I didn't know my basil plants were still good after they flower!! I thought they were done for! Now I know just to cut them down & let 'em re-grow! Thanks Sara!
Your dedication to keeping your plants thriving despite the heat is truly admirable. Your ability to nurture and support your plants through challenging conditions reflects your exceptional care and commitment. And I am Floating Village Life.
Learning that basil is kept better in water is a game changer! No more wilty basil!
Chickens love basil and basil flowers. So when I have enough to share, i give my birds a treat.
OMG! I didn't even know that basil could grow that high! I think I will try to start it indoor next year!
I love basil.
Loved seeing the bees. I usually have a lot of pollinators but this year I rarely see one😢
Wow! So happy to see you on a Monday! Do not envy your weather, though.
Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint, ... Basil, Thyime ... Oregano ... Rosemary ... Marjoram ... Thyme ... Lemon Balm ... are all in the mint family.
All mint herbs -- LUV -- the sun and heat !!!!
When I pick off the basil flowers, I just eat them: garden snack!
I throw them on my tomato plants to ward off the tomato hornworm!
Your garden is so abundant!
Sarah I just have to say how much I love and look forward to your t-shirts. I’m sure you’ve been told before but I just had to say something. They are always so encouraging and uplifting. Positive and bright in messaging. I do love them so much!! Thank you for all that you do, even down to the clothes you wear. Blessings
❤😊
Thank you so much!!
Nice to see you this morning! Your basil looks wonderful. I'm going to sneak outside between thunderstorms and pickle some green beans today. 🙂
I would LOVE 60% humidity! At the moment, our FL humidity is 86%.
Your Basil plants are HUGE !!!
I've never grown cinnamon basil. Using it to make tea sounds like a great idea though. Thanks for the harvesting tips 😊
What an absolutely treat seeing you on a Monday! Have you tried Thai Basil? It’s our favorite basil and makes wonderful pesto
Thank you for explaining where to cut. Unfortunately I killed my basil a couple weeks ago by cutting too low!
Thank you dear Sister Sarah. Prayers. God Bless you all in Love. Maranatha ! ( shared to f/b )
I am 75 and loving the eight raised beds that I used this year. Sara, get some shorts on and make yourself comfortable. This heat is terrible.
I work in jeans for safety. ☺️
@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I don’t wear shorts for religious as well as safety reasons.
Bless you for the bee flowers!
Sarah, you are such a wonderful teacher! Thank you for all your hard work!!! I can't wait for more harvest videos! Those onions are looking gorgeous!!
Thank you so much!
. I have been burning through many of your videos, and really appreciate the depth that you go into in each topic. I live in cold and wet western Washington state. Is there a video in which you show how to start basil from seed and how to coax through until potting up? I have never been successful keeping basil or rosemary alive. Thanks so much!
Good morning Kevin and Sarah no joke. This heat is terrible for our plants as well. God bless you all.
Good morning!
Basil looks delicious. Thank you for sharing your information
Sarah I’m amazed how fast your garden has grown! Beautiful area. Congrats on all your hard work
I have never had good luck growing basil UNTIL I grew it in a greenhouse this year. I'm growing lemon basil, and it has been amazing. I will plant more next year. I'm just cutting it to dry and make into a powder for future casseroles, soups, etc.
Awesome content. Awesome instruction on growing a diversity of basil. 👍🏽
I was very pleasantly surprised to see a new video today!! The heat and humidity in Southern Ohio has been terrible with very little rain and not enough cooler days but not quite as hot as your weather has been!! I'm thinking about trying a small herb garden next year with the possibility of including basil!! Your raised bed garden looks fantastic and so much easier to maintain!!
Thank you for all the Basil information Sarah !
Your basil is amazing. Wish mine looked that good. Have never tasted pesto so may have to give it a try if my basil starts producing like yours. ❤
Huh? Yep, I checked the calendar and it is Monday. What a pleasant surprise.
❤️
Last week you asked for suggestions about plants for the herb garden
I suggested rhubarb. Rhubarb originated in China as a medicinal herb. The root was used for digestive health.
It is a perennial plant and is considered a vegetable. Most use it as a fruit and sells extremely well at farmers' markets. 💖
I would love to grow rhubarb but it’s too hot here.
@LivingTraditionsHomestead It's not about how hot it is. It's about how much chill time you get. There are some varieties that will grow in zone 8, so maybe you could find a good variety that will work in your area.💖
Nice basil plants those are beautiful
Hello ❤
Omigosh! 😲 i’m shocked at how large your basil plants are. Just harvested my genovese basil plants about a week ago. They were about half your basil size! But they were already starting to go to flower. I’m also in southern Missouri, and I have mostly clay soil and I think because my soil is crappy I’m not getting the size I should. Anyway, I thought I would pinch off the flowers and save them to make a little tea… waste not want not, right? Yeah, don’t do that. It tastes awful! Lol 😆
so happy for an extra video
Thank you Sarah for the great tips and information about the Basil! Especially the reminder that it makes wonderful tea. Blessings on your family and your homestead Kiddo! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
Morning
👍great video
great job Sarah. Great information too. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
WOW! Your garden looks awesome.
Thank you!
We've been so hot and humid in MN. 89 to 90 and 99 percent humidity must days. 🥴
Our basil started flowering way back in early June so we cut off every flower and they are still going strong and making amazing pesto! They are small trees now lol.
That's great!
Thanks for teaching us about basil.
Thank you! I had no idea what to do with my suddenly exploding Basil plants! This is so very useful, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all this. God bless you!
Wow nice basil lesson. Needed it. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the extra video👍🏻😊
This is so informative! Thank you for sharing! 🙏❤️👍🌱🌱🌱
Great video. Thankyou!
Great tips. I always learn something new from you. ❤️🙏🏻 Val C
Thank you for all the education Sarah
That makes so much sense. I was making it too hard. Thanks.
Sara, have you tried the Thai Basil iced tea; so delicious.
I haven’t! I’ll have to try it!
Thx
Really enjoyed watching 👍👍
When I use to grow Basil I keep all of it & dried it for using in cooking. Even when it went to flowers.
Down here in Ga ,I lost my tomatoe plants in the middle of july ,even they were all under a 40 percent sun screening, but i didnt get s harvest sonewhat early ,85 plants I had to pull but I always have spouts waiting inline under the grow lights ready to replant asap,,and i did .Now here in Ga we have a turn a round in our climate somewhat ,its still hot but lots of rain is exploding my plants to regrow for oct nov harvest again,,my pepper plants and cucumbers have exploded and continued to produce right on though the dry 2 month period we gone with over a 100 heat index everyday with no rain.. even wating the plants didnt help. They all dropped their flowers and that was it, in a week they were gone and they were big all near 5 to 6 ft tall,,now I have another bunch looking good with flowers again
My tomato plants aren't doing as well either but at least I'm finally getting some harvests and I have a little over two months left in the growing season!! Better late than never!!
That is incredible basil
A lot rain here lately in N. MN.. cool temps coming. We like that. Our Finnish blood. :)
THANK YOU!
I have been too timid with mine. We love it, so I will follow your lead.😊
I've never heard of cinnamon basil, but I love iced tea made from Thai (or Holy) basil. Your basil plants are incredible! Just lovely.
I'm surprised to see you on a monday. I checked my calendar to make sure I didn't have the wrong day. I love your videos no matter what day you share them
Yay! Thank you!
We dehydrate (or air dry) all of the cut plant (stems too) and then powder it all. The taste is amazing. We use the powder to make sauces for many main courses in our cooking. The stems taste just as wonderful as the leaves and help to produce gallons of pure basil powder over the course of the growing season.
❤I use all basils and flowers for homemade tea blends. I find the flowers make the tea sweeter and medicinally a more potent tea. 😊
How do you use the pesto on your keto lifestyle? I would love to see recipes that use pesto. Thanks for the video.
Pesto itself is keto. Served on any meat or low carb veggie is a great meal!
@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I will try it. Thanks!
That was a great video. I saw your unions too. They looked beautiful. Did you guys ever do a special video on growing unions?
We included the planting of them in our raised bed planting video. A harvest video is coming up. ☺️
Sarah, so happy to see your garden thriving. It is all that thoughtfulness and love you mix into the soil!!! Great info on using herbs to attract the pollinators. 🌸V
Hello, well i have never seen basil that big before, nor did i know you could leave it to grow that big. I have several pots on my window sill and always cut them after they reach about 6 inches but not anymore. I am going to let them grow and see what happens. Fantastic, i love your channel, always up for learning something new and being entertained. Thank you have a pleasant evening.
The tops you trim, we use for hot tea. The flowers are so beautiful and full of sweetness as it steeps in the hot water for tea. Especially if you use a glass tea kettle and cups. Enjoy!
Would like to see you making the basil tea.
Good afternoon! We love basil tea! I use the purple one. Ill have to try the cinnamon basil for tea❤
Everyone talks about basil getting bitter when it starts to flower. In my experience, a few flower stocks don't seem to make a difference. Now when it has a lot, yes they don't taste as good. I think the genomes basil would still have been good to use as it was on the 2nd pot.
is there a best time of day to cut basil plant? how do you make sun tea?
The best time is in the morning. Sun tea is easy! Just put the herbs in water in a glass jar and leave it in the sun all day. ☺️
I tried growing herbs this year in a large raised bed but im having a problem with birds. I had a bug net over the hoops on top and a bird keeps tearing a hole to get inside. I finally just tore everything out and covered the bed. Has anyone else have this problem? What can i do for my herb garden? I never had this problem before. Thank you
Maybe a whirly-ma-gig or scarecrow? Mylar strips scare birds as well.
I was distracted in the first part of the video by what I assume to be a pepper plant. If so it had the largest darkest leaves I've ever seen on a pepper. Could you show a close up of it and tell us what it is?
They are pepper plants. We’ll show them again soon. ☺️
Welcome to Florida lol
Great info, thanks for sharing!
I always grown basil to help disguise my tomato plants from the hornworm moth. I’ve always wondered though, if the disguising scent happens due to the leaves, or if it’s stronger when the basil flowers. Any thoughts? I always let some bolt, just in case. Either way, it seems to work.
I’ve never made pesto. Every year, I use some of the leaves to dry and crush and keep in my spice rack. This way, I can enjoy basil from my garden year round!
Hi Sarah, I am curious about the flowers you purchased from Walmart. Did they do well? Thank you for all your videos. I enjoy watching them. Linda from Vidalia, GA
Great tips! Thanks so much! One question though. Around 4:50 of this video you talk about washing them before making pesto. In your "Basil to PESTO, From Plant to Plate" video (1 year old) you say NOT to wash them. Which is correct?
Either is fine.
Hey yall !
Your video quality is awesome tonight !! Are you doing something different ?
Wow the plant are gaint or are you shrinking.🤔
👍❤️👍🙏🏼👍
❤❤❤ 🕊️
My transplanted basil is wilting- should I put it in shade??
Transplanting in the summer is hard on the plants. Just make sure it’s watered well frequently and it should recover.
Thanks so much!

My basil is bolting in So. CALIF. It's been Hot
Is it better to dehydrate or freeze dry herbs for long term storage?
Either way is great but freeze drying will last longer
Would you show us how you make pesto?
Question since yall are low carb how you use your pesto? I'm also low carb so I'm curious how you eat it without pasta. Your plants all look beautiful.
Awesome Basil tutorial!
My Basil has brown spots on its leaves all over...what would cause that?
Save the seeds. Maybe that's why none of my basil is very big, actually I don't think I fertilized it either, all I have done is water it. Thanks
💝💞💕💖
Why don't you do a video on what recipe you use for pesto???
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
👍
Speaking of bees, whatever happened to the hive yall used to have?
How many times can we say pesto and basil?
What do you use pesto for?
It is fantastic on most meats and steamed veggies! Pasta also but we don’t eat that these days.
Great! Thank you!@@LivingTraditionsHomestead
