I used this song in my mom's flower tribute for her funeral a few months ago. It was one of her favorite songs. Even people who barely knew her were brought to tears by this wonderful song. RIP Mom. You'll always be my buddy.
When I was a little girl and followed my father around, he often sang this song to me. It is a song, that has like so many songs become lost. It is bittersweet to hear it again.
This song was written by my great-uncle, Walter Donaldson, and was sung to my siblings, cousins, and I since we were born...as a young man, he had fallen very much in love with a beautiful Ziegfeld girl; they were engaged to be married, when she became very ill and died. Heartbroken, he wrote “My Buddy” in remembrance of her. He did eventually marry and had a daughter, Mom’s cousin Ellen. Doris Day sings the song beautifully, but this version she is singing only includes the chorus; there are two verses as well. Glad to see so many people enjoy it; he was an incredibly prolific songwriter; many were written in collaboration with Gus Kahn. This is one of my favorites; I perform it myself along with a host of other folks, it seems so timeless and appropriate in times of loss when words fail us...
I love this song, written by Walter Donaldson, his most durable song may well have been My Buddy written in l922, inspired by the unexpected and heartbreaking death of his young fiancé and curiously adopted during World War II as a song about male camaraderie among the allied troops. A simple but mesmerizing waltz tune, which, sung by an evocative singer, can still subdue a noisy nightclub audience into a reverent silence. I fondly think about some pets, and some people that I miss when I hear it.
M.J. Leger. Well, Mr Donaldson wrote the melody but the lyrics were written by Mr. Khan. In the Movie: "I'll see you in my dreams", they show Mr. Khan life. Ms. Day played Mrs. Khan in that fillm. I recommend that you should watch that film.
I agree Nada - a great song by Doris. I don't really like much of today's music - but I'm not that young so .... ! I really love the music from the 40's and 50's. I was a kid in the 50's -- so I must have been born too late. Glad you enjoyed ... hope you have a lovely weekend !!
dorisdayno1 -- I'm glad you're such a huge DD fan. There are a lot of us out here. Which is really amazing since she left Hollywood behind her more that 30 years ago ! Just shows what an amazing talent and wonderful lady she is. Thank you -- glad you enjoyed !! Have a great weekend !
Yes --- it certainly helps - doesn't it ? Gets us through many days. I really love this song from Doris ... she does a nice interpretation. So happy you enjoyed !
I'm so happy you're enjoying it ! I've noticed since the last yt update some of my video's are pixelated and a bit of a mess. Sorry to see this one is affected. I love old movies ... all of these stars were so wonderful. Thank you ... so happy you enjoyed !!
Of all the female actors and singers who have ever recorded their voices, I believe Doris Day's has got to be the clearest and best controlled. I have tried for all of my adult life to be so clear and pleasant to listen to. Your my hero.
I know - its all out there now - definitely no innocence ! I certainly miss the way it used to be. I do tire of the so called stars of today !! Thanks - glad you enjoyed !
Jean Arthur is one of my all time favorites !! June too ... the stars in my video are some of my favorites. They sure don't make 'em like that anymore .. that's for sure !! It is a beautiful song from Doris .. so happy you enjoyed !
R.I.P. MY BUDDY HERKY......YOUR BUDDY MISSES YOU......WHEN IT'S MY TIME TO GO I HOPE TO SEE YOU ONCE AGAIN.....YOU WERE ALWAYS WHAT A GOOD BEST FRIEND SHOULD ALWAYS BE....LOVE, HUGS, YOUR BUDDY BOB
I sing the song to my dog he's my buddy I really liked what you wrote or copies or whatever from Doris Day I like where your little intro says on your page such truths right under our noses🚫🕰🥳🎁
Lyrics: Nights are long since you went away I think about you all through the day My buddy, my buddy Nobody quite so true Miss your voice, the touch of your hand I long to know that you understand My buddy, my buddy Your buddy misses you My buddy, my buddy Nobody quite so true I miss your voice, the touch of your hand Long to know that you understand My buddy, my buddy Your buddy misses you
yes loved it, all of them are my actresses and i love all of them so much but of course i love doris the most with all my heart i am probably her youngest fan because i'm only 17 and i have loved her all my life at least from about 6 years old. i'm certainly probably her biggest fan in the united kingdom. thanks
This was absolutely beautiful. I love the music. Doris Day has such a beautiful singing voice. Thanks for sharing my favorites: Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Doris Day, June Allyson, Jean Arthur, and Claudette Colbert.

I have an all-white cat named, Buddy, that Doris and I sing to every morning. His ears perk up, along with his appetite. He must submit to brushing 1st(which he hates) before he gets breakfast. I swear that the combination of Miss Day's voice and title of this song, has worked magic. Buddy's almost a lamb while this is playing.
Oh Toni, these are such wonderful pictures! The song is new to us and is really beautiful. Thank you for this! Take care and keep smiling! Glowing stars and hugs..Jan and Susan. x

Wow. I was searching for this song to post on FB because my cat Buddy is in the hosiptal as I type. Just looking for a volcal for silliness sake. This is an amazing work with all the couples - it's beautifully done!
@WhatWouldZappaSay I hope your cat is ok and comes home soon. I have a cat named Neo and he's been in the hospital a few time so I know how you feel. Thank you ... happy you enjoyed the video ... hope Buddy gets well soon !

When I was a little girl and followed my father around, he often sang this song to me. It is a song, that has like so many songs become lost. It is bittersweet to hear it again.
My mom sang this to me before bedtime, and now it’s the only thing that calms my baby down

Thank you for sharing your story. How special that must be to you! I hope I will be able to find all the lyrics online!
Doris Day does not get much credit for being the great singer that she was. This tune shows how tremendous she was. Beautiful and moving.
She was fabulous. And not given the respect she deserved.
Great song, sung to perfection by one of the best vocalists of the 20th century.
Did you notice at the end, the little snippet from the trumpet of taps?
M.J. Leger Yes, it makes me think of people and pets that are permanently gone.
M.J. Leger. Well, Mr Donaldson wrote the melody but the lyrics were written by Mr. Khan.
In the Movie: "I'll see you in my dreams", they show Mr. Khan life.
Ms. Day played Mrs. Khan in that fillm. I recommend that you should watch that film.
Thank You for the Background... 😢
the last video I have of my grandparents is my grandmother singing this to my grandfather. They were killed in a car accident days later.
Thank you .... I first heard this song sung by Barbra Streisand back in the '70s and wondered if this was the same song. 🤩.. nice and relaxing
RIP Ms Day, truly an end of an Era
As always, when the crooning ladies or gentlemen from the golden era fills the air with soft romance, it's a pure joy for the soul and heart.
What a song, what a singer ! My maternal grandfather, a WW I Veteran, would cry, according to my late Mother, whenever Grandpa Blas heard this song.
I agree Nada - a great song by Doris. I don't really like much of today's music - but I'm not that young so .... ! I really love the music from the 40's and 50's. I was a kid in the 50's -- so I must have been born too late. Glad you enjoyed ... hope you have a lovely weekend !!
