On my competition cutting knives I usually use a primary cutting edge that is sharpened at 15° per side or 30° inclusive. However on these knives the edge thickness has a distal taper
Damn, looks pretty good :) I was thinking straight razors when i saw the first four on the left :D don't feel like sending one to the UK? :P Try batoning with them, it will test how much force they can take from the spine to the edge, some steel will warp at the core, so the core is too hard and will split. Whilst a good chopper needs to have a soft core to absorb the shock, blacksmiths used to heat treat the edge but temper the rest of the blade, making for a hard edge and flexible core which is why a longer sword wouldn't shatter. Not sure if this would be a factor in such a short blade as a chopper but in a larger blade yes.
Minimum free time? You act like you're in school or something... Very interested in this. Those Japanese style knives from the drops are really cool, especially the larger one. Looking forward to hearing how the testing goes. I wonder how many people realize how important it is that you do the tests though. So many makers grab a new steel and start selling it but aren't even sure how it performs. Oh well. Did you split the stock? Those drops look thinner than the comp cutter.
Lol, I'm not very good at jokes. I know he is in school. I just think it's funny he does that (which is no small time requirement) and turns out a decent amount of blades and presumably has a personal life as well because I'm no where near as productive with a lot more free time on my hands. Hell, sometimes I can't even sharpen a knife well let alone make on :)
C amber Your joke was fine! :) I just didn't get it haha... but yeah I know what you mean -it is VERY impressive how much work some people produce with little time. I work in a very inefficient way -so that translates to getting less stuff made!
xXxCatsnakexXx I hear you there man. It does'nt help that I can't multitask at all and I have a very low tolerance for frustration. I give up too easy.
Well most studies show that multi-tasking just means doing several jobs at once poorly; rather than breaking things down into a logical sequence and giving them the time they deserve: so don't be too hard on yourself! ;) As for the frustration... I hear you. Blade smithing an be quite heartbreaking at times...
steel deffo is a science - facinating
cant wait to hear back from the testers
nice work & thanks for sharing
Definitely a fascinating video. Great thoughtful approach. Looking forward to you sharing the results.
Very cool, I am looking forward to seeing how this works out.
The more I use AEBL the more I like it. I like grinding it and I like its performance.
Very nice! I'd totally buy one of those straight razors.
Very cool testing Dan. I have heard Vanadis 4 is good steel. how thin do you normally take the edges on the competition cutters?

Really curious to hear your thoughts on this after this time.
Have you used 4V, curious if you saw any difference in use.

What's that big blade in the upper right? Great grind.
So the V4E is tougher than 4v or M4 in competition choppers?
Very nice video! Where do you buy the steel ?
Dan,
what is the measurement behind the edge on your comp cutters?
thanks!
have you done an update video for this vanadas 4 extra?
Are there any updates you could share with us?
I have been searching and searching for a supplier of vanadis 4E. Where do you obtain it from?
In your opinion which steel has the best properties to be made as cutting competition blade? PD1, M4 or Vanadis 4E?
My primary blades for this cutting season is Vanadis 4E.
Both PD1 and Van 4E are able to run thinner and harder than CPM M4

I think he means running his own business... -you're never off the clock!

Mr. Keffeler, Where do you buy the Vanaids4E? Have you messed with Z-Wear? Thanks
That is basically a less alloyed M4 steel.... probably a little tougher....
