  • Saddle Issues And Arse Discomfort (Tips On Bike Saddles)
One of the question I get asked quite a lot is what saddle do I have on my bikes. I am guessing that people are asking me this because they are experiencing saddle discomfort while cycling. This can come in many forms: saddle sores, friction saddle sores and general arse discomfort. Many of the pain issues that cyclists experience are generally not the fault of the bike saddle itself but more about the rider not sitting on it properly. Many cyclists first reaction is go out and buy a new saddle for their bike, usually the biggest one they can find when this is actually not the best solution. Most pain and discomfort associated with cycling and bike saddles can be alleviated quickly and easily and in most cases it does not involve buying a new bike saddle.

One additional bit of advice that I'd like to throw in, is to remind yourself to occasionally get out of the saddle and ride while standing, even though it might not be as comfortable at first. It'll help on longer rides, just as frequent stops will. Don't wait for your arse to get sore, though. Think of it more as a precautionary measure.

I had terrible issues with friction sores. Nothing made it better UNTIL... Brooks. I now own 10 different iterations of Brooks saddles - B17s on my all-rounder and mountain bikes and Team saddles on my two road bikes. Problem solved. They’re expensive and a tad heavy, but once they break in, it’s like sitting on a couch. I have quite a collection of stock saddles if anyone needs one.

After years of saddle discomfort, despite several bike fits, I stumbled onto a saddle that works for me. It came on my system six. The first time I saw it I thought for sure that it was going to be a torture device! Surprise, surprise !! It's actually the most comfortable saddle I've ever used!! I quickly replaced all 3 saddles on my other bikes with it, including my mountain bike. No more pain or saddle sores! You are right that the smallest of changes can have a huge effect on comfort!!

LOL you described in graphic detail a saddle sore and then danced around crotch numbness. No judging I just think where people establish boundaries are fascinating. Well done video! I agree with all of what you've said and add one thing. Increase the strength of your legs. I think a lot of cyclists start out with a certain amount of discomfort and it wanes because you a) get used to the pressure of the saddle and b) your legs get stronger. Old school roadies were always telling me that the majority of the weight should be transferring power into the pedals. That releases a lot of pressure from your hands and bum. I cross train in a way that builds leg and core strength and find it helps a lot. In the past, that was yoga. Now I'm focusing on compound lifts.

Have used brooks b17 standard for 40 years, worn a couple out but you shouldn't wear padded shorts the saddle won't break in or ride properly because the padding stops the saddle correctly shaping to your sit bones

I purchased my Brookes B17 saddle from Holdsworth's in Putney, London. Roy Thame the owner said "Of course you will need it to be "Butchered" before you ride it, everybody else does". This meant having the surplus leather cut from the sides, nose and rear cut away, rivets removed and replaced with large headed copper rivets, the shine rubbed off and a heavy dose of leather preservative. It then took about two weeks to cure. Boy, it was a great saddle. Used to swop it between my road and track bike both of which were Holdsworth / Campagnolo framed bikes of course. Thanks for the video Leonard.

I tried a larger saddle once on my mountain bike and it didn't last longer than 1 hour before it went back to the LBS. So, I totally agree that a large saddle can be painful, but many new cyclist want that big seat though. I've tried to educate a few of them on this.

Great vlog - I’ve lost count of how many saddles I’ve swapped out over the years only to find, as you rightly say, that there are a whole host of other factors that affect comfort besides the saddle itself. The most significant for me have been the following:
-o- Correct saddle height and handlebar reach (can cause you to push back and increase the pressure on your bum if wrong).
-o- Saddle cut-out on an otherwise stiff saddle (some of the more extreme cut-out variants are too unstable if the cut-out is too big and the saddle casing to thin)
-o- Losing weight (less weight in your upper body pressing down)
-o- Correct saddle size according to your sit bones
-o- Rounder shape, verses flatter shape, however that may be different for other riders, of course

Good subject to do a video, I went thru my wallet earlier this year searching for good saddle and found (2) Trek/Bontrager saddles; Montrose Elite Bike Saddle and Arvada Elite Bike Saddle. I love these. Arse feels good on both bikes now. Also, you're spot on about having fresh shorts, bibs, to ride in. After 30+mile ride, no way would I put them on again for another ride, they go straight to my laundry room (jersey too). Thanks Len, ride on.

From long experience, the crucial part of advice on bike fitting of any kind is to take measured and calculated suggestions as a starting point from which you make small changes in all directions and see what resonates with you. Everyone is unique and fit-by-numbers should not be followed blindly. For saddles in particular, again from experience, test in all directions of change, even counter-intuitive ones. For a long time I was using Brooks B17, fit was good but particularly on long ranges there was a bother. Surprise came when I tested B17 Narrow, an unexpected Aha!!! moment. Better fit for me was a narrower saddle and long distance discomfort ceased (while I expected that a wider saddle may be "common sense" answer). So, test, test, test.

A proper bike fit is the best money you'll ever spend IMHO. The second best money spent is a proper saddle, if needed. I've never fit well on the saddle that comes with the bike. I guess I'm just special that way. I currently use a Brooks C17 Cambium (cut out). This saddle isn't the traditional Brooks leather. I knew I'd ride in rain & poor weather and didn't want to deal with "shrinkage" and additional maintenance. I like it so much I bought a second to have on both bikes (replaced a fizik aliante). Keep in mind, saddles are a personal thing and what works for one person may not work for another. Great info, but did we really need those visuals of the boil! Sheesh. I won't be able to sleep tonight.

Hi Leonardo.I have been on bad saddles for half century. Then around 2000, saddles started to get better, different sizes, length, width. That took care of lot of problems.Like you said, bike fit made things even better. The longer you sit,the harder your rear gets that solves a lot of problems.Around 2006 i met a salesman in Arizona that sold Castelli bike clothing.Never thought about buying this brand,to costly. He said gave them a try.Incredible, even so my rear is hard as a wooden board,it is like sitting in a high quality car seat, non only, you can wash them until the fabric looses it's color. The other day i got on the bike,no problem.Consider i have been on rollers in the house for few hours while in Lock Down.If some rider have issues hard to resolve, try this Brand.Ciao from partial lock down.

Firstly. Wipe down your "backside" before putting on a fresh pair of your favorite shorts. Makes a huge difference ! I don't know if this has been said already. But. When the saddle is correctly fit you should not have any numbness in the delicate parts and you will not notice the saddle at all when riding.

As a new cyclist this issue is very relevant to me. Unfortunately, the only bike shop in town did not offer or suggest a bike fit. I purchased the Giant and went on my merry way. I chalked the soreness up to being a new rider and age. However, after a month of cycling (2 to 3X per week) I could not go for over 1 hour at a time without heading home. By the way, I did wear a pair of quality biking shorts. I researched the issue and discovered sit bones, saddle size & type etc. Ultimately, I purchased a selle italia 140mm. Rode it for an hour and no discomfort except a little irritation in the manly region. Made a slight adjustment and will go for a longer ride tomorrow. I said all that to say if your a newby heed Leonard’s advice and save this video for future reference and share with your friends. I am.

I have three bikes from three different shops and each shop fitted the saddles for me . You know they use the same formulas so all three saddles were dialed in pretty near the same . What took comfort to another level was a proper gel seat with the gel padding in the right places . The gel is another layer of shock absorption though it is kind of heavy but not exceedingly heavy .

In the end i found flipping the stem so it wasn't slammed, sorted out my woes. A lot of shops can measure that. Chamois creme is overpriced but I find it helpful. I buy "moisturizing cremes" women use at night, the thicker the better. It is 1/5 the price.

You mentioned having a good bike fit. Come across some videos where the fitter had a back ground in physiotherapy where they check out things like your leg length. Quite a few people legs differ in length so a shim under a cleat even things up an stops you rocking and being more stable.
Crank length is often not considered we just use what's on the bike, but I have just gone shorter to a 165mm and amazed how this is improving my comfort on the bike. The shorter cranks take some pressure off my knees and open up my hip angle and make it easier to ride in the drops

After a few hundred miles you can actually see where your sit bones are as the saddle forms to to the shape of your butt. Without doubt the most comfortable saddle you can buy, and the most hygenic as you dont sweat as much with leather. I found changing from a laid back Seatpost to an inline helped a lot. It can be a question of reach, pulling you forward onto the non-supportive part fo the saddle so i always say look at stems first especially if you maxing out your fore and aft adjustment on your saddle. Also, the new hydraulic levers can be really long, again pulling you forward to reach the breaks. Ill really think manufacture need to take this in to account they seem to just throw on stems willy nilly ive had to an 80mm stem on my bike to compensate.

One of the seams was causing trouble be that wearing it inside in or out made no difference. (Sometimes it does make a difference wearing outside in with most brands, again for me.)

I remember reading something that said if you have a lot of discomfort within an hour - it's the saddle, if you have it after an hour - it's the shorts. Do you think this is true? With cheap, thinly padded shorts I had a lot of sit-bone discomfort after a couple of hours riding. I have found that 'endurance' shorts of 15 -18mm padding can make more of a difference than a new saddle.

I had arse soreness and went through 3 saddles in the first 1000 miles on my cycling comeback. Then I learnt enough to measure my sit bones and the problem became obvious. Average sit bones are 90-110mm apart, mine are 140mm! So add 20-30mm for riding position and the average person needs a saddle 110-140mm wide - the average width of a saddle that you can easily buy! Add 30mm to my 140mm and you get, well a Specialised at 168mm or a Brooks at 175mm. I went for the Brooks because you don't hear bad things about them and if they have been selling the same saddle since 1878 they must be good! So the first step before buying a new saddle should always be to measure your sit bones. Then you know what range of saddles to start with.....

In some cases a little saddle tilt does help.

After 4 yrs of riding and tinkering with position, best thing I did was get a £12.99 Dunlop thing from B&M. Tried it just fir a laugh. Looks a bit big but I’m v comfortable and faster! Unbelievable how better I’m riding.

Personally I found the bike fit had a few years ago a total waste of money. When I got the bike back outside I tried to ride it and it felt like my knees were in my chest and there was no way I would have been able to ride the bike like that for 60 to 70 miles so I had to put the saddle height back up to what it was before the do called bike fit. My experience of a bike fitting wasn't particularly good.

Some pristine posterior angles here. My own rear has remained clear of such bum bruising. I was blessed with a more than ample arse (thanks mum) so that might have something to do with it.

When I did long runs I found a pair of unpadded cycle leggings, ordinary pants and a B17 was all I needed - no padding at all.
Funnily enough yesterday I went out on my touring bike (B17 equipped) instead of the road bike for a change, and where at the end of the ride I would expect to start feeling a bit uncomfortable I was absolutely fine

My sit bones do get a bit sore from a 40 km ride on our more rural roads on the outskirts of Ottawa, Canada. Our winters get down to almost -30C, but we gets lots of freeze-thaw cycles nowadays. That plays havoc with the pavement, which gets cracked to bu99ery. Not a problem today though; they're covered in snow, so I'm not planning on riding outdoors today.

I am not sure if it's just my misery. Could be because I started biking higher distances recently. Default saddle that came with my Specialized Allez was bad (feels too wide on the wide part, chafing under my ass), my usual commuter saddle that was always fine for 5k-10k is also bad to go 40-50km, even with proper bibs. I feel I move around on the saddle often searching position, maybe that's why, or perhaps the cheap bibs are the fault... some chafing here and there.. taking a break for a few days :( it can be super frustrating, I go 50km where at 20 I am already uncomfortable, and I feel I could go 80 easy if my ass allowed me. Tired of moving saddle millimetrs in every direction. Ordered 4 cheap road bike looking saddles from amazon, still cheaper than 1 good brand, maybe one of them will be the right shape and firmness...

I thought pain in the ass was just part of cycling when I started up again in 2013, I work chamois as well. Every video I watch on this subject says go to the bike shop and they will let you try different saddles, well the bike shops in my area look at you like you are crazy when you do that. I got lucky in 2016, I bought a mountain bike, a specialized. Over time I realized my ass felt fine after my rides, one day I forgot the Chamois shorts, and it was fine. I put that seat on my other bikes and yeah, no problems. This saddle comes in 2 sizes 145 mm and 155mm the 155 was what I had. I have 6 bikes and they all have the same saddle. if I sell the bikes, the saddle stays with me. Now if I could just get rid of the wrist pain.

It's all about a bike fit. If it doesn't fit you, you have to fit it. This is harder, if you are not the one it was designed for, and more so for some.
What is hilarious about the comments, is most of them relay stories that are the equivalent of saying', "I just ordered a grey suit and it didn't fit , and once, they sent me one that did. It was blue."
Get fitted . Get measured. Use that to help you find what works , and see how well it correlates to what you see hanging in the store. Data is not the plural of anecdote. You mean you're not a size 38R? Whoda thunk? Part of the glory of the Brooks is it conforms with use. Used ones, unless pretty much unridden, often fit like someone else's shoes.
At one time shoes were not made right and left and came in one size. Then somebody measured, it seemed to help.

Love this one. Very well chosen words. I’m curious (I asked this on another video, but didn’t get an answer). I have about a 50 inch waist, and cannot find cycling shorts anywhere. I followed your amazon link and looked at the ones there, and love the fact that they go up to 4XL, but according to the size chart that’s waist 38-42 which is far too small. any advice on where I find cycling shorts big enough?

Most of the problem stems from the fact road bikes don't have suspension so all the vibration is transmitted through the road to the body. My commuter bike though heavier has suspension and feels alot more comfortable. Avoid these super slim saddles and get a good padded one.

i'm having trouble understanding how a wider saddle can't possibly make arse feel better. My theory is this, the more square inches, cm, your saddle is, the less pressure you will have per sq inch, cm, on your arse. How can this not be true in all cases.?? Its like sitting on top of a thin fence vs sitting on a cake pan.. We all know we would rather sit on a cake pan.

  • @dolittle6781

Maybe I missed something here, but the roughest ride on two wheels today has got to be a bicycle. Relatively high speeds on rough, bumpy roads almost everywhere combined with no meaningful suspension on most bikes I’ve seen makes it feel like you are sitting on a saddle with an invisible jackhammer beneath your butt with virtually your full body weight contributing -- vibrating up and down to the countless, constant micro and sometimes large-scale impacts. I should hope you never hit a gnarly pothole or an unpainted speed bump. It’s not your body, folks. It’s the design of the bicycle. It was probably never intended to be riddened for more than a couple of miles and now people are riding around the world on a bike all loaded down with gear -- plus the one-two punch, the front wheel bump and then immediately the rear wheel bump! Ouch!
