  • Are you considering RV life but you’re not sure what to do with your pets? Maybe you’re wondering if traveling with dogs & cats can even be an option? In this video, I’m going to share 5 tips that will make RV life with pets easier for YOU and for your furry friends.
    When we first started RV life we did not think we would ever be bringing our pets with us. We brought our dog but left the cats at home when we first started those weekend or week long RV and camping trips. BUT as we started traveling more on a full-time basis (we spent more nights in our RV in 2020 than in a sticks & bricks home) we realized that paying for a house sitter and not bringing the animals (while convenient), wasn’t practical.
    Then we decided to relocate our home base which FORCED us to have all of our animals as we because full-time RV’ers during this transitional period. We have two cats and 1 large dog. We found out quickly what works and what wasn’t working when it came to living with pets in our RV.

    We had a 17-year-old cat that traveled everywhere with us. She was leash trained, went out to go potty, could use a litterbox too. She flew with us, including to and from Europe. And stayed in hotels. Cats are very intelligent, and easily trained. She was our love, and 💯 percent involved in our lives until she died.

    The only problem with the hands free if you have a large dog who spots something and tries to run. I know my leash was around my fist and both hands were full. He drug me down hill until the dog lot fence stopped us. She was a Boxer Hound mix. Fortunately I didn’t fall needles to say I hadn’t ran that fast since I was a kid. 😂

    One thing we learned the hard way was to buy a duplicate set of leashes and collars. We even used a checklist and still forgot them on our last adventure.

    I suggest the corigated cat beds and little kitty hammocks. One gives something to rest on and scratch, and hammocks give vetter support on tracel dats and can be moved.
    I've also used a water bottle for cats to drink from.
    And I have a collapsible cage I use for my feline as an outdoor playpen. can hook toys and hammock and let them enjoy outside safely.
    little work could set up to hook to side of rv and have a window to open to let them come and go.

    A must have item for us traveling with our lab is the dexas mud buster paw cleaner. It's a cup with silicone "fingers" and you put just a little water in it and dip your pet's paws one by one into it. The fingers clean off any mud or dirt, and it comes with a couple microfiber towels to dry them off. It only takes a few extra seconds but really helps keep the trailer clean!

    Very interesting information. We aren't full time but we have traveled with three Golden Retrievers. I will be VERY honest...it adds such a level of tension that it's not fun. We have a three week trip planned this summer to visit our kids who have multiple dogs/cats and we've made the decision to leave them home with family. Part of me feels guilty but the other part of me is looking forward to the peace and quiet. We need to work with them on training so they understand the rules. Right now they're just majorly spoiled.

      It does add a level of stress with pets - not going to lie. When we travel we completely move out of our house and travels for months at a time. Boarding costs and/or finding people to want to pet sit for months on end is difficult. So in our case, we bring our furry friends along.

    My favorite pet hack is the outdoor Xpens. We camp with an Irish Setter and Boxer. We set up 3 pens off to the side with their own outdoor rug, collapsible water dish, pet beds and they even have a pop up tent if needed for shade.

    Even at home, I preportion the dog food into ziplock bags. This way, all I need to do is grab a bag in the morning and feed her. No need to measure the food and it keeps pests out of it. When we go camping, all I need to do is grab the number of bags per day I need. Once the bags are empty, they are flat and take up no space at all and ready for the next time. I have camped with dogs for the last 30 years, 20 of those in tents. Got my first pop-up 10 years ago and now have a travel trailer. Seems like plenty of space now. Last year it was me, my son, my two dogs, and his dog in a 24 ft tt. We crated two of them, the third was okay left out when we were out and about. Fun times was trying to get out of the camper in the morning with three dogs at the door not so patiently waiting to get out themselves.

    I'd like to thank you for this video. You certainly gave me a few things to think about, and a few good ideas. I have been researching full time RV living for almost 2 years. I'm still 6 to 8 months away (pending selling the house and finding the right rv). It's been a while since I have seen a video for RV life that I find helpful. I grew up in camper vans and RV's, so I'm familiar with the workings.
    I'm planning on taking at least one cat (4 or 5 years old. She is a mellow cat, and is ok riding in a car. However, I recently rescued two more babies (Feral foundlings) that I have bonded with a little TOO much, to simply hand them off to the next person whose looking for a cat. They have imprinted on me, and sit with me on my desk as I watch videos like this.
    If I keep them, it will certainly be an adventure. Just me, and 3 cats.

    I have a set up like you do for the hands free but I use a regular Fanny pack and hook a retractable lease to it so I can carry liquids and snacks for both the dog and I. We use it for long hikes. If it is a short walk than I just hold the leash because usually it is a walk for the dog not me. Lol.

    We just back from our maiden voyage in a 27.1 Thor ACE with a chow/ pointer/ lab cross and out indoor/outdoor American short hair last night. Both fur babies are about 3 yrs old. Dog did great except for crying constantly when we are out of site but the cat loved to ride looking out the window between naps. But the cat hated the harness and did manage to escape at 11:30 at night at a rest area along a busy hey. Talk about panicking. He is always trying to get out and explore. How do you keep cats happy and safe. Had a calm collar on him which did help some but that bugger is fast on his paws especially when you are trying to get out the door with the dog on her leash. Helpful tips please! Litter was not an issue got pine pellet litter and a rug under a large plastic wash bin in the shower and just moved it when we needed the shower. Might try to see if bin will fit in mud space near steps next run so I don't have to prop the bath door open all the time.

    I am learning so much! Thank you all the tips.
    Our pets are a big concern of ours as we are envisaging RV Life (not quite full time but almost).
    We are taking our first RV trip at the beginning of June and we are leaving the animals behind (not our rig... renting to see how or if we even like it first). But we would not even consider RV Life without our pets... Knowing there are ways to make it work is awesome.
    The litter box shown in the video is awesome... but how easy was it for the cats to adapt to a new litter box?
    One of our 2 cats is outside most of the time, roaming around or hiding/sleeping in his own personal hideaways. The other one is an inside cat.
    Any experience with that? Are your cats going outside at all?

    • @GratefulGlamper
      @GratefulGlamper  3 роки тому

      Our cats have been indoor kitties only. I switched to this littler box for about a week BEFORE we took off on the road so they had time to adapt before being in a new space. They’ve been using the littler box with no issues now that we’re back in the RV

    We are taking a short 4 night trip next month with our 60lb GoldenDoodle. This will be his first time in an RV, we are renting one. He does great on road trips in our other cars so I don't see any real issues but the question I have is do you use a seatbelt harness for your dog when traveling. We are somewhat inconsistent when using ours in our other vehicles, just worried about how much he would wonder around all over the place in a class A.
    Really enjoy your channel and all the great tips you and your husband provide.

    All great ideas! Now I kinda wish I had a cat to go traveling with me. I’m curious though how you monitor the inside temperature of the RV while you’re gone and your pet has stayed behind for the day. Do you have something in place for that?

    • @GratefulGlamper
      @GratefulGlamper  3 роки тому +1

      We don’t….yet, there are several of these remote temp monitors on Amazon. We usually don’t leave for more than 3-5 hours at a time if the dog can’t come along and we’re usually in pretty temperate climates (not super hot or cold).

    I will be buying an RV in the next few months. I have looked and researched sooooo many RVs...I have 8 rescues and have decided on the the Thor Class C Outlaw because of the porch like area. The nine of us will be living in the RV full time. I'll be taking dog crates AND portable fencing. Does anyone have experience with putting up a portable fencing in parks? I plan on having at least 24 panels that go all the way around the C. We'll be traveling between Tampa, FL, Houston, TX and Waco, TX (I10 and I75 through Florida). I see a lot of boondocking in our future!🤔 PS They will rarely, if ever (!) be alone. IF I do leave them they will be in their crates with A/C of course!

    I’m so sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m not looking to travel. I just have to sell my house before I get foreclosed on. I struggle with my mental health (panic disorder and depression) staying employed is impossible these past few years. I’ve started a dozen jobs in the last 3 years. So I’m gonna have to sell my house and I have 2 dogs and three cats. Now I see it’s possible to live with all of them in an RV. Thank God. But where can I live with them? Like where am I allowed to park my RV with them? I know that trailer parks (sorry if that’s not the correct term) don’t allow pets or if they do, it’s only like one cat. I just want to be able to be safe and keep us all together without ending up totally homeless.

    We trip with our rescue cat - who has epilepsy, which makes boarding super expensive for a medicated cat. We were able to put a litter box under a dinette bench and cut a hole. We have a little litter mat just outside. Our biggest concern is getting her happy with travel: she is crated to keep from under the driver's feet, but wish she could be free so she's settle and not cry. Anyone got ideas?

    Biggest tip I can give pet owners so don't take a pet you have just adopted or purchased with you. You need to give them time to adjust to being part of your family. It takes an animal a minimum of 6 months to begin to adjust to living with you. We made the mistake of taking our 2 rescue dogs with us too soon. We had them about 5 months before we took them camping thinking they would do OK, unfortunately they did not. They didn't eat or sleep, they reacted to everything, and they were just not comfortable amd were stressed with the whole experience. That was their only trip with us that year. After that trip we started working to acclimate them to camping. We would sit in our driveway or front porch at home so they could get used to people and other dogs walking by and not barking at them. We set up our camper at home and slept in it with them so they could get used to the noises and where their "safe" places were within the camper. A year after that first camping trip with them we attempted another camping trip with them close (15 minutes away)to home so in case every thing went bad we could take them home. Just that extra year and the work we did to get them used to it made a world of difference-it's like night and day. They are no longer stressed out by the experience and look forward to our camping trips now.

      You can start desensitizing a dog to camping or outdoor living from day one. Took my puppy at 3 months old for his first camping trip and he did fine. He did spend most of in his pen outside just watching tho and at home he had been sleeping in that same pen sense day one and whenever I’d take him places just for a few hours or evening at the lake the pen would go and he preferred being in the pen for sure if they’re was children around he felt safe in it so he did fine just watching from a distance while camping for the weekend he’s five months now and has loved all camping trips and lake trips he is in his pen or attached to me at all times tho
