Escort missions suck because you're literally having to babysit an NPC who makes unpredictable bad decisions. An otherwise tough battle quickly becomes extremely difficult simply because of the bad decisions of the NPC.
The most painful part of any escort mission is the slower NPC speed compared to the player, resulting in this annoying back and forth dance to simply escort someone.
If you get too far they stop until you get back in proximity.
What is the golden quote? " If the NPC is faster than your walking speed but slower than your running speed then you shouldn't be allowed to make games."
I think that's it anyway, I tried my best.

My immersion was lost seeing the mandalorian walking at the same speed as the droid. The NPCs are supposed to always be faster than your walking speed and slower than your running speed!
Well in Hitman they are slower than your walking speed
using a joystick you push slighly the lever and you can get a similar speed lol

Bruh for real tho
there is a simple reason: you are supposed to be explore your surroundings during the walk, as walking right next to the NPC is simply boring. But if they make them you walking speed it is just wayy to slow. If they make them your running speed, you make one single small detour and you will never ever catch up. Depending on the situation, both can be done, but usually neither one is a good option.
@@fIayffnah usual games have a solution for this. U move 2 meters from the escort and you are already "Too far away" and they completely stop moving. And that's just fucking annoying.
@@fIayffor you can just make the NPC run when they are far from your position to catch up with you, also make them stand still, possibly adding some lines like "what are you waiting for" for the immersion when you are behind their back for whatever reason
which is done by design every time.
Always bring your high level gear, even for a seemingly easy Job/Quest.
Not if you can lose your gear, like in Escape From Tarkov

It doesn't help that the person you're "protecting" walks into enemy fire constantly, and can only take 3 hits till you have to restart the mission.
How else is he supposed to attack with his pizza cutter?
R2D2 did this in the movies plenty of times. He just waltzed across a hallway as bolts flew in every direction. To be fair the dude knew he had thicc plot armor, so it didn't matter. That plus the plot accuracy debuff storm troopers had guaranteed that only plot could make him take a hit.
@@stratometal I mean, he was (as far as the enemy were aware) a harmless droid. Imagine you're in a firefight, who are you going to target: the people with guns shooting at you, or the random, harmless droid wandering around? Also, he's short enough that he wouldn't get in the way as long nobody RADICALLY missed a shot.
I'm not saying it's not a bit silly (it is), just that it isn't entirely nonsensical either.
i mean, how many hits from blasters can YOU take eh? eh? ... thought so!
Knowing it autosaves after mission complete, I relish in the subsequent assassination I commit on my escortee for all the bs it put me through.
It's even worse when doing that locks you out of Items that are Unique though 💀

Yup, that's how it usually goes. But at least the droid moved at walking pace, most usually move at the in between pace that is impossible to match so it's just awkwardly running ahead before waiting for the escort to catch up.
Also, always bring high level gear, regardless of carry weight or ammunition, just im case something like this happens.
One of the best NPC escort missions in any game was one in The Secret World, where the NPC keeps up and can't die and contributes competently to the battle -- but the challenge is that her contribution comes in the form of an AoE (with a long charge time) that can kill you along with the enemies if you don't protect yourself.
Can we just appreciate the transition star wars style at 0:18 because that was cool dude. He is a man of culture.

Plot twist: the droid is the player who hired an NPC for this exact battle
plot twist: Those specific drones were reverse engineered by stormtroopers.
In Warframe, there is an escort mission on the Plains of Eidolon - large open world area on Earth. The escorted drone is not badly slow, but, well, it is kinda slow, and you usually have to escort it like 1000-2000 meters through hills, caverns, lakes, rocks... While defending it from waves of enemies.
Luckily, you can use a frame with a speed buff, so the drone flies forward faster than the enemies arrive... or you can use a frame with a switch teleport ability - to swap places with the drone for like 500m at a time.
I wish more escort missions in the games were like those...

This skit reminds me of a level from Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (A great game from 2002).
The droid had to be escorted across what was basically an outer walkway turned shooting range and the droid would slowly roll head first into trip mines places across the walkway.
I remember the game fondly but that was a particularly frustrating section. Especially on the higher difficulties because you had to balance running ahead to blow up the mines for the droid while not getting shot and then shoot all of the enemies before they destroyed the droid.
Great video that reminded me of many mission failures due to an exploding droid. 😂
I remember playing both Jedi Knight-games as a kid, but I don't remember that mission. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is more burned into my brain :p
I never got why people you escort in games have no form of self defense. Sure we were hired for that, but realism was thrown out of the window by being ambushed in every single one of them.

@@teodoreberbach3651 Exosuit doesn't save you from mutants or anomalys (most of the time anyways). I figure most of these "escort" quests are not really an escort, they are just looking for a tour guide (i think it even says so in the quest descriptions) to get to places faster since there isn't exactly a google maps thing to avoid anomalys and mutant packs

Oh God, you did have to escort a droid in that one Tatooine Jedi Academy mission.
Missed the part of the NPC then zipping across the zone to fight a mob on the other side of the continent, allowing the enemies you had to blow cooldowns for to respawn.
Oh no, it's much worse when the NPC pops out some kind of AOE weapon with friendly fire enabled.
This was my first experience with an escort mission in Morrowind: "Look! A rat! Kill it with explosive fireballs!"

Only part missing is the NPC being near suicidal and rushing headlong into the enemy oblivious to danger and "Mission failed, you forgot to protect the primary!" warnings blaring as your primary decides to swan dive onto the bad guys weaponry or projectiles.

My favorite part of escort missions is when the NPC says "Hold on, I have to do a critical task here, please protect me!" before proceeding to take forever to open a door, lower a bridge, or perform some other menial task.... all while you proceed to reduce the enemy's payroll by twenty to thirty percent.
Then it's "Hey we have to get moving, hurry up, are you going to just stand there all day?"

The best kind of NPC escort would be where the NPC himself is a juggernaut and assists in fighting while moving, or simply armored enough to take a beating. There is also the NPC shenanigans of them being a VIP and forgetting something very important and you have to bust your a** again to retrieve the item only for it to be a cigar case or something (Yes. Fast and Furious reference intended.)

Reminds me of the Bespin level from Jedi Outcast where you have to protect an R4 unit while he casually rolls his way through a terrace full of tripwire mines that will one hit him all the while being shot at by snipers on the roof top from across the way.

If I ever made a game, I'll make sure most of the important missions are escorts but it will be either
A. That fucker runs and rolls like there's no tomorrow so instead of you waiting, you'll be the one to run.
B. You can switch to that character back and forth whichever you choose and can tank and punch at the same lvl of your main character
C. Or speed them up to running speed idk

I think silent hill the room was probably the last time a big game studio made an escort NPC that was actually good.
You could give them a weapon and they were fairly competent, not as good as you but not awful.
