!! ;)
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score - at Wacken 2013. I am 72 and not a metal band listener at all, but this floored me (hee hee). Love it. Oh, they're symphonic metal.
I think you would love any song on the album Beautiful Duets with Tim Foust and Peter Hollens. Every song is beautifully done with perfect harmonies and backed by their own voices layered many times. ❤
AMAZING PRECISION!! An exquisite 5-part harmony masterpiece!!! Besides the unbelievable harmonies, getting to hear Adam Rupp's sweet tenor actually singing is such a great treat ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ #HomeFree
Home Free has one unmatched talent in all the music they cover..they respect the music they cover so deeply, but at the same time they manage to recreate the soul of the music in new ways... really appreciated how you called out the power of the silences to compliment the music... great reaction!!
I also think you'd really like "Black Is the Color Of My True Love's Hair" by Avi Kaplan and Peter Hollens, which also has a very similar mood and feeling to this.
Loved your reaction. Thanks for giving us 'technical' information in such an easy to understand manner. I learn a lot listening to your reactions. The expressions on your face as you are watching are amazing. Thisvis one of my HF favourites.💕

CSN zooms be back to my childhood, it was my oldest brothers music and it reminds me of all of the times our parents made him take me with him, yes even on dates. 😂 I love CSN and I love Home Free’s version of their song. Thanks SH! T ✌🏻

My favorite, well tied to What we ain't got, but love this one! The only thing I would change is to make this ten minutes longer! Your insights are always thoughtful and helpful.
Brother, love your thorough & in depth analysis as always. Another one i think you enjoy musically & videographically is one that Adam Chance directed, and sings lead in, it's called "I can't outrun you" its a beautiful cover. Please if you can i the Home Fries and others will really enjoy your breakdown of the composition, and you'll have a chance to really disect a song led by Chance and his directìon too (he's multitalented)
This is one of my favorite Home Free songs. I find it almost haunting in its simplicity, and yet still be complex. Yes, more Home Free, please! How about one of the "funny" videos? You will get a good laugh and still be amazed at how much the guys can do! I suggest the Butts Medley! Please? It's SO much fun!! Peace and love from Kentucky
One of my favorites of theirs. This was Chance’s baby. I know he directed it and filmed it in black & white. He might have arranged it too but not sure. Good reaction SH! 😍😄
Maybe it's no big deal to you singer-folk, but I am gobsmacked by how they can sync together by stepping into a note together, and then step off together, all with no external beat to rely on for sync. It's normal to hear voices singing together being maybe a few microseconds off on the start of a phrase. But Home Free is dead on each time. It amazes me.
I grew up listening to Crosby, Stills & Nash & had their album with this song Helplessly Hoping. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. This song is full of alliterations. Home Free more than does justice to all the songs they cover. And this song is perfection to me with the 5 part harmonies. A true masterpiece! I can't say enough about how great these guys are & humble while still staying respectful to the original song.
I get chills and tears from this one every time! I think this is my favorite of theirs. It's so haunting. These harmonies! I like how you described the feeling of vulnerability they create here. I love the tension that that brings. They are tasked to being perfect in timing and tone. They accomplish that so well. Demonstrating their vocal excellence. This is a true test of A Capella skill and talent! I'm so glad that this was the winner tonight. You describe how their choices affect us emotionally. I never had words for that, but you're absolutely correct in the words you choose. Many thanks to you!
Your channel is the BEST ON YOU TUBE - the graphics, explanations and observations lend great interest and knowledge to the Singer, songwriter or musician ! Thanks. GBjj
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been anxiously awaiting your reaction to my all time Home Free rendition! Another marvelous informative reaction. Like Home Free you never disappoint.
I love your reactions. I've watched a lot of other channels and had to abandon many of them after the first 2 sentences that came out of the reactor's mouth (if they could even qualify as sentences). You are very intelligent, knowledgeable and articulate. Also, you obviously have a great passion for what you do. Please, continue with your great choices and let us enjoy and learn.❤
This is my very favorite by Home Free because of the perfection of harmony! Wings of Pegasus showed pitch correction on a Home Free song, comparing the studio and live performances, with the live performance better in my opinion. Just makes you wonder if this perfect harmony was fixed. Still love this version of the song best.
CSN 1969 is one of those truly stunning albums, where every track counts (Ziggy Stardust is another). I’m 60, so it takes me back to that era. The opening notes of Wooden Ships does it to me every time. Hendrix famously referred to CSN as “Western Sky Music” - which, if you’ve been to the American West and experienced that incomparable blue sky in Santa Fe or Arizona or everywhere else with those open vistas, you know what he’s talking about. Helplessly Hoping is my fave by a hair over Wooden Ships. But I’d love to hear your take on Guinnevere. I was turned onto it by a prof in college. He and a friend couldn’t quite figure out the tuning of it (this back when you only had an LP and a turn-table). They caught a concert from CSN, and just before launching into Guinnevere Crosby tuned the guitar to the alternate tuning, plucked each string. The prof and his friend said they “got it!” - the key to the song being the alt tuning. Musicians can do that. I can’t. I’m a writer who loves music, but musicians can pick out tunings and notes and chords natively in a way I’m just jealous of.
I am so happy I found you. I am a seasoned Home Fry. Your analysis is brilliant and I cannot wait to hear more! I have always said this is simply a masterpiece and an entire class can be taught on this perfomance.
Brilliant - the song arrangement and the analysis! : ) It's so good and enjoyable (both even). HF makes ya wonder how. Who's doing what and when or who is moving together and/or separately, I gave up on. I remain amazed though! : ) These guys are very unique; they can be very distinct and so similar --- nearly anywhere! A blend that is very rare. --- I just stay blown away by these guys!!! LOL --- And I refuse to stop!!! : ) Be Safe
This is one of the my favorite covers from Home Free. I still get chills sometimes in certain parts. It’s a beautiful video and those harmonies, and the unison is excellent! Love your analysis and breakdown. It’s a phenomenal cover that was suggested by Chance to the group. This is right in his wheelhouse, but glad he suggested Home Free to do it as a group. I love when Home Free goes outside the box. I concur with another commentor above/below regarding the suggestion of Home Free’s cover of Dire Strait’s “Brothers In Arms”. I didn’t think they could surpass “Helplessly Hoping”, but they did with the CSN cover!
I’m so glad that you finally got to this one. I felt that it would be a good one to pick apart in comparison to the original. From the first time I heard it, I felt that there was a bit of magic happening. I’m certain that when they are looking for a high tenor, that he will be as in tune as Austin. That would show how successful they are as a unit. Thanks so much for this reaction and analysis. You’re amazing! ❤ Cyd
Rob is my "favorite" member of Home Free (as if that were possible), but I can't express the joy I felt when I first heard this and CHANCE went first. Then, there's the unusual treat of Adam singing. This song is magic in itself, but there's wizardry (think Gandalf, not Harry Potter) in the Home Free version.
The prevalence of autotune is so maddening. These guys dont need it, but it appears to be applied anyway by the recording engineers nowadays. This is why I love the off mic performance these guys did at the Ryman auditorium. It was captured by fancam so you can hear how they sound without studio enhancements.
CSN sang this as a folk song; HF sang it as art. (Both ways are correct.) Another reactor pointed out how HF sang and stood (couple of different hand/ arm positions) contributed to the song's relationship uncertainty meaning. As always, I enjoyed your analysis.
I enjoyed this.. and it reminded me of how long it’s been since I’ve revisited Crosby, Stills & Nash (& sometimes Young), their harmonies were always something special.. might be reconsidering my cooking music choice later this afternoon 🎶🌟
@@itzel1735 They do have so very many songs that never get old (unlike me! Ha) I did end up starting my cooking with my original plan, the score for the movie ‘Last of the Mohicans’, but then finished up with CS&N ‘greatest hits’ long enough to revel in Southern Cross, Helplessly Hoping, and a few more. Then supper caught fire under the broiler as I was reviewing the upcoming songs on the list🔥New kitchen rule, no music while using the broiler!
Lovely analysis! You should check out their cover of (Dire Straights) Brothers in Arms. So powerful! Also Austin singing solo covering Bring Him Home (from Les Misérables). It makes me cry every single time I hear it.
Mm, yeah, I knew you'd like this one. In a similar vein to me is "I Can't Outrun You", also featuring Chance with the melody, and with a _stunning_ bass note at the end, and an incredible music video.
There is a recording of the band singing this live off-mic, which really shows up the vulnerability and the power of silences. As if to respond to those who doubt their ability, these wonderful men produce the same tightness and magical feel as this studio recording. The only slight difference is that Tim counts off the timing of the final chords with his fingers.
It was interesting when they did this. They have done a couple of folk songs from the same time period including Travelin' Soldier Crosby, Stiles, Nash and (sometimes) Young was a marvelous super group for harmony. Totally part of the history of folk music during its ascendancy in the 1960s-70s. They have one very amazing song that was written in an afternoon by Nash and recorded that same week "Ohio".
How did I miss this? My older sister had the album, and this was my favorite song on it. Home Free does it justice, but the original will always be my favorite for nostalgic reasons. My sister and I used to love playing this song and finding a part to sing within it. ❤A/R🎼
Oh to hear this Live and in a chapel with great acoustics! One of my best memories is singing in a small chapel outside of Jerusalem …..Road to Emmaus! Gorgeous! Question #9 were you in an opera group in France?
Didn't decide if I like this, it's almost like chirch singing (which I do like). But bass joining made me grin for a second, felt like a suddenly droped down glass. And there is something unfinished about the whole thing, as if it's to be continued. For me his voice is more suitable for balladian singing than for background of tenors. Otherwise he feels like a rock thrown into sky, not at his place)) and yes, I've found his name, Tim, is it? Geoff is better.
You mentioned Autotune at one point. Well, it might not surprise you then, that Home Free indeed do use pitch correction software for their studio recordings.
@@itzel1735 Sure. But I think a lot of people imagine it's much less common than it is. Or at least they hope so... at least for the artists they like to listen to.
Hey @@olabergvall3154 , as Itzel mentioned, I also assume that most artists use some form of audio enhancement in their studio versions. And I don't mind at all, as long as it's not used everywhere and completely transforms the performance. I choose not to mention it because my focus is on the music of the studio recordings, which is the same at core regardless of whether or not some enhancements are made here and there No decision by an artist will satisfy everyone If they perform live, people will question why the performance isn't perfect; if it's a studio version, people will question why it sounds different to the same live performance We know HF can perform live, and as far as acapella groups go (from what I've seen), HF are up there with the best intonation live. I was especially impressed with their Sing Off performances And I've seen a number of comments mention certain other content creators checking music for pitch correction/auto-tune. I've not checked these videos out so if they do mention this then obviously ignore, but people are capable of singing 'perfectly' in tune without the use of pitch correction. It's what elevates such artists above others (context-dependant, such as acapella). It seems that with the current online-musician pitch correction pandemic, many people are forgetting this From some of the comments I'm seeing, it also seems that if a group sings perfectly in tune (such as creating overtones through perfectly-aligned frequencies), it will be assumed that this is unnatural
@@SirHairless Very true. They do use it, as demonstrated by Fil from Wings of Pegasus, and probably others. But then so does everyone else, I'm not judging them for it. As for live performances, I was fortunate enough to catch them live in my home town of Stockholm, Sweden, last year. They were fantastic, and to my untrained ear they would be in no need of any pitch correction enhancement on a studio recording. But: This is a choice one makes, quite often not because singers are not capable enough, but because it's the thing to do. I certainly wouldn't be able to pick it out in a recording, other than in extreme cases. Fil reckons it ruins the feel of the performance, and while I will not contradict that, to me it makes virtually no difference. I am not a music producer, and my senses are accustomed to what recorded music sounds like today, for better or for worse 🌷 Finally, to add out of context - thanks for making these videos! Thoroughly enjoyable and educational. Great stuff, I hope you will keep it up for many many songs to come 😊👍👍
Great reaction! I love Home Free, but whoever mixed this particular song, in my opinion, went a little heavy on the pitch correct. We all know the guys can and do hit any note and are on pitch, why the pitch correct at all? I just get a lot of robot voice in the sustains and it's all I can hear in this one. Not my favorite by them, great arrangement...I just don't like the mix. And as always Rob is the man! I think How Great Thou Art is a much better mix
I hear ya re: the sustains. To me, when there is pitch correction it sounds "metallic" to me, almost screetchy. EDIT: I hadn't noticed it before until I was listening to this analysis and was struck a bit by the sound on one of their sustained notes as you mentioned. I have been learning about auto-tuning & pitch correction the last several months. I have come to realize why I can't listen to a lot of singers today and it is because of the auto-tune/pitch correction. They even did it to Carrie Underwood for heaven's sake.
Check out this reaction next 🎶 ua-cam.com/video/v9aYVNHvOj4/v-deo.html
I love how they can strip everything down to practically nothing and still have us captivated. This arrangement is a true masterpiece, in my opinion.

Love your analyses of the songs you review. As usual, insightful and precise, whilst showing great respect for the artists.
Yes, beautiful!
I understand that this was chances baby, totally heavenly
Chance's suggestion, Chance's direction of the video (superb) and Tim's arrangement I believe?
The prevalence of autotune is so maddening. These guys dont need it, but it appears to be applied anyway by the recording engineers nowadays. This is why I love the off mic performance these guys did at the Ryman auditorium. It was captured by fancam so you can hear how they sound without studio enhancements.
I appreciate how you find the beauty and mastery is a "simple" performance. (and if you buy "simple" I have got a bridge I'll see ya)
I can listen to “Just a Song” and “Southern Cross” anytime, and over and over. 😁
The cooking music choice is a very important one indeed
@@SirHairless To see how that turned out 🔥 see my reply to itzel..
@@shelleyo I can set stuff on fire while I’m cooking, with OR without music. Hope everything was ok.
Lovely analysis! You should check out their cover of (Dire Straights) Brothers in Arms. So powerful! Also Austin singing solo covering Bring Him Home (from Les Misérables). It makes me cry every single time I hear it.
An informed explanation of music is always welcome to me. Subbed.
Thank you and welcome 🙏🏽
Mm, yeah, I knew you'd like this one.
In a similar vein to me is "I Can't Outrun You", also featuring Chance with the melody, and with a _stunning_ bass note at the end, and an incredible music video.
There is a recording of the band singing this live off-mic, which really shows up the vulnerability and the power of silences. As if to respond to those who doubt their ability, these wonderful men produce the same tightness and magical feel as this studio recording. The only slight difference is that Tim counts off the timing of the final chords with his fingers.
As always great reaction analysis.
Brilliant review. You are very good.
Been waiting for you to do this ❤
It was interesting when they did this. They have done a couple of folk songs from the same time period including Travelin' Soldier
Crosby, Stiles, Nash and (sometimes) Young was a marvelous super group for harmony.
❤A/R🎼
Love this cover by Home Fee!
One of my favorites of theirs❤
I was around for the original and never cared for the song. This is, as the Pentaholics would say, a definite upgrade. Great analysis, too.
Sometimes, less is more!
Absolutely love this song. 💗💗💗
Wonderful!
Again great reaction and analysis. Love how they can make such beautiful sounds together it’s amazing.
Home Free is the best to sing this song. Chance did a great job to start this song. Rob did a great job. Austin and Tim came Adam.
To hear HomeFree sing this live ua-cam.com/video/xwVzFVLN5jw/v-deo.html
If you liked this you should listen to I can’t out run you
Oh to hear this Live and in a chapel with great acoustics! One of my best memories is singing in a small chapel outside of Jerusalem …..Road to Emmaus! Gorgeous!
Question #9 were you in an opera group in France?
To your question: negative
😊
Didn't decide if I like this, it's almost like chirch singing (which I do like). But bass joining made me grin for a second, felt like a suddenly droped down glass. And there is something unfinished about the whole thing, as if it's to be continued. For me his voice is more suitable for balladian singing than for background of tenors. Otherwise he feels like a rock thrown into sky, not at his place)) and yes, I've found his name, Tim, is it? Geoff is better.
I just don't want to find out if there was auto tuning. They're plenty good enough without it.
You mentioned Autotune at one point. Well, it might not surprise you then, that Home Free indeed do use pitch correction software for their studio recordings.
Who doesn’t? 🤷🏻♀️
@@itzel1735 Sure. But I think a lot of people imagine it's much less common than it is. Or at least they hope so... at least for the artists they like to listen to.
@@olabergvall3154 Fair point
Hey @@olabergvall3154 , as Itzel mentioned, I also assume that most artists use some form of audio enhancement in their studio versions. And I don't mind at all, as long as it's not used everywhere and completely transforms the performance. I choose not to mention it because my focus is on the music of the studio recordings, which is the same at core regardless of whether or not some enhancements are made here and there
No decision by an artist will satisfy everyone If they perform live, people will question why the performance isn't perfect; if it's a studio version, people will question why it sounds different to the same live performance
We know HF can perform live, and as far as acapella groups go (from what I've seen), HF are up there with the best intonation live. I was especially impressed with their Sing Off performances
And I've seen a number of comments mention certain other content creators checking music for pitch correction/auto-tune.
I am not a music producer, and my senses are accustomed to what recorded music sounds like today, for better or for worse 🌷
Finally, to add out of context - thanks for making these videos!
5 voices+close harmonies=shivers up the spine. Once again, great analysis.
