As we always say these are our opinions, not law. We have our own particular tastes in music and that is what directs our overall opinion.
Build the community; let's talk in the comments!!!
Too many people act like they’re good because they THINK they could play someone else music.. first off, you can’t. Also this man not only can play this style of music at the highest level, in front of a live audience. But he wrote this.. writing a masterpiece like this is arguably more impressive than playing it. Absolute legend
Spot on! ❤️
💯
Yesss
*rolls eyes* I bet you’re not a musician.
Best comment
Danny Carey is not just some newbie. He’s what professionals call professional. He is the best. Hands down
Exactly. He's literally the best. Nothing else needs to be said lol
He’s your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer!
I prefer a different form of phrase...
"There is no one better."
That leaves room for others to be just as good, and also leaves the discussion open to statements like "in this genre" or "during their era of music" or "given the technology available at the time".
I really dislike "absolute" statement....because I dislike leaving room for someone else to have an opinion that I was wrong.
I have yet to see anyone do better at what Danny does. And I would wager that even Danny would LOVE to see someone improve on what he has built.
Once you've seen it done, it suddenly becomes much easier to achieve. I'm reminded of an old story about Microsoft Windows. I heard it a long time ago and certainly have the names wrong, but the general idea is:
One of Microsofts early employees took a tour of an HP facility...maybe during an interview or something...
During this interview he saw, on a computer screen, the first version of software that was able to have sub sections of "windows" on top of windows..We take multiple open tabs as a given these days...but there was a time when no one had even realized that it (only being able to see one screen...on one screen...at a time) was a problem worth addressing.
This person took the general idea back to Microsoft...told them what he saw, and eventually beat everyone else to market with a totally new software that gave massive boosts productivity... but here's the thing:
HP had no such software. What ever this person saw, they had misinterpreted. But, because he "had seen it" his team got to work recreating it and overcoming every obstacle, due in large part because they believed someone else ALREADY HAD fixed most of the problems and they were playing catch-up.
Point being, I would love to see someone invent an improved technique and then watch what Danny does with it. The problem leaders in a field often run into is that there isn't anyone in front of them.
Watching someone in front of you make mistakes and innovations is a MASSIVELY helpful thing.
Danny Carey isn't A drummer, he is THE Drummer.
Brann from Mastodon is a beast too, you should check out the drum battle between Danny and Brann
if Joey still be alive ............
Second best all time after Neil Peart
@@robertoverkamp4567 Neil lost top spot after he went on a decade long road trip.
@@adamlubieniecki9074 Joey praises this man as a god. Joey is nothing compared to Danny. Joey is good, but that’s at best.
"So far very simple stuff". Right after the whole intro odd time signature you didn't name. Count it it's nuts! Then the 4/4 resolve that makes more sense & is refreshing. I've not been a Tool fan but Danny Carey is like ET level percussion. All that tension & resolve is beautiful.
Indeed. Sorry, but the drummer in this video seems to be rather full of himself.
@@snarkyguy2657 It's almost like he assumed a 4/4 from the get go obviously not really paying attention. Finally said "odd timing" but made no attempt to decipher it. IMO a real percussionist would make some attempt out of pure curiosity & bewilderment.
I literally laughed out loud when he said that.
Exact exactly, at least I could tell you the first time listener LOL
I've watched tonnes of these reactions and it's amazing how many times the intricasies are completelty missed; more often than not they're too busy discussing what he's wearing over the intro. I was blown away with the slowing timing of the very beginning part, then the polyrhythms and the time signature of the verse the first time I watched it. How can musicians not be!?
You guy just witnessed one of the best drummers in the world, he is classically train with a master in music, also in this video he's 58 years old. Danny is a beast on the drums
He's 6'5" tall.
Aloke Dotta. Master tabla drummer trained him on the tablas.
@@hampyonce I’m 6’8”. But I only use my hands. No sticks.
@@jeffparris7726 Makes sense with all the odd time signatures. A hint of that tabla trigger too is sweet & telling.
Welcome to witnessing one of the best drummers on the entire planet mind blown every performance
Danny Carey is a living microprocessor. The math that goes on in his head is absolutely insane.
Some say he's looking for a rhytm that will confuse the sand worms of Arrakis.
I don't believe he is thinking anything when he plays, You simply cannot think about all of that, it's impossible. That is the magic of playing like that. It takes a foundation of incredible skill and muscle memory and theory but to play like Danny you just have to clear your mind surrender your well practiced body to the music . That is why he looks so zen when he plays, because he is.
Absolutely right, can hardly wrap my mind around Danny's skills
Just mindblowing
@@rony3646 I asked Danny what time signatures is the middle of Rosetta Stoned in. He said "I don't know, I don't count it"
Yes, he is THAT good
Yep. He’s said he goes off feeling, not counting. He also is one of the only drummers who doesn’t wear an ear piece live. Their guitarist said he doesn’t know how he does it.
Fun fact about Danny Carey: He was a great basketball player growing up but chose a career in music instead. Every arena Tool plays in, the team from that arena provides him a uniform, in this case they were in Boston
Fun fact: Larry bird went of record saying, "Danny is simply the greatest everything at everything. I wish I was him truthfully."
@@ForChrist661I'd love to see that source..
@@Lateralus138 It was like 15 years ago, it was right after Danny and Larry played 1-on-1 (which Danny won 21-17).
He's from Lawrence, KS. Whenever he comes to KC or Wichita he wears a Jayhawks jersey.
Wichita State has proven themselves…KU are cheaters just like my Orange. What are we gonna do??
Danney Carey to me is currently the greatest drummer on the planet in the greatest rock band in the world. Just saw them the other night in Las Vegas, they put on a show like no other band I’ve seen, four incredible musicians.
The thing about Tool is, they write musical compositions, not just songs. Each member of the band is a master at their instrument, including Maynard. They each put their talent and expertise equally into their songs, and all of them are highlighted in them. It’s a masterfully working cohesive unit of true artists, and poets.
People get so confused at why Maynard stands in the back and not the front as a frontman, it’s because of this exact comment. He’s not a “front man” he’s another instrumentalist. Front man is all hyped and vocals are more prominent, he blends in just the same as every other member
@@justinwilder3514 Exactly! It shows the lack of ego a frontman usually has. He knows and respects their talents, and contributions to the art that is their music. They all know that of each other. I’ve never really known of another band like that.
I love tool but Adam is definitely not a great guitarist. He just has an awesome style. But he can't stand with someone like Jason Richardson
@@Mavis709 is anyone better then Robert Johnson?
He sold his soul to the devil!
@@Mavis709 explain how Adam is not great at his craft, please. If you’re going to make an assertion like that, you need to explain. Because, if we’re just making random declarations,...fun! Here’s mine-Keanu Reeves is the greatest actress ever! Yep...ACTRESS!
I've heard this song thousands of times and it still gives me chills.
One thing I dig about Danny is his posture, his back is straight and aligned, keeps his shoulders upright and square and his wrist technique is spot-on, a genuine master on the drumkit; his posture exudes confidence
I bet Collins wished he kept his posture as good as Danny’s if he had he wouldn’t be in such a mess now
Let's not forget the dude is an athlete. He used to be a basketball player and he's a big guy. Look at his muscles
Take a look on Matt Greiner
I also want to say, that part of Danny Carrey's expertise, isn't always doing something CRAZY technical that no one else could reproduce. (And not that he doesn't do those things too, because he does). What's amazing is that he writes such great rhythm compositions that add SO MUCH FEELING to the song itself. Like, you can listen to GREAT guitarists, but not a tenth of them can make you feel like a David Gilmour would. Here, we have a man who is not only technically gifted with the ability to play masterful tempos and polyrythms, but he is also just a master at composition itself, adding so much thought and feeling into the song. This is why he is more than great, and to many Tool fans, a fuckin' legend. :)
Loved the video dudes!
Well said 👏🏻
Hes got the groove in the pocket of Bonham with the meticulous timing approach like Peart. Hes a drumming monster in a league of his own
Excellent comment!
Very well said
"You won't see that in a church." Is one of the best lines ever said about Danny Carey and Tool. Hands down! 🤣💀
Are you 12?
@@FlippyHambone huh? Why would anyone's age have anything to do with my comment?
i was just thinking the same thing lol i would say there are other reasons maynard might not like that
Truth, and there's more spirit of God in the guys of Tool than any "church" leader
@@pc1234asdf You should listen to more Tool.
You mention them playing this song for a long time....this song is actually off thier newest album they put out about 2 years ago. Let's not forget that Danny Carey is 60 years old and abbbbsssooolluuttteeellllyyyy kiilllllliiinnnngggg iiiittttttt!!
This drum masterpiece went over his head! It would take him months to get close to playing the first section
That wasn’t crazy? Not many drummers could execute that so perfectly. Most drummers probably couldn’t even count what he just did. At one point 4 limbs are playing in 4 different times.
This always blows my mind. I can barely get all four of my limbs working together well enough to keep me from tripping on a dust bunny.
Yeah, that's the Danny magic. He makes incredibly difficult things look easy. Also, there is a difference between 1. playing this drum part, 2. playing it live in front of a huge crowd, and 3. *writing* this drum part.
Not crazy? Nothing special? Dude, you couldn't even qualify to be a zit on Danny Carey's ass. There is a reason he is called "the octopus". I'd probably die laughing watching you try to perform a separate rhythm with each limb like Danny does flawlessly. Clown...
This guy “gospel drummers can do this, but they don’t”, yes because unless you’re one of like the top 100 drummers in the world, you had to google what the time signature is. I would love to see captain confidence here attempt to play the verse groove alone.
@@timbryan57 I think he hit 11/32 at one point there.
Gospel chops are blazing speed in muscle-memoried figures that are relevant to the individual's drumming style but what Mr. Carey is playing here is a mixture of off-timing (3s,5s,and 7s) simply looped over a straight tempo (2s,4s).
The thing that makes it difficult and unique is that one can't simply "learn" the pattern. One has to literally *FEEL* it....which takes years to get down this smoothly (to a metronome).
Props to the dude on the right who is understanding and recognising the actual dedication and time that this drummer has invested to get to this point.
And Danny was around 60 years old when this was recorded.
He's a frikkin' Master of this particularly beautiful craft of Drumming!
What am I doing with my life?😂😂😂
Nice video, guys; new subscriber her with notifications turned on.💚
This song is fantastic, especially rhythmically. The main riff, for example, is in phrases of 33/16. Of course you can subdivide that a million ways but that is the structure of it
Hence the 33 tee
Glad you counted it, I got lost in the late 20s!
@@dan.j.boydzkreationz knowing Danny his Jersey was probably on purpose 🤣
Yeah the way I hear it is a series of 3s and 2s divided into 2 8-beat measures. I'm not sure how Tool actually counts it but that's the natural feeling i get when I listen.
@@Gideonite the Jersey was worn because this concert was in Boston. Larry Bird was #33 and one of best players to ever play on that team. However, the “33” may also relate to the count. I mean……it is TooL.🌀
"so far very simple stuff" lol nothing about that was simple. Insane time signatures
Everyone thinks it’s easy to play until they try playing it.
Ask them to count it 😂
Logo percebi que esse dois não entendem do que estão analisando.
Non-drummers: OMG DID YOU SEE WHAT HE DID???
Drummers: Yawn.
Non-drummers: Yawn.
Drummers: DID YOU SEE WHAT HE JUST DID???
And I'm the one saying OMG both times. Not a drummer but I can usually tell when something's harder than it looks (because I've had it explained enough times by drummers lol), but at the same time I love some just plain awesome-sounding drums even if it's easier than it sounds since I can't do any of it anyway lol.
A little more insight into Danny's kit. He uses a combination of electronic pads and conventional drums. The pads with the designs on the heads are Mandala pads ( which he helped design and develop). He has 7 of those 4 to his left and 3 to the right. Each pad has 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric circles, each of these 7 zones can be programmed individually to a different tone so just like a regular drum the tone gets higher the closer to the rim you hit. You will notice at the start that there are 3 distinct tones on the pad depending on where on the head he hits it. Accuracy also comes into play. When he's playing the rim shots on his snare, the pad he's playing the triplet pattern on is a Korg Wd-1 wave drum, programmed to sound like a tabla. He has thousands of sounds that he can program the pads to sound like. As he says, it expands his vocabulary. This video was made shortly before Danny's 59th Birthday. Looking forward to watching more of your reactions, subbed for your enjoyable content. ✌🤘🤘
so, a beginner kit? 😁
@@xZOOMORPHICx well.....if you want to add in 2 kick drums, a 44lb cast bronze snare, 2 floor toms, either a pair of roto toms or rack toms, a 40" Paiste symphonic gong, the electronic key pad above it called a Marimba Lumina, a Roland hand sonic, all the electronic components for his pads and close to a dozen pieces of china (cymbals) plus anything I forgot or are unaware of,and still call it a starter kit........have at it.🤣🤣🤣✌

Something incredible about Danny Carey (drummer) is the way he can control the volume of his drumming with precision, slowly building volume and anticipation. #dannycareyisthegoat
Tool are the best at subtle. Every listen to their songs reveals something new that you didn't pick up last time. I've been listening to them since I first heard stinkfist in 1995 and I'm still getting something new from their music to this day.
Keep going on this journey and let it sink in and feel it crawl across your soul.
Explaining his drumming as "tough" is such an understatement.
Danny wrote one of the best drum riffs I’ve ever heard in “Pnuema”
Danny Carey is a polyrhythm God. Glad you’re enjoying Tool. Check out Right in Two with lyrics. Chilling.
"His technique's good so far.."
Bruh..
Anyway, I'm going to see this guys live in Feb next year. So hyped.
Me too!!! February 8th in Orlando. This is the only band left on my concert bucket list. I can barely stand it.
Seeing them in January...Tool should be on every bucket list.
I was at the show where this video was recorded, and will be back in the Garden again in February to see them. Can’t wait!
@@samneedsanap7802 I’m going to the Orlando show too! Can’t wait!
IKR? Yet these guys are 'musicians' LMFAO
Not to be rude, but I would love to see you emulate this masterpiece on a drum kit!
The man just said he cant do it lol
😂😂😂
It's definitely a workout on the wrists and arms, lol.
@@majorbigss1 Multiple times he states in this song that "not hard, though".
Have to agree with Rodney; would love to see this guy emulate this masterpiece.
That's what I thought! "...it's not crazy hard..." Okay... I am in for it... just let us witness your interpretation... ^^
He is definitely a master of all the styles. Before he was in tool, he was a session drummer and played in tons of other bands. He was even in a country band with Jeff Buckley in the late 80s before either of them blew up. Now both are legends. But he still plays a lot of other styles. He plays a lot of jazz and fusion stuff on his free time these days.
I still need to make it to the Baked Potato some time. I live fairly close to it.
@@chump203 I would love to see VOLTO!
What band was he in with Jeff Buckley? Are you sure?
@@HiddenHandMedia yes, I’m positive. I don’t know the name of the band before, and there are no recordings. It was a gigging band in the 80s in LA. They both were in tons of bands back then, even multiple bands at the same time, and both are very versatile in their playing styles and interests, so it’s actually not too surprising they ended up in a band together back then. But yeah, I’m totally positive. He’s said it in interviews before, and if you really want a specific citation I can give you right away now, you can watch the interview with Bill Manspeaker from Green Jello on the Trash Talkers UA-cam channel. He was close friends with Tool back then, and he mentions it in that interview from what I can remember.
I wish there was video of them playing together though, that would’ve been awesome to see.
Danny is such an amazing drummer, yet he's never self-indulgent, everything he does is within the flow of the song, and he always knows when and when not to play. Top 5 GOAT IMO
I love the porridge analogy. Lots of smart and interesting language from you guys to describe how this stuff works in this video and I really enjoyed it.
He's probably a really good teacher
Tool for me is a band where the drums is the lead instrument. If you listen to what the guitar and bass play is fairly simple and repetitive it actually speaks a lot about Dany’s writing. When you really break it down it’s amazing the patterns he writes and how they can be broken down mathematically. The fact he’s mixing rock, African and eastern styles in one song should tell you about his vast abilities. Plus I love his use of volume, those cross stick pattern swells in loudness and softness.
Danny is a legend. So glad you watched this
You are correct in sayin that Danny Carey plays like Terry Bozio. They are both ultra technical drummers with something extra. Thanks for video
I say it all the time, TOOL is art! And Danny Carrey is beyond kinikini!!
😊 and you spelt Kinikini the right way too💪🏽
Fukin WORD BRUV
Such restraint and subtle brilliance. That 4 minute interlude in the middle in insanely difficult yet he makes it look like child’s play. The ending is a thing of beauty. He quietly finishes not with a bombastic flourish but a perfectly balanced quiet ending.
Yes right back to the original rhythm, I love it it is so well constructed
Neil Peart Drum Solo (Live in Frankfurt)
The Professor's drum kit will blow your mind. Neil's mastery of his craft is evident with the precision in which he plays. With his passing last year, grateful for these recorded moments for generations to enjoy the GOAT.
Danny and Neil are the two GOATs of drums, imho. RIP Neil! Neil carried the torch and passed it to Danny and Danny finished what Neil started.
Tool makes more sense when you realize they have a lead drummer and backup guitars.
Holy moly. My eyes were just opened.
Depends on the album and song. The thing Tool taught me is there is no frontman in the band because they are all frontmen. Some albums or songs lean heavy towards one instrument but only because it serves the music best.
@@CosmicEpiphany I go see Tool for Danny. I followed him this Fall with King Crimson.
Best, most honest, most friendly conversation reaction! Respect to both of you. Keep on the path. Listen to the music. Don’t bother with music videos or lyrics. God bless to both of you. Spiral Out!
Keep going
Lol how you gonna say don’t bother with the lyrics and then quote the lyrics?
Theyll be in Europe soon. After seeing over 1200 concerts in my lifetime, and not being a hardcore tool fan, i can easily and honestly say this was absolutely and unequivocally the best show i have ever seen in my life. 3/12/22
Danny also plays drums for the band Volto, which is like an instrumental metal jazz band.
"He's technic is good so far..."
Me sipping my coffee.
Yeah Danny will get it together one day.
FERDA
Danny is the drummer's drummer. Incomparable. Thanks for your thoughts, anyway.
All anyone talks about is Dannys playing. For good reason he is the best drummer alive and top 5 all time. But what people miss is the sound and tone of his drums! He takes a lot of time making his drums sound amazing. His drum tone is unmatched. Best quote “you won’t see this in church. The church guys don’t do this “ LOL understatement of the year.
Danny Carey is one of the best drummers in the world recognized by hundreds of the greats. He was in top 10 drummers hall of fame way back in the day. Legend
But I gotta say as they got older their skills continued to improve, the timings, the complex rhythms the unique sounds and style.
Watch Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 days then this album Fear Innoculum. You will see the massive improvement over time
You guys will probably like Rosetta Stoned. He goes pretty ham on that song.
Danny plays a lot of Jazz outside of Tool, I believe.
This can’t be emphasized enough.
Check out Volto
The poly rhythms aside, his mastery of dynamics is what sets him apart from others. It imparts a sense of inflection, much like in vocals.
He’s in the conversation as one of the best ever. Listen to more. You mentioned poly rhythms but never the insane uncountable time signatures that he’s dropping 4 count fils into at exacting moments. Oh, BTW, video you watched is a ne song off new album and I believe he is 60 years old during that video. Due’s a damn Drum God!
Can we take a second to realize Danny hits the center of each skin and cymbal every time like a sniper in the center of a scope.
Can’t wait to see Tool in January for the first time after 25 years of listening. Saw A Perfect Circle in 2011, and it was insane but this is next level.
Happy for you, enjoy!
They're incredible. It's an experience, not just a gig.
Embrace the moment, remember we are eternal. All this pain is an illusion.

Really enjoyed your analysis and honest comments, glad you exploring different genres of music, textured
appreciate your reaction and that you notice the complexity of what he does 💜 they definitely have some songs with much heavier drums, as i saw others mention. The guys who make up Tool are regularly listed by other musicians as their favorite drummer/guitarist/bassist/singer. they’re all god-tier individually and really know how to work together to make the band as a whole shine.
You guys should keep pushing. This is the best review of this video I have seen. Well done!
The greatest living drummer
Only because Neil just passed, but love me some Danny
Better than Travis Barker!? jk
Larnell Lewis is typing...
The marvel that is Danny Carey is one of, if not the best thing that ever happened to a drum set
He is “the one” ☝️ at the peak of his profession
Danny, the only drummer that can take me to a whole other universe ✨
I like your commentary on how technically hard it is to do those rhythms and hitting
them drums so hard and being extremely tight on his timing and doing this in the
middle of a show and at almost 60 years old.
This was an amazing solo for a perfect song.
Danny is a versatile drummer; as with the other band members he writes his drums to fit the song, not always be the spotlight. He just happens to be good enough to have his share of the spotlight without trying to. They all are geniuses in their own right...
Anybody else get in their feelings for a second when dude said "so far pretty simple stuff" ? Great reaction tho he figured out eventually that Danny is a God
Danny's DRUMSTICKS look like HUMMINGBIRD WINGS in his hands. ✌
Tool are all playing Solos, but I know the pieces fit!
The most impressive thing is that he is 61 years old and 6'5" tall and can still drum like this!

I really enjoyed this reaction video, I’ve been listening to to Tool since the 90s but now have a great new appreciation for their drum skills because of this video. Thank you for pointing out so many informative things about his skills
It is a new song, they're just next level, no one touches this bands sound!
It's a new song, but they took 11 years to write and perfect it.
I have watched a dozen of these where amateur drummers try to critique Danny. It really gets stupid. Pert and Bonham would probably be the only two that could critique this genius. However, it was enjoyable watching these two guys talking, especially the drummer, who tried to put into words what Danny just did. Two thumbs up!
Danny Carey's sick time signatures and insane power makes him probably one of the top drummers on the planet.
You hit the nail on the head with the comment about being in the right headspace to listen to Tool. A lot of music is like chewing bubblegum. Tool is eating a four course meal.
The one point that is very much understated is Danny's creativity! There are maybe a handful of drummers that can pull this song off properly, but to create this masterpiece or anything close to it??? He is a beauty! You can see the enjoyment!
He is playing to the song. Some of the best things a drummer or any musician can do is have restraint to provide the dynamics a song needs.
I’ve watched many tool reaction videos but this is the first one to put Danny’s playing in terms of porridge. Good stuff fellas
Appreciated the analogy use. He’s on whatever outer planet just on musical influence alone. There’s also a moon orbiting that planet named after him based on his skill. Tool fans would name a galaxy after this man.
Was going to comment this on you guys' other tool react video, but- these are the first reaction videos i've seen where it's really clear the hosts are good musicians. nice work :)
Danny is jazz trained so he is definitely in the farthest reaches of the galaxy in terms of skill and versatility
Also studied Bol
Not just trained, he actively plays a variety of genres, including Jazz.
And then there's all the experimental, freeflow and freestyle stuff he's involved in.
He is a full on Jazz drummer too that is where he started. This is his style for Tool. I watched Chambers trying to play to this and I was a bit sad. He never sits in a pocket playing a straight pattern.
I’m a worship drummer, and while I’m nowhere near Danny’s talent, I use poly and fills like this. It has its place. The slow builds and explosive fills Danny does are so impressive.
Edit: Tool doesn’t use a click track either
Danny is the click track.
This is the best drum explanation for a non musician that I've seen yet. The thing I love best about tool is the drumming but I dont understand why I love it. Thanks for the explanation of why its so good!
You want to hear Danny Carey fully rippin it? You want to hear what it's like when Danny Carey sweats? You need to listen to Ticks and Leeches, The Grudge, and Pushit (Salival) period. Some of the greatest drum work that has ever graced my ears.
Pushit is top 5 songs of theirs for me. It’s so damn good!
Don't forget Chocolate Chip Trip!
Love the break down! My new favorite reaction channel!
Some other really good songs that are like Danny's paintings are:
Ticks and Leeches
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned [should be listened together in that order]
Pushit [Salival version]
He's also an accomplished Jazz musician - he's got quite a few videos of him doing this genre on UA-cam so give it a search 'Danny Carey playing Jazz'
Most of Danny's influences are from some form of jazz.
You can hear his jazz influences in Pneuma in particular. Now I need to check him out actually playing jazz!
I saw them twice.
Such a phenomenal band.
Anyone who say's they're overrated is a hater.
I challenge you to see them live, then tell me they're overrated.
Great reaction.
Danny Carey studied classical Indian tabla drumming for a few years so that definitely added to the vocabulary. (Edit: You're right, we thought you were going to be more impressed 😂 But we didn't know we were messin' with a gospel chops guy!)
Lolz
That is very true! Carey is a world-studied percussionist, especially Indian percussion. Being of Indian decent and recognizing his use of tabla etc. impresses the hell out of me and even our percussionists. These guys are in NO WAY accredited or qualified to "critique" a known master of percussion. But hey that's my opinion I suppose. This critique was garbage! They SHOULD be impressed by Danny Carey!
Bra, i have to give it up to the guy with the burn hoodie for two reasons. The first ID for his knowledge of terry bosio and the second for his fucking brilliant use of the porridge comparison! Spot on, original (id hope) and funny. Keep on keeping on guys! Long live tool!
If you want to check out someone Danny Carey geeks out over, Tomas Haake "the master of polyrhythms" in the band Meshuggah, Bleed is the moste popular one but i would suggest to check out drum playthrough of Clockworks or Nostrum (its heavy music).
Another thing to remember when watching that video is that Danny Carey was 58 when that was recorded. Some musicians "lose it" as they get older, but he has spent his life becoming a master of his craft. He is at the top of his game still at this age. If you want to hear Danny Carey in a different context, he also plays drums for a live jam band called Volto! It's more of a jazz fusion style.
Danny like his main influence, "The Professor", Neil Peart of Rush studied all styles of drumming. Both iconic drummers stated that their mentor was late great, Buddy Rich. Tool's fans called Danny "The Octopus" due to his hands and feet able to move in different rhythm or beat. Speaking of his influence, have both of reacted to Neil Peart's drum solo recorded live in Frankfurt, Germany?
I love watching you guys. Reminds me that playing music is more than playing an instrument. Anyone can play an instrument but not everyone can be a musician. Thank you for reminding me to be a musician. The best gigs I ever played were the ones I remember the most smiling faces of being in a moment. Those moments don’t come from playing notes, they come from touching a soul even for a moment playing music
Most of the greatest drummers like Danny have a huge Jazz background.
Bill Ward was a jazz drummer. He called himself a percussionist. Love love Bill Ward!!!! I highly suggest you check out some Black Sabbath, if you are not familiar. I would suggest “
Hand of Doom
effortless wizadry - love your channel guys
You have been exposed to a GOAT! As a percussionist I'm Glad you're not butthurt!😂 Only in another in a lifetime would it be possible for me to ever play like this; I'd love to see your version of this! ✌️ My Brothers and stay awake!
Appreciate the passion you brought to describing why this performance is beautiful/impressive
13.58 "it's very tedious". I've been alive for over a thousand years and that's the first time I've heard drumming like that described as tedious,. No matter how cool you think you are, it's ok to appreciate genius. Ok, he's not the fastest, he's not the youngest anymore, but he's all the proof you need to show you don't have to be either of those to be the best at it!
Lol it's like rubbing your stomach, patting your head, tapping your foot to a different rhythm, and doing your taxes all at the same time.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
16:21 interesting that you caught that. It seemed like he was so excited that he nailed that section that he got a little distracted. Kinda like at the end of recording a guitar track or something when you play it right the whole song, and the pressure of recording makes the last section more anxious, trying it keep it perfect. I can only imagine a scenario like this. Live, pro drum shot. He knew he was on the spot. The fact that he didnt falter more is incredible in itself.
He was grinning at Justin.
You guys sound cocky lol. I’ve been drumming for 20 years, mastered a lot of sounds, TOOL still remains one of my biggest challenges when playing a cover. Danny Carey is one of a kind.
He can play any style. He plays Miles Davis with 2 keyboardists, he can rock your face off with tunes like The Grudge or Aenema, he can do polyrythms like this, he plays what the music calls for, not just to show off. He is a master, and he comes from an alternate universe.
