    Ian and the boys- a pure genius ensemble. Innovative beyond the Eagles. Ian takes the high road, and simply lets it go. That's the mark of someone that senses where music emanates from.

    I clearly remember enjoying a Jethro Tull concert in Seattle with the Eagles as the supporting band. What a fabulous experience. Tull had just released Benefit and the Eagles had recently released Take it Easy, their first big breakout song. I was floored by Tull live and impressed by the banjo and harmonies of the Eagles. Linda Ronstadt was nowhere to be seen. The Eagles evolved from her backup band The Stone Ponies.

      I went to see Led Zeppelin in 1969 and the 2nd act was a band no one had ever heard of called Jethro Tull. They were just tremendous and blew everyone into the weeds. When LZ came out they were a let down (but still good). I always thought I remembered it wrong as LZ was one of my favorites of all time but I met a guy who also saw the tour (but in Texas) and he said Tull blew LZ off the stage there too. Only other time I saw as big of a blow off was Janis Joplin as 2nd act for Jefferson Airplane. The Airplane needn't have bothered to even come out on stage.

    There's nothing new around the sun
    Everything you think of has been done;
    All been done before your time;
    Sometime or another
    By someone and his brother, yeah...
    From the poison comes the flower
    Butterfly for just an hour;
    But it burns ecstatic fire,
    The kind of life we all desire..
    Desire...fire....

    thanks for putting this up - I was there and it brings back good memories. I'm still loving JT in their slowing down years and saw the TAAB2 concert in Cardiff. Sadly there was no Martin Barre and I'm thinking that there may not be another JT tour (as opposed to IA and MB doing their own thing, which isn't quite the same). But they were a fantastic band.

    There's one point that's being missed here! Don Felder first started working on this piece at his home in Malibu on a particular Sunday and recorded it to a drum machine. He wanted a reggae beat but the drum machine only had a cha cha beat. He recorded all the guitar parts and had a vision of him and Joe Walsh in a guitar duel in the instrumental section of the song. He recorded about 12 tracks to the tape and took it to practice the next day. The tape was played and Glenn Frey & Don Henley only took notice originally of this particular track with the Spanish feel. They bounced ideas off of each other and it was Glenn Frey who came up with a vision of someone driving through the desert during the night. Don Henley took it from there and wrote the lyrics that night. Don Felder recorded the song in Em. The key was too high for Don Henley so it was changed to Bm.
    Don Felder was not even in the Eagles when they supported Jethro Tull in the late '71 or '72. It is true that while Don Felder was living in Boston at that time he did go to one Eagles concert to catch up with Bernie Leadon and was introduced to the band backstage. At this concert they were the opening support act for "Yes". And Don Felder talks about seeing Yes in his book. No mention of Jethro Tull.
    I believe it's just coincidence. I don't think Don Felder had heard "We Used To Know". Glenn Frey & Don Henley would have heard it but they did not compose the music, Don Felder did! As Ian Anderson said, Anyone can grab a guitar and start strumming away and eventually come up with the same chord sequence.

    Oh and the only good thing about the Eagles was that Tim Schmit's (the bass player) dad, taught me how to play guitar. And a half a dozen years later, my classmate and English teacher formed the band, Steelwind. Then Craig went to the Starship. Reggie's uncle came and saw us. He was the man, The man from UNCLE. In 8th grade we played at a high school. Reggie went to the Grassroots. I went to Atomic Seaweed.

    In defence of The Eagles when they supported Tull and this song was being played Don Felder was not part of the Eagles. So he wasn't there to hear it. It is a well known fact that Felder wrote ALL the music to Hotel California around 1976 (even the bass parts). Henley and Fry added the lyrics to Felder's music. I don't see this being plagiarism at all - more harmonic progression. By the way - I am a massive Tull fan and not that keen on the Eagles but this comparison has always annoyed me because people don't fully know the back story

    ....the Steve Miller Band's 'Space Cowboy' has the same baseline as 'Lady Madonna' and Jackson Browne's' These Days' takes from the Allman Brothers' 'Please Call Home'. They are all worthy songs. Its interesting how you can get different feels from the same chord sequences.

Its a damn shame to find this out at this point but anyone with any kind of ear or music background has to look at the eagles a bit differently now. @bc1358 No I'm not kidding mate. It's a bit of a stretch to sound like Hotel California. Chord sequence may be the same, but take a listen to "25 or 6 to 4," "While MY Guitar Gently Weeps," and even "Geek Stink Breath." All three have the same descending chords but hardly alike in timing. "Hotel Cali" has more of a spanish style to its playing.

      TheWillowview The only people who know what Hotel California is about are Don Henley and Glenn Frey (and I suspect the other five Eagles), they deliberately write songs to be open to the listener's interpretation. Nonetheless, it is generally considered to be about the whole California scene and way of life back in the 60s and early 70s that they were enticed into, not so much about the music industry in general. As Henley says, it's about a journey from innocence to experience!

    The chords are the exact same progression except for the 7th which in the Tull song is a G flat instead of the a minor in Hotel california....no-one with the slightest musical ear can fail to realize that the Eagles plagiarized this from Tull or in the most favourable scenario to them Don Felder unconsciously was influenced. Since 1967 though the Eagles should have had the honestly to recognize the fact that HC is highly derivative and payed royalties...it really is a big disappointment!!!

    • @lukewise1227
      @lukewise1227 3 роки тому +1

      I personally believe the Eagles only credited Don Felder with composing the song to try to prevent a royalties argument. Sadly, age and wisdom has taught me that there is no such thing as honesty when big corporations (record companies), humans and very large sums of money are involved, even family members. At a very young age, starting a career in law enforcement, a wise old colleague told me 'Never trust a living soul... and walk cautiously around the dead ones'. 40 yrs later, l realise how true that advice was.

    Ok, it sounds similar. But The Eagles version was a smash hit. Maybe Jethro tull can ask Mr Fry and Mr Henly, The Eagles, to contribute a part of the Revenue of their hit song Hotel California to JT in the future. Glen Fry and Don Henley are well known as very "giving" persons. And I wonder if the Little guitar is the one invented by Alfredo Gil of Mexican famous Bolero Group Los Panchos?

    Ian Anderson took the high road. Most of the law suites over music plagiarism are just plain foolish. A court that knows nothing or little about music theory is passing judgement on just that. As Ian said, he takes it as a tribute not a theft. Sampling is a bit different, but that too has gotten beaten up too badly for the god of music in the courts. Most of these suits are the ideas of the lawyers, or greedy musicians that are no longer successful. A true shame and a black eye for music in general. If you "cover" a song, it's one thing, if some of the chord sequences are the same it is a different thing entirely.

      Agree Brian. If "copied," I would judge this to be coincidence. I do hope this stimulates sales of the lost Tull classic Album, as a whole.

    Eek, Ian's voice sounds crappy compared to his younger days. Plus he sings almost the whole song flat.
    Sorry, but the singing is awful.
