@Awc dude, you left out glamtera; at least it wasn't influential like the '90s crap. They became a band with good leads, drums, but awful groove riffs/shit songs. This band were detrimental to metal, but fortunately, it started to recover in the 2000s.
      1. Cowboys - essentially, an '80s album
      2. Power Metal

I'm very surprised that TGST is not higher on most lists. I never thought about a Pantera rank that much but I'm not afraid to say that to this day, TGST is my favorite with CFH as a close second. Imo, TGST has the best production, not too much not too least. Dime's guitar never sounded as great, his riffs are very groovy and this album has two of his best solos: Floods and 10s. The intro of 13 Steps is perfection just like the acoustic guitar on Suicide Note. And last but not least, Phil's lyrics are so dark man, soo deep. This is a very ominous and raw record, I adore it.
    1. The Great Southern Trendkill
    2. Cowboys From Hell
    3. Vulgar Display Of Power

I have a nostalgic connection to Great Southern Trendkill. Some dickhead at school jumped me and ended up kneecapping me and leaving me there... Over the course of that summer I listened to a shit load of Pantera at the gym doing physiotherapy and getting back on my feet!

My ranking is going to be all over the place but it's all a matter of personal preference anyways so here it is:
(I didn't listen to the first three albums enough to give any kind of review so I'll just skip them.)
    6. Power Metal - For it's time it's a good album. I can't really say that I'm a fan of the 80's sound but the guitar solo on We'll Meet Again is one of the best solos I've ever heard in my life, seriously, it's beautiful. I understand why Philip eventually moved away from this vocal style but I'm glad he has this in his repertoire. It's insane to me that this is the same guy that would latter deliver the vocal performance in a track like Slaughtered. He's insane and I mean that as a compliment.
    5. Far Beyond Driven - Just because it's this low on the list doesn't mean that I don't love it or that I don't think it's a good album - it's a fantastic album but I love the other 4 more, so here it is. For some reason I never got hooked on 5 Minutes Alone but I absolutely love I'm Broken and think it's the strongest song on the album. It's blasphemous to say this but their cover of Planet Caravan is better than the original and it's placing on the album is just perfect, after you get smacked around by the intensity and heaviness of the album you listen to Planet Caravan and it feels like catharsis.
    4. Reinventing the Steel - I don't understand why people seem to dislike this one so much. Pantera ended their career on a high note and putting I'll Cast a Shadow as the last song of the last album.... there's just something so poetic about that, they really did cast a large shadow over the metal world after they left. Me writing this 20 years after the release of RTS, and I was only 3 years old back then, is proof of that. The riff in Revolution Is My Name is insane and the first time I heard that song I instantly thought of Black Sabbath.
    3. Cowboys From Hell - Oh, I love this one. This was the first album of theirs I ever listened to and the reason I fell in love with them. I know this was Pantera just getting started and I know it's still in part reminiscent of the 80's, but they took the best of the 80's and put it in there while at the same time foreshadowing what they were going to do later on in their career. Cemetery Gates is a timeless classic, you can't change my mind on that.
    2. Vulgar Display of Power - This is the ultimate Pantera album, the one they will be remembered for, the one every metalhead, be they fans of Pantera or not, must know. There's nothing more for me to say about it. This Love is one of the greatest metal ballads ever written.
    1. The Great Southern Trendkill - This is probably the most divisive Pantera album as I've seen people either say they absolutely love it or they just never got into it. I'm in the first group. I don't necessarily think it's their best but it's my personal favorite. This is the darkest, grimmest, rawest, most emotional material they ever put out there. I can't imagine the reaction of people who first got this back in '96 when they heard that 10 seconds long scream on the opening track. Floods is a masterpiece. 10's is so vulnerable you can clearly hear Phil Anselmo was going through personal hell. And then there's Suicide Note Pt II, the first time I heard it I thought it was horrendous but then it creeps up on you and gets under your skin. That is the angriest, most emotional song about depression I've ever heard, now it's one of my favorite Pantera songs. I also love how this album was basically a middle finger to the mainstream scene at the time and there isn't a single song on it that could be played on the radio.
Sorry for making this 5 miles long. If you got to this point I just wanna say I'm jealous of your glorious hair.

Vulgar and Far Beyond Driven also came out when I was still in college and I was blown away by these albums. Before Vulgar (and the Black Album) I only listened to Whitesnake, Def Leppard and mostly hair metal bands but Pantera introduced me to a heavier type of music. I still love my hair bands to this day but also heavier stuff too.

Cowboys is my nostalgic favorite, as it was the first album to really introduce me to them, and Reinventing will always stick out in my mind because it had the first Pantera song I learned to play from beginning to end, solos and all (Revolution). BUT, I must say my friend, I agree with your ranking, with Far Beyond and Vulgar going either way, depending on what I'm really in the mood for being the only thing to rerank them on any given day which is a really poor way to determine objectivity, lol. I love both Glamtera and PANTERA. It was evident from the start, they were a solid act, they were just young so it shows in their early records but they achieved a lot fast once they chose their direction. Dime was an amazing player ever since the 1st record and all the old fanzines would mention this. What's unique about PANTERA is they went from Glam/Hard Rock to defining Groove Metal (and somewhat metal core?) and dominating the 90's, like usually bands get less heavy. One of the greatest Metal bands for sure, shame things ended the way they did...

Yeah, I'm the reverse in that I think their desire to be heavier undermined the more interesting melodic stuff from Vulgar. I'm less of a fan on some of the weaker tracks like Throes of Rejection,& Use My Third Arm,& if We skip over Good Friends,..its a bit shorter listen. Phil wrote Broken( which is one of the best Tracks on the LP) because of his bad back,& him self medicating,...I think a bit of that shows on the creative side. Thanks 4 Doing This.

    My Pantera ranking:
7-9: The 3 Terry Glaze albums. I always viewed these as more of a Judas Priest(Defenders/Painkiller meets VH(Romeo Delight vibe), mixed with all their other influences.
Truth be told, if their father wasn't who he was, and they didn't have access to the equipment and studio and such, these would have been demos. They were kids developing their style, imo.
6: Power Metal: The bridge from the first 3 to what they became. A higher quality than their 1st 3. But with Phil, this was still like borderline their polished demos with Phil's influence.
    5. Reinventing the Steel. Several standouts. I like that they cut back on the total track listing, in an era when everyone was stuffing CD's with 12-14 tunes.
I may like the remix/remaster sound better. Plus the disc compiling all those great soundtrack cuts was fantastic.
    4. Cowboys. Half of the tunes would be worthy of the top spot(Domination.......fuuuuuuck), but half diminish it a bit(a bit, this is a solid album with some spectacular parts).
Top 3 are very difficult to rank, kind of 1a,1b and 1c
    3. Vulgar Display. First half and last couple of songs great. Nothing wrong with beginning of side 2, but the track listing was kinda dumb, cuz those couple of tracks were soo similar in tempo and vibe. Better track listing prolly makes this an A+.
    2. Far Beyond Driven. To have a deep track like Shedding Skin, 25 years, Hard Lines.....daym, as well as 'hits' like becoming, 5 minutes and I'm broken' like
1). Trendkill. Drier sounding, less stuff to make mtv or rock radio at the time. But also deeper, more serious/less cock-rockish.
    I'm splitting hairs here.

My own ranking (as a preface, at a base line, even the lowest album is at least a 7.5/10, which in my book is above average. I'll also only list the one's I've fully listened to)
    5. Reinventing the Steel
-This album is actually way better than people give it credit for. It's only #5 because I have to have a #5 slot. It's a shame Hellbound is only 2 or so minutes long.
    4. Cowboys From Hell
The standout songs are Cowboy's From Hell, Domination, and Cemetery Gates. This actually has some of my favorite Dimebag solos ever, Cowboy's From Hell probably being my favorite solo by him.
    3. The Great Southern Trendkill
Suicide note parts are both great. Drag the Waters, 13 Steps, War Nerve being my standout songs
    2. Far Beyond Driven
A masterpiece of an album, but I feel it lacks some of the qualities Vulgar display. The standout songs to me are Im Broken, 5 minutes alone, Hard Lines Sunken Cheeks.
    1. Vulgar Display of Power
My favorite album from them, it's vulgar and unapologetic, my standout songs are Walk, Mouth for War, This Love, Rise, A New Level, Fucking Hostile.

why cowboys is my number 1? read below.
Cowboys is a super classy metal album, a golden metal statement from the 90s.
this is to me the album where pantera showed to the world who they were. I remember listening
this one for the first time in 1992 and blew my mind.
darrell: his guitar playing is genius, showing all his trademark sounds and crazy harmonic abilities
and also his trademark heavy distortion and amazing riffs.
I mean , just listen to primal concrete sledge, is there a better way to start a metal song? that power chord
at the begining sounds like a thunder.
psico holiday solo is the shit!
phil; his voice is raw and powerful with an amazing range.
rex: bass is solid, almost perfect.
vinnie: same as darrell, this album put vinnie on the map.

    7) Reinventing the Steel (2000)
    6) The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)
    5) Projects in the Jungle (1984)
    4) I I Am the Night (1985)

Pantera was the soundtrack to my teens and early 20s. Nothing could have beat them in my opinion. Now that I’m older, I’m not big on the groove sound anymore. I’ll actually take the 80s albums over Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven nowadays.

Used to see Pantera at Texas clubs in the early eighties. They would do a set of their music then some covers, usually Metallica. People liked their own stuff but lost their mind watching “Diamond” play Metallica riffs. They had to notice and know where metal was going. I was surprised it didn’t happen after “Projects…”

I got into Pantera when I heard the Cowboys from Hell album, way back in high school when it was first released. A friend of mine had it playing on a boombox in the high school Cafeteria.. The opening riff to Cowboys from Hell was fucking mind blowing then and even to this fucking day! That being said, Vulgar Display of Power is my favorite Pantera album. My album rankings are a bit different. Here they are: 6. Power Metal 5. Far Beyond Driven 4. The Great Southern Trendkill 3. Reinventing the Steel 2.Cowbous from Hell and #1: Vulgar Display of Power. I'm sorry but Far Beyond Driven is ok. Yeah I'm broken, 5 Minutes alone and Becoming are great songs and my 3 favorites off the album, but the rest doesn't do it for me. Plus, I think that's when Phil started doing heroin so lyrically I don't think he shined. With that being said, Pantera hasn't put out a terrible album. Just my opinion.

Such a difficult choice which way round 2 and 1 should be, so close to putting TGST at 1 but VDOP just takes it, all the classics are on there Walk, Mouth for war, a new level, this love, rise, fucking hostile , hollow….. so I had to go with it but trendkill is a masterpiece as well( as are all pantera albums), i love this album as it’s so heavy in parts then songs like 10s and Suicide note part 1 are just really soulful deep songs…..drag the waters is one of my fav pantera songs ever, suicide note pt 2 is an assault on the senses, war nerve and sandblasted skin are such crunching riffs…… but vulgar speaks for itself….RIP Dimebag and Vinnie x

GS Trendkill grew much more on me than Driven did, even though FBD is amazing. Cowboys is great but I don't dig the Rob Halford screams. When it comes to speak about VDOP, that shit is so perfect, that created a subgenre called Groove Metal and tons of bands started to play like that. That's what I think Vulgar is #1.
    Vulgar
    TGSTrendkill
    RTSteel
    CFH
    FBD
    The rest.
