I agree with the niche thing. Its easier to collect when you only pick up what you know or truly passionate about.

Yes man you always keep it real! That's why I never refer to anything in my collection as filler. If it's filler then it shouldn't be there. Only get the stuff you want.

100% agree with everything you said! I stopped talking/interacting with a guy I've known and been friends with since pre-school because he bought a GameBoy Micro and bragged about it to me. That lasted about a year, and we talked things out and are friends again. But you totally get it! Collect the consoles, and genres of games YOU like/want to play! Doesn't mean everyone else will like them! Oh and Viewtiful Joe is an absolute classic! HENSHIN A GOGO BABY!

This can be applied to probably any hobby. All of it drives the markets - and all the hobby markets are down right now. All the stuff that used to be outrageously priced are coming to more reasonable prices and even good deals in some markets.

I just like to collect the games I like, I'm not in it for fillers or games I don't really care about, started out trying to get my old games back and now just trying to get games I might have missed and never knew about, Just keeping it simple.

I agree and I must say I’m proud bc there’s tons of people that had told me about rpg or specially Jrpgs any of them and swearing by it. But I just couldn’t enjoy those games whenever I tried their demos. So far I have absolutely move away from them. However I know lots of friends who had bought games they don’t even like just because someone recommended them.

I have been collector for years, since a kid, only beacuse of being a physical games advocate. I bought only a tiny amount of digital games. UA-cam videos are fun to watch right now just to learn about games I never knew about. Sometimes you buy/play a game. You love it. But, you never realized there was a sequal / trilogy behind it until you watch a UA-cam video on collecting. Regarding whether there are million+ video games? Factoring the entire history of video games, I strongly believe it does go to 1 million+. Consider games that are exclusive not just the Japan only, but some Europe only games. Also consider that games like Tetris have had different versions distinctly different in how they play (NA versus PAL). If you counted all the versions + went all the way back to Text only adventure games and PONG.. You easily get to a Million.

It's important to distinguish between reality and entertainment. Channels like The Phoenix Resell, Chase After the Right Price, Retro Rick, and others are primarily entertainers, often seen as the next wave of Game Chasers. They face criticism for splurging on retro items and completing sets just to flip them for profit. A lot of their content is staged, and they often collaborate with other resellers to enhance their on-screen image while promoting their stores. Their fame gives them a certain credibility, but I think a lot of the rivalry stems from envy and jealousy. Unfortunately, many people don't realize they're just chasing something unattainable. Ultimately, it doesn't matter how many games you own, so it's best to tune out the distractions and focus on collecting what truly makes you happy, without letting others sway your choices.

they have zero credibility as this point. most of us realize they do this as a job and think they are celebrities, and alot of other delusional youtubers think they are celebrities and even pseudo gods, cause they cant say one false word about them cause they think they are youtubing gods.
Its a sick a community to the point where its why ive gone mostly emulation and barely collect and have tuned out of retro gaming as a whole. Alot of mental illness in their groups as well, if you really study these goes like phoenix resale and retro rick they all have the complexes that probably stem from their childhoods....the average person doesnt act like them.

Absolutely agree! I’ve always been the type to only buy games I’m interested in, especially when I got into collecting around 2016 (outside of just buying the new games that interested me) for the longest time I’ve basically only played Nintendo games. I only recently expanded into the PlayStation ecosystem and RPGs outside of Pokemon and Fire Emblem with the PS5 and I went out to find a backwards compatible PS2 to play PS1 & PS2 games. I’ve gotten to play so many cool games I probably wouldn’t have earlier such as MGS & MGS 2 and RPG’s like Persona, SMT Digital Devil Saga, and Xenogears. I wouldn’t be surprised if I downsize my collection a little as it’s growing a bit bigger than I would have thought it would have gotten (I think around 240 or so?) always gotta remember that there will always be new games I’ll look forward to in the future.

too many clout collectors out there with issues that are becoming a meme at this point...and they dont even realize it..but when you stand back and look at them, having $50,000 in video games is ultra cringe.

Unfortunately, i can't seem to "niche down," more like "niche out," lol! I've been a huge gamer since the 80s/early 90s, and i am fond of many genres and love obscure and popular alike. My tastes are truly eclectic, so i try to be an essentialist and curate what i see as the best, most obscure, and personal favorites, but with so many interests I've found my collection slowly growing over time. There was a time when i was young and dumb and would sell almost everything to get the new stuff, but i always regretted it later. Still haven't recollected everything I've sold off that i wished i hadn't, and much is unobtainable to me now. I've been lucky enough to find deals and have spent much time tracking down certain items, but it was all out of pure love and never just to "collect" or resell. Everything i bought is something i hope to play or have played and will continue to share with others. I've only sold a handful off in the past 15 years, and they were doubles. I do wish I'd have had enough $ to buy 2 of everything as an investment and left the unplayed stuff sealed, cuz it would've more than paid for itself, but you gotta have $ to make $, so my collection has been scrapped up and saved for and i hope to keep and play and eventually pass it all on to continue the joy of gaming as a hobby and lifestyle. I've slowed down buying for the last 3 years, especially retro, but im fairly satisfied with what i have. I could see adding another 200-300 games in the next 20 years, but I'd have to stop there. I feel like of my approximately 700 games from NES to PS4 pro, that I'd only consider maybe like 5% tops to be "filler." It might seem like a lot, but i think a tightly curated collection of around 1,000 games, spanning most generations on approx. 15-20 unique consoles is perfect imo. (Only around 3-4 consoles I'd still want). I don't have every niche console or even some of the major ones like SNES (i was always a sega fanboy), but I am happy with the ones I've got. You said it was "cringe" to own a $50,000 collection, but its been my hobby and entertainment for like 35+ years and i've enjoyed every minute and shared many great moments/memories playing them with/without others. I'm no "clout collector," and make no content about it. I'm not hoarding either, just because i don't wish to go digital or sell it off. The collection only takes up 2 book shelves and 3 dressers and easily fits around the edges of a small room/ in a closet. Also, I've never been well off and have managed to piece this together very slowly as permitted, and it hasn't really been a huge drain. I'll admit to forgoing something else here or there in order to obtain this or that but i've never let it affect me or over extended myself accept when i was much younger and chose games over healthier eating from time to time, lol! Anyways, hope yall continue collecting and playing what you love and find new discoveries that further your enjoyment of the hobby! Happy hunting, and Merry Christmas!
P.S.- Lately, I've been finding myself going a bit overboard on digital games, but i always wait for super deep discounts. This can make it easy to stack up games quickly, though I'm not sure if I'll ever play all the 1,000 games from psn on my ps3/ps4 pro, but i'm sure gonna try! A lot are small indie games that were dirt cheap and barely take up any space. Still out of the 1,000 games, I'd say only 5% are "filler." My interests in multiple genres and games i like are just that wide that i wouldn't consider hardly any of it fluff. I do my research before buying to make sure i know it's something I'll play and am really interested in owning. Peace.

@@hermes_job_observer144 hmmm wow bro huge response similar to me really passionate about this topic.
is your collection $50,000? I meant along the lines of the fake collectors/youtubers buying all this stuff cause A. they copy someone else they see and they have a hoarders illness or B. Are doing it for clout and dont really enjoy the games. then C. Lose hella money cause they have to sell off all the crap they bought to pay for a emergency or something then their "investment" ends up losing major money.
Ive enjoyed it all my life too playing retro games and that i grew up doing that of course, but where its at now and seeing people collect and it getting out of hand its like woah You/I have to make some sort of decision of what your really doing here buying all this $#@$ and tone it down and have control. Control is key. Saying No is key...alot of these youtubers blow so much money then they cant afford bills or complain about money. And then we have these other bigger retro youtubers teaching viewers "this is what you have to collect and buy all this crap to have rank and be a "proper collector". Then most of them have some sort of pseudo-mental illness or some mental problems they are trying to run away from or deal with and buying a S$#@ ton of video games is how they think they solve it in their mind. You know how many times ive said NO to myself buying gaming stuff recently versus buying it, probably 90% + . Alot of us are waking up and realizing WTF are we doing buying all this stuff? Addicted to nostalgia, addicted to doapmine hits..think its giving us some sort of status?
Its just really gotten to a point where its about everything but the games and gameplay, thats why people have shelves upon shelves of all this crap they justify it to themselves as a investment or insert whatever reason, and they never play the stuff. Then they try to trash emulation as "youll never play all those games digitally" well never will play them all physically either LOL.
