Stomptalk - Removing Auralex Soundproofing Panels Safely From Walls

  • So I did research and it seemed like few had a good solution for how to do this, but I found one. Couple things I left out:
    -I'm pretty sure the adhesive was Auralex Foamtak.
    -The sandpaper sponges that I use, they're gonna get gunky overtime, so you'll need to wash them often.
    -The liquid I spray is Kleen Strip Mineral Spirits
    Let me know if you have any questions.

    Another tip. Don't use the scraper to remove the pads. Get a hairdryer (not a heat gun because you'll melt the pads and possibly start a fire). Gently grab a corner of the pad and put the hairdryer on high speed high temp and pointed towards the angle between the pad where it meets the wall. Maintains sustained pressure while continuing to heat the area. It will slowly peel away from the wall leaving just the glue residue, and will make it much easier to clean using the mineral spirits..

    hey if you wanna prevent this next time just spray adhesive the foam to cardboard or something else then tape the cardboard to the wall so when you move again or wanna take it down just pull it off and there is much less mess left behind

      Ultima Haxor I actually found a good video that suggested applying with indoor double sided foam tape (the same stuff that 3M use for removable Wall hooks). I'm on week 4 and not a single tile has moved. And obviously the tape is meant to be removable. It's more expensive than spray glue, and you have to push it onto the foam 1st on a flat surface but it holds really well.

    You kind of glossed over the materials (the word mineral was hard to hear) so Klean Strip Mineral Spirits is what was used in this video in case anyone is wondering. :-)

    I bought a 70's house where the previous owners decided to wall the bathroom with foam bricks that were adhesives to the wall. Now I'm left with a bunch of foam and a sticky mess... thanks for your video. I planned on re-mudding and painting once complete so the mineral spirits will be the least of my concerns.

    I am in the process of doing this now. To save time, saturate the foam that remains on the wall after removing the panel. Wait about a minute. Use the scraper and it will peel off the wall as if you were shaving it. Then wipe with the rag. You don't need to do all that sanding.

    I dont own a house but i bought apartament recently. The Room is covered with a strange sponge - someone wanted it to be an acoustic/ noises reducing sponge but it’s not a professional one. It looks like a sponge used for coats to make it warmer or a shoulder pads in jackets ? It’s dripping, it’s falling apart , it’s turning into dust and falls over everywhere ! I have no idea how to remove this omg 😮😢 and after paying all the taxes and legal papers I can’t afford any professional repair and I don’t know what to do 😢

    What about that if we want to remove old glues from the back of the panels themselves??

  • @kevinmccarthy4088
    @kevinmccarthy4088 7 років тому

    I had this problem with an old place and it struck me as peculiar that accepted practice was to spray tack on the foam and the wall or, especially, the ceiling. This left a hell of a mess but fortunately the entire place was to be renovated so cleaning wasn't an issue when we moved on. I've since moved into a new space that I need to now treat and am planning to add a level of 'indirection' as it were - get some cheap thin board, cut them into desired sizes, screw into wall, or better, into studs/joists, then spray the tack onto the boards and foam. When I need to remove the treatment, I can then remove the screws holding the boards from the walls/ceiling. At that point all I need for cleaning is to spackle the screw holes and paint the walls/ceiling. Certainly would seem to be a lot less work then this is and make for a cleaner solution.
    Can anyone give me an idea why this wouldn't be a better way then tacking directly?

    I don’t know what kind of crazy black glue i used, but it’s not even coming off with the white spirit sprayed over it... Just some bits come off, but most of the stains just remain...

    what would be a non permanent way in installing the foam to the wall that can be easily removed without any foam sticking to the wall.

    • @StatusMusicDesign
      @StatusMusicDesign  8 років тому +1

      What I've done since this video is buy cheap poster frames that match the dimensions of the foam. For example, a 24 x 36 inch poster frame can hold six 1'x1' foam squares in a 2x3 pattern. Glue the squares to the posterboard. Hang said posterboard. Repeat. Boom.

      I used long T pins from the craft store. Box of pins for under $3. Worked fantastically and wasn't visible to the eye.

      I bought 4 by 8 2 inch thick foam insulation panels from home depot and used t pins to attach the sound squares to it. Hung them an inch or 2 from the walls. Now the back traps sound and the front defuses it. Inexpensive and easy...

      Adhesive the pads to cardboard then hot glue them to the wall

  • @gabrielaaron
    @gabrielaaron 5 років тому

    How do you get take them off the soundproofing off in order to get to this point. It feels like they are going to rip when I pull on them

    • @StatusMusicDesign
      @StatusMusicDesign  5 років тому

      Use a putty knife or any sort of scraper that won't mess up your wall. Go slow. Lift up an end and slowly pull as you scrape. You will lose some foam to the wall and they may tear slightly on the back, but unless you SOAKED the panels in glue, they'll still be usable.
