    1970 My God what a year for Tull! The Isle of Wight concert and, wait for it, the Muic Hall in Aberdeen concert. I didn’t see the former as my folks wouldn’t let me go, but I was lucky enough to see the latter in my home town just after turning seventeen. It was unforgettable and as a bonus Procol Harem were the support act. 😎

    Life in one short song...52 years after first encountering this beauty on acid I am starting to '...slowly upstairs, faster down...' And yes after a long and sometimes tortuous night trip I looked at (not into) the sun and watched the sunlight do a magic dance on the leaves of a tree outside my window and thought, yes life is good...

    Being just shy of 64 and having an older brother who never seemed to mind taking me and my friend to shows i saw Tull the first time at a small theater in NJ just as Aqualung was being released! Six months later they sold out 5 shows at MSG we went to two of those shows with at least 25 shows to follow! Tull was always fantastic and they always had great warm up bands! Gentle Giant Rory Gallagher Robin Trower Uriah Heep! Always amazing shows! 😊😊

    Listen to the album version of ‘We used to know’ from 1:06-2:18 and hear the guitar solos of Hotel California. Listen to the whole song and hear the chord structure of Hotel California. Then listen to Hotel California after the lyrics end to hear the whole guitar solos of ‘We used to know’ repeated practically note for note.
    Two good songs but one Martin Barre should get credit on both!

Benefit then was released. Ian gets a sore throat. No Tull. Humble Pie played til sunup, great. 3rd time, still Benefit, get tix, some concert called the Shea Stadium Peace Festival comes together, Bill Graham closes the Fillmore, no Tull. Felder was not an Eagle at the time...
      Hmmm, though he knew Bernie for years before... Was through Bernie he joined the band. Some trivia here, In the 60's Don Felder's first band was with Stephen Stills, He met Bernie Leadon about the same time. He is one of the few who learned to play slide guitar from Duane Allman himself, In that early period Felder gave guitar lessons to Tom Petty I think. The Eagles brought in Walsh through Felder... and I can;t help wonder if they met through Duane Allman?

    BenDrnach, Tull is my favorite band, hands down, and I'm not even that much of an Eagles fan - though I respect them and love a good many of their songs - but I'd still have to say that Hotel California is head and shoulders a greater song than We Used to Know. Hotel was a bolt of lightning of creativity, close to Stairway in its development and build up, and the incredible guitar solo outro. Just my opinion. I hate the draw the wrath of my fellow 5 Star Tull Junkies! *ducks for cover*...

    I set out to prove that there were too many differences in the beginning rift but found that they are almost identical ...except for 1 cord.That said the arrangement of hotel's pattern is so much superior and the vocals so much more clear that if the rift was taken from Tull by Felder he improved it to such a degree that it cant be considered plagiarism.

      @WinkyWillyWee 9 років тому

      Kelly Kleinman Coincidence, I'm sure. There are only so many notes, so many chords, so many possibilities for melody and song structure. Why would gifted musicians steal from one another, intentionally? it makes no sense. It's not logical. Most of what is called plagiarism is more likely the cross-talk of creative minds, cross currents of imagination overlapping, absorbing, re-creating. There are real plagiarists, but those people are shallow individuals in the majority, not creative artists. IMHO.

    • @Kellykleinman1
      @Kellykleinman1 9 років тому +1

      Maybe, but I'll go with a variation on a theme based on the theory that they liked the chord progression and changed it slightly. The old saying is "Your idea is mine over time" and this tends to match well with songwriters. I'm sure it's unintentional sometimes but your point is very well taken.

    • @WinkyWillyWee
      @WinkyWillyWee 8 років тому

      +Kelly Kleinman You could very well be right, Kelly! Who's to know for sure? The mighty Zep is far and away the most "guilty" band when it comes to borrowing or outright stealing ideas - BUT, what Pagey and crew did with those ideas was amazing! I think Zeppelin might go down in history as the single greatest cover band, or band that took initial musical and lyrical ideas from other artists and built monumentally epic rock songs out of them. I just wish that Page and Plant would be upfront and admit to this, and give credit where credit is obviously due! What do they stand to lose? Nothing. What do they stand to gain? Everything! The continued respect of fans all around the world of their epic contribution to music and culture.
