To answer a couple of questions....the button on the steering wheel is the line lock, which is used to lock the front brakes as the burnout procedure begins and also to assist in staging the car. The clutch is only used for staging; planetary transmissions don't require clutching between shifts. And this is a pre-EFI car (they're rpm-limited), meaning he's shifting at around 11,000 rpm. Quite a feat for a 500 inch big block.
This transmission is not a planetary (old school Lenco style). It's like a regular 5 speed dog box, except it has 2 cluster gears, and tapered dog engagement to only allow for shifting up gears and not down. The controls are pretty similar with reverse using a different lever, but this transmission is like a conventional transmission laid on it's side and woth another cluster gear on the other side of the main shaft.
I actually got a rare opportunity this past season to help the John Gaydosh pro stock team when they came to Houston. I've been following the sport for 20+ yrs so I had a bit of an idea what goes on to make those cars run but I wasn't prepared for just how much work it is lol. Basically what you saw those guys doing....pulling the transmission and clutch, swapping out rear gear ratios, rotating the tires....it's fun but a lot of hard work. Memories I'll never forget
Much respect to Dave River and family. Always polite at the Ozark Mountain Super Shifters races. Hope to be able to the same thing one day, run with the big boys.
That's what's up that's my division...Bad to the Bone, my first trip to the tracks... i was 9 years old and I'm 63 now...the sound of the Roller Cam, hook me
andrewt248 -- In the carbureted days which this was they redlined around 11,500. New era fuel injected NHRA make them have rev limiters at 10,500 RPM. One of the reasons they are slower than the carburetor years.
+Eric Pellerin It is a line-lock for the brakes so he can have is foot in on the clutch and the other slamming the throttle to the floor (basically to keep the car from rolling through the beams). He will pre-stage, build up pressure in the brakes, push the line-lock button on the steering wheel, stage the car, and then he will release the clutch and line-lock at the same time to launch. They make it look easy, but there is a ton of things going on all at one time.
We have to pull the transmission ( to possibly change gearing), we need to disassemble the clutch and regrind the surfaces, possibly change the 3rd member gearing, pull valve covers and check springs/valves between every round/pass
the sound of a pro stock engine is music to my ears!
R. Hernandez
theater of pain... best crue album in my opinion
I’m a pro stock, pro mod, and top fuel is music to my EARS “sigh”

How is he only steering with one hand on the wheel though. That’s a lot of damn hp.
2:41 the sound of the gear change is so satisfying to my ears.
Love the shots of the crew. Most people have no idea what goes into getting these ready for the next round. :-D

I do. First hand. It’s a lot of thrashing to hurry up and wait! Then back again.
I'm amazed at the precision, both on the track and in the pits. Thanks for sharing this Jeff.
One of the best inside pov of a pro stock. Thanks for sharing 😊
He makes that look easy. Thanks for posting.
It's amazing how much money you'll spend for that short moment and how much more you will spend to make the moment shorter
For everyone on the line it’s short but when your in the drivers seat is like your driving for hours

Reminds me of the 2 lane blacktop ending for a minute there .. Awesome clip
That reference tho. 👍
I get Goose bumps every time I watch this!!!
Would be a lifelong dream to drive one of these monsters, even detuned to 8:50 would be a thrill of a lifetime. Thanks for the video.
Prostock is the best! The sound of the highest revving V8's coupled with five, lightning-fast gear changes cannot be beat! Love this class!!!
2:41 back to the future.
Bad. Ass. I think Pro Stock dragsters are the best sounding cars on the planet.
COUGHTOPFUELCOUGH
It's not a dragster so yea
jetstream01 Its just pro stock
Just once I'd like to be able to do this, once...
You made it??
0-60 in 0.7 seconds? Totally AWSOME!!!
now that's a gooooood sound
I miss this :(
Wow. thank you for this video.
That's what's up that's my division...Bad to the Bone, my first trip to the tracks... i was 9 years old and I'm 63 now...the sound of the Roller Cam, hook me
What's he shifting at, like 9500 RPM? Freaking killer.
+andrewt248 add another 1000 to that
andrewt248 -- In the carbureted days which this was they redlined around 11,500. New era fuel injected NHRA make them have rev limiters at 10,500 RPM. One of the reasons they are slower than the carburetor years.
more like 11000
Great Shifting - screw automatics.
Ahh the smell of clutch discs in the morning!
Still one of my favorite car/drivers. Could be a bit bias because im local. But still the coolest paint job out there.
Wow amazing drag race bro
That dude's sideburns are killer
Love the burnout shift! Badd ass!
I remember when pro stock was factory cars. Sox and martin, bill jenking, nickelson and others.
Holy fuck that shifting
The charge right here, Awesome
Dang, that happens fast!
awesome
I've always wanted to drive a pro stock car. It just seems so different to driving any other drag car out there.
Love to hear her rpm great video
Awesome video
Me leaving family reunions be like.. 2:40
That is the baddest. Ever.
love that 1st thru 4th shift in the burnout...
it was second thru fifth...
Idk drag racers too well but does he not have to use his clutch when he shifts?
no it's a liberty 5 speed clutchless trany
no it's a liberty 5 speed clutchless trany
no clutchless tranny
This stuff is the bad boy of bad boys. 2:40
Excellent.
what are those switches at the top for?
+Acolis Main Power, Fuel Pump, Ignition, Starter, Fan
wait how was he shifting if he did use the clutch to do it
I'm curious, what's the button on the steering wheel?

+Jeff Huber thanks
Could be the line lock for staging the car.
A momentary switch to keep from rolling out of staging beams.
Damn that's fast! My turn?
After the burn out what is he reaching for with his left hand?
Luis Melendez the parachute.
If that is so what is he reaching up for and pulling with his right hand as he goes thru the finish line lights? That appears to me to be the chute...
He just drops his left hand and his right hand probably turned on water pump
The transmission doesn't have a conventional reverse, so he's activating a separate reverser to make the car go backwards
awsome!
Oh shit that was fast
Por que desmontam o carro todo depois?
We have to pull the transmission ( to possibly change gearing), we need to disassemble the clutch and regrind the surfaces, possibly change the 3rd member gearing, pull valve covers and check springs/valves between every round/pass
good ride
was his dad driving?
thats what i call multitaskin
How many gs is that I wonder
ua-cam.com/video/N9HBfSQmv7c/v-deo.html
Woah! Nelly
Way badass
great sound and visual, but really ruined it by putting the slow mo in the run!!!
Did not even go clutch that's how fast he is shifting
+Dieselpunk 87 sequential shifter
Has nothing to do with speed. That's how those transmissions work.
Clutchless tranny, only uses in to first gear with lever.
Liberty transmission. After launch the clutch is never used again unless you have a problem on the run and need to shut the car down....
Wow
Driver name ?
Dave River was the driver, his son Robert now drives this car.
THAT River car has NO airbags!!!
Talk about some Transmission..
หรอยๆ
:D wow!
Makes me nervous. Always looks like a crew guy is going to get hit
I think he could avtually beat me in a race.
2:42
Fantastic video except for that awful annoying slow mo section. Not cool.
too bad they went efi!!!!!
FUCKING WICKED!!!!
His sin an aeroplane.
It is easy. All you do is stage in and pull the lever back and forth 3 times and then pull the shoot. The team does the rest....lol
awesome
Wow
awesome
