What makes the story of “Swing You Sinners” even darker is that considering the fact it was made during the Great Depression, and people were *literally* starving to death, stealing a chicken (especially a hen) would be considered stealing a renewable food source because of the eggs, which was *extremely* vital to people (especially with families) during that time and was potentially-deadly to go without. I know it’s a cartoon and you can chalk a lot of it up to animation limitations at the time, but we only see the one chicken until it has babies when Bimbo tries to steal it (there’s a single scene that shows the inside of the coop is empty), and we never see the actual owner(s) of said-chicken, just the random police officer lurking behind the chicken coop. During the graveyard scene, the (vampire?) bat sings *”chickens* you used to steal,” implying Bimbo’s done this before (possibly *several* times). The chicken fighting back & taunting him in the beginning kinda confirms this too if she’s seen him take others before her. So not only was he stealing chickens, but he was possibly stealing food from a family’s mouth, and they likely called the cops to do a stakeout & put a stop to it after one of them (most likely an elder or a child) starved to death because he stole all their food. By that logic, if Bimbo’s thievery caused someone’s death (especially a child), then it’s considered indirect-murder (don’t know if there’s an actual legal term for that), and the torment & death sentence from the ghosts is kind of justified. Sorry Bimbo, but you *really* screwed yourself on this one.

You know, Today we may see these shorts as disturbing and barbaric. But you need to remember that the culture was a whole lot different through the 1910s to the 1930s. Back then, these were entertainment. Some of you may already know this, but I just wanted to let other people know who aren't aware of this.
Jacob Jackson Very good point, man. We don't even have to go far for a relatable example, we can look at first video games and crude character designs in those.
These things for the most part aren't even as creepy or strangely moving as they are made out to be. It's almost silly how the descriptions get about these things. The one with the two brothers for example. They go on about uncaring abuse and such and can't seethe simple point of two slightly different age children bickering about spending time together and the older wanting to do his own thing and the younger being stubborn oninsisting that he go. Then purposely misconstrueing the mental images like the chair to their ends as well as the joke at the end about the water.

@@Fel1xF7W but it wasnt for kids, but some kids saw in, and cartoons were not tv, they were theatricl, but that one probably it was projected, in little theater
For me, even some of the blandest or more innocent old cartoons seem eery just because of the emptiness of the poor audio, the black and white color schemes, and just surrealness and overall emptiness of it. I think that's one of the reasons why I love old cartoons so much.
Scrappy is a very realistic take on siblings when parents don't put in the effort to acclimatize their kids to each other. Not so much the kids fault but the parents.
@@jerrysmith8814 considering people think Veronica (on netflix) is too scary to watch the whole thing, this video would probably cause them to drink holy water instead of their usual beverage every day
The thing about Peanut Vendor is that it was presented as an experimental animation. They always say the first attempt is rough.

There’s something so surreal yet so charming about animation as old as the ones depicted in this video. It’s amazing how filmmakers back then were able to put so much heart and passion into this work, only for most of it to be forgotten by time.

Though the purposely creepy stuff was sometimes like old Grimms' fairy tales trying to scare people (well, kids...it was different back then) into learning lessons.
9:03 "The music cuts out from time to time, leaving you with a second or two of silence..." *background music in this video coincidentally cuts out right then*

I like how when you talked about Cuphead, after you showed Devil being beaten, there was a clip of a ghost doing the same hand movements that Cagney Carnation.
The Balda characters look light nightmare beings. For example, when the Bearded Guy talks, his mouth stretches out to the point it looks creepy. Also,he also closes his right eye when he talks, all while giving the viewer a surprised look.10:10

One thing I have noticed about Russian animation is that they have a very unique style to them. A lot of them are very well and beautifully animated but their character designs have this weird style of being charmingly cute but also taking a turn for the weird and just sticking with you.
As someone who grew up on Soviet cartoons (even though I was born just after the USSR) most of them are very weird and creepy looking. They weren't scary to me as a kid but looking back on them I realise they look weird 😂. Whenever I show them to people they freak out

Courage The Cowardly Dog has all of these element combine imo. Darker and creepy atmmosphere with a decent story representation in every episode. That's what make Courage The Cowardly Dog being one of the strange masterpiece show to these day

The camera mans revenge is honestly really cool! Tho the thought of using real dead bugs is weird.

Actually The Cameraman's Revenge is surprisingly sweet in a weird sort of way...
What's creepy is that they used dead insects as the characters. That's pretty fucked up if you think about it.
UA-cam Rep. That's gross
Sweet as in awesome or sweet as in cute
I don't see anything wrong with it, partially because insects aren't "creepy" to me at all.
The story concept is weird
I fucking love these old cartoons/animation. I don't find them disturbing at all but rather intriguing. They really inspire me from how creative and real they were back in the day. I find it deep and beautiful

It's obnoxious.
That first photo of the artist in "Revenge" was not the one named but is the legendary Ray Harryhausan shown with model from early Sinbad movie . You know, Today we may see these shorts as disturbing and barbaric. But you need to remember that the culture was a whole lot different through the 1910s to the 1930s. Back then, these were entertainment. Some of you may already know this, but I just wanted to let other people know who aren't aware of this.
Jacob Jackson Plus the censors and laws for animation was way different then it is now, especially since animation was a new concept in those times.
The modern day now is full of sensitive snowflakes

For me, even some of the blandest or more innocent old cartoons seem eery just because of the emptiness of the poor audio, the black and white color schemes, and just surrealness and overall emptiness of it. I think that's one of the reasons why I love old cartoons so much.
Scrappy is a very realistic take on siblings when parents don't put in the effort to acclimatize their kids to each other. Not so much the kids fault but the parents.

The thing about Peanut Vendor is that it was presented as an experimental animation. The best part of experimental anything is what could come out of them, as seen by the mentions of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Wallace and Gromit.
They always say the first attempt is rough.

There’s something so surreal yet so charming about animation as old as the ones depicted in this video. It’s amazing how filmmakers back then were able to put so much heart and passion into this work, only for most of it to be forgotten by time.
These animations need a comeback
It’s impressive how the right use of music and voice can make anything seem eerie. Swing you sinners is actually pretty funny.

One thing I have noticed about Russian animation is that they have a very unique style to them. A lot of them are very well and beautifully animated but their character designs have this weird style of being charmingly cute but also taking a turn for the weird and just sticking with you.
