This may be out of context, but Flying Lotus is a musical genius.
amen
Never out of context. It is an omnipotent fact.
this needs to be said more often, respect
And Pharell tryna sound good for the youth
💯
I came here to hear Flying Lotus talk. Pharrell is cool though.
Everytime i see this i remember how og maco said he hated bitch u guessed it and was drunk when he made it. then pharell is advocating for it and doesn't know that.. what a oblivious business man
@@dolphinbeta514dude no one has a firm grasp on what other people will like about themselves… ur just lookin for ways to discredit ppl
Almost 4 years later, and Pharrell is spot on. We're now in 2021 and everything has evened out. Lyrical rap is doing fine and so is vibe rap
This is an OUTSTANDING music conversation
+Corey Staub Glad you enjoyed!
pharrell has the right perspective. attitude of a true artist. keep an open mind, don't be so rigid on any standard of music because any limitation is counter productive in what makes great art.. flylo is a living legend because of his unique sound that separated him from the popular group, and to do that you need to disregard the user manual and allow yourself to veer and venture off for a bit.
scott vener isnt even attempting to understand what pharrell is saying. in the late 70s disco took over because people just wanted to feel good, and eventually it was crushed by punk and new wave and experimental music. thats exactly whats going to happen today with the feel good party music. despite this, you can still have a good time with disco, and you can have a good time with new radio music. culture shifts and changes naturally, and like pharrell said, the only thing we can do is be appreciative of the fact we live in a diverse, rapidly shifting time in music.
altho if you look into that disco burning thing, a lot of it was fueled by racism. take a look into it.
Lmfao Pharrell knows he keeps all the magical beats to himself.
Nah he's hating on them he doesn't have no Magical beats
@@pouponboy6330pink + white exists
From a genuine fan of conversation, Scott and Pharrell have beautiful connection when it comes to talking about music. Bringing The Magic and the Science of music together to explore the beauty on both sides, while keeping their Individuality. I think thats the essence of Duality.
+CREATIVE Crossover 100% agreed, thanks for tuning in!
I love that you guys are so positive about all this change. Accepting and embracing change is the key to life, if you ask me. Keep it up guys.
+Harry Verolme (TPT) Great point about change there, thanks for tuning in!
+Philip Clouds looooool what? Could be man, I have no clue. Surely he meant it in a different way than I did! :p
THEM GLASSES ARE FIRE P
Type of music style never dies! History repeats itself. As Pharrell was saying, "It is about change", but we don't have to let anything die. Like Prince music will continue to live forever in someone's Vinyl, disc or Itunes. I believe there will be a surge of underground rappers who will hit those flows and beats including producers. We see old trends come in style already but I don't want to lump genre of music into a "trend." We just have to be open to celebrate the old, today and future. I'm an oldie when it comes to music. All this started with my Pops playing 8 tracks and vinyls of 70s music like Al Green, EW&F, Marvin Gaye, etc.
+lifejourney2bnatural 👏 👏 👏 👏
iamOTHER Thank you! I really enjoy these round table discussions.😊
The point is there will never be an other Prince :)
Pharrell is quite perceptive.
Wow Lotus is so much chilled out than I thought he'd be. His music is so amazing I just thought he'd be more serious.
Haha really? He was pretty much everything I expected but better & more charming
I'd imagine he'd be as chill as his beats
Completely unrelated but i'm reeeaaally digging FlyLo's hair right now
right!
+Ian Haskell For real, and his skin looks smooth too lol
lmao man, he's doing something right.
He's got that been hiding in the studio hair. New album (or captain Murphy?) this year
October can't come fast enough man
I know the first time I heard On Sight and New Slaves and Black Skinhead my entire worldview changed of what was possible in music. I will revisit those songs in twenty years and remember how groundbreaking that sound was.
+Anthony Recenello I agree. But they aren't talking about THOSE songs haaha
wasn't this meant to be a flying lotus interview ?
I was really looking forward to hearing what FlyLo was going to say, but he was never given the chance to fully express himself...
Seems it was more a Pharrel interview then a Flying Lotus interview.
Seems like that's just how Steven is. He isn't very opinionated.
Go listen to the full pod not just the clip lol
I totally see Pharre;'s POV but there is def a watering down of artists not just in hip hop but in music. every time less artists play their instruments, write their songs and make timeless music.
+V a l n s k y
he cant admit it because hes been part of it / is friends with tons of people in that part of the industry. it's one thing to say music's subjective and another extreme to say there's no quality difference, everything is just equally good without qualification.
Scott Vener talking about "true music fans". Man, the fact that its not "true" to him does not mean it cant be true to someone else.
I've never really heard Pharrell speak his mind. He just so concisely and calmly rebutted Vener's commonly-held view on current music. I just thought he was another power vocalist in the industry - but holy crap the mans a musical SAGE.
Scott needs to listen to more music.
for real
I see both sides of the points, I love it. I love the fact that they're even having this conversation! Just wish FlyLo put more input into the convo! Main reason i clicked on this shit lol
+itsswizzy21 I want to watch flylo talking about how he cooks up his crazy music
Flylo always has something interesting to say, but pharall kept interupting him, kinda killed the the whole convo.
How is Pharrell not 19 years old?
LMAOO how come you don't have enough likes !!
I feel like Flylo has the potential to reach out to the mainstream in the future. Every album he's put out has gotten bigger and bigger every time, attracting more artists to work with him like Snoop Dogg, Thom Yorke and Herbie frickin' Hancock! He's doing this while still staying fresh with each project and appealing to a wider audience. I say this as a Flying Lotus fan but to me, he seems to be growing the way an artist should grow.
He's in a bit of a limbo at the moment, not underground but not quite mainstream either. But i think he could eventually go all the way and leave an impact on the future of mainstream Hip Hop.
5 years later and he has a netflix show ::)
He has a Netflix show and Grammy!
I think the interviewer could stand to listen more
Agreed. the interviewer was not a listener.
Indeed
I don't think its supposed to be a traditional interview. it is meant to be a conversation, not just a Q&A session.
Possibly. But the facial reactions from being cut off mid-sentence didnt look welcomed to me lol...
its a snippet
pharell got that knowledge man
Bro i did not relate to Pharrell. Hes just a clout chaser never made anything original
FLYLO is such a fucking visionary, talking about TIKTOK on 2016, saying how music will be make and advertised for the 15 seconds it gets on TIKTOK
Also he went in talking about Lil Pump (10000% who he was thinking of) LOL
this was really good, love how positive pharell and lotus view things
Pharrell being a star of 2000s is so up to date right now! He just moves forward!!!
I feel like Flylo is right on this one. He doesn't get to speak much, but when he does, he mediates and agrees with both. He iterates: Things are more accepted now, you can not say shit and just feel it, or be super lyrical. Shit changes, some good, some bad depending on your standing withing it all. Most of it is temporary, and it will shift back. And though things are shifting, the shifts are period and have been repeated before.
shouts out to Pharrell for mentioning disco, that was messed up how they tried to shut down an entire genre of music, and it worked until recently when people started going back and saying "wow this is good stuff"
Great interviewer, amazing musicians on show!
I could sit and listen to this for an hour I wish they'll just upload uncut video videos of these interviews
One of the most important dialogues on the show yet!! 👏👏👏👏
Omg I just found this! Amazing!
i love these. can you watch the full interviews anywhere? also pharrells chanel glasses r so dope
I'm amazed by Pharrell. Throughout this video, he is literally paying respect to OTHER. A great artist can be a fair critic. And look at his shades, its so dope!
Wow, they were basically talking about posts with music and reels before it was introduced! And Pharrell was completely interested
Love these conversations. They're fantastic. So intellectual. So engaging. Love P's connection to James Brown and how he did the same sort of things with Adkins and spewing nonsense lots of the time. James Brown just felt what was right and did it on the spot. "The Payback" is a great example of it. Basic baseline, melody, and lyrics, but other than that, he just says what he wants to, following the flow and direction of the song.
who was flylo gonna say? future? thugga? migos? chief keef? damn i wna know
+Michel Fooly Cooly we all know he was gonna say kendrick.
psure he loves kdot, they've worked together on numerous occasions...
Michel Fooly Cooly i was jokin bro
+Michel Fooly Cooly all of them? (i still fuck wit future tho)
that young terr avatar tho
I mean the early stages of hip-hop were all about rocking the party and getting people to dance and have a good time. It's no different than what you hear on the radio today. Things haven't really changed that much. Music that gets you hype has always been popular, from that early disco-rap, to 2 Live Crew, Digital Underground, to Puffy, to the No Limit era, to Lil Jon, right on through to the Fetty Wap's you hear now.
And I do love the lyrical driven hip-hop of the golden age, but there still are great lyricists today. It might not be in the mainstream as much as it was in '94, but it's there right at your fingertips. It's easier than ever to find good music through the internet so you can find whatever style you like. Great time for music.
Older generations have their list of "feeling" songs from their time period and our generation have our own list of "feeling" songs from our time period. Since music changed during those times, our understanding and relation to "feeling" for what we listen to has also changed, and it will continue to change for future generations.
my 2 favs
Really annoying how Verner doesn't get 'it'.
Damn, this is great
two music gods
im in 30 seconds of this video and the man doesn't let the people talk! listen to the masters mane
that boy Brandon Thomas produced the fuck out that OG MACO joint! OGG!
Flylo is so fine goddamn 😍
FlyLo is always cautious with not giving too much away. (8:30) fucking guy! to this day i'm still dying to learn about his work ethic...
the interviewer seems so close minded in a way...
+Foxy Brown
or he mightve been playing devils advocate. i mean to me it seemed like he asked a general question to see what there stance on modern music was/is & in reaction to that he stood opposite of their opinions to create conversation.
he just can't get his mind around Pharell's way's of thinking. Pharell talks about CHANGE, he can't cope with that concept. he's stuck. he'll forever be stuck.
thats the dude who writes all the music to Entourage. hes a musician and would rather listen to talent based music. not close minded he just has his own perspective
He raises some honest points though. The main thing I notice about lots of 2010s music is that it sounds interesting, has lots of sound design, whereas an older song from the 90's sounds less in your face, in terms of beat and sound design but also seems to have more soul and meaningful lyrics to it. I like music from both eras though, in general they have different strengths and weaknesses. I agree with Pharrell's open way of thinking, our music is a reflection of our culture.
He really is I don't like him at all.
This was a cool conversation, I wish I had friends like this
great convo
I get was Scott was saying. I've always felt the same. I don't think that MOST of what is popular today, will be looked at 20 years down the line and be considered iconic or ground breaking. It's just all momentary catchy goodness.
they are all right and Scott's points are also on point.
What's the secret technique they are talking about?
+Cedric Liemessing The only interesting thing they brought up ... I want to know too ... ?
Im sayin!! At least let us know in an AMA or something
Pharrell comparing James Brown to modern trap is the realest shit lol
Very interesting to hear this guys having different opinions and perspectives... amazing!
flylo is talking about Desiigner
HE IS PRETTY COOL THOUGH
Someone tell me the Instagram trick for music!
I need to knowwwwww
+ERay152 Fuck man talk about being curious :@
ERay152 I'll be here too when someone drops their knowledge on us
They might just be shazaming shit or just finding old loops by themselves on ig
yeah me too
awesome
MUSIC IS A MENTAL TIME-STAMP. When this current (youth) generation becomes my age, they will rock out to Lil' Yachty, Future, etc., attending their "reminisce" tours like my generation does with EPMD, KRS-1, etc. #cyclical
I agree with Pharrell. Well put man.
where has this interview been my whole life ?
well said pharrell. in all essence the world keeps spinning, old trends are improvised to build a new history while remaining connected to the past in honor of ancestors.
Pharrell fly as fuck
You can tell it's gonna be an Intelligent discussion when you got Pharell & Flylo in the room, Both are Innovators & Visionaries in Hip-Hop! :D
WE WANT THIS WHOLE INTERVIEW!!!!!! On UA-cam plz guys give it to us
I just want to rock come back but with some experimentation and progression! Maybe taking some of these new elements of hip hop that make it great right now, like the shit FlyLo is doing, and seeing how they work with good old tube sound.
well done
Lotus is blatantly talking about Future.
+TheBlack JohnWayne i'm intrigued
+TheBlack JohnWayne i thought he was talking about the baking soda tune
+TheBlack JohnWayne nah he was talking about Fetty Wap
nah.. iz Yatchy lmao
Most people’s life is much more complex now that we prefer most times to feel good than to listen to stories, we see and watch stories all day in social media but still some of us we love to hear stories
Scott Vener did the right thing
.
dope hat P.
Is this a Flylo interview or a Pharrell monologue? Falling asleep
+stansarproductionz Thought the same
+stansarproductionz Pharell likes the sound of his own voice
this is pharrell being the only humble and futuristic person in the room.
for real
Flying Lotus has consistently made music that still sounds like it came out 20 years from now though
i wish flylo would have had a chance to get in on the convo
very interesting !
Pharrell is completely right on this one. Using that OG Maco song as an example of this 'new school' was pretty on point as well. There's so much wrong with the interviewer's position (that said, he's allowed to like whatever he wants to). We're talking about music here. If you're a traditional rap fan, so much of what you're attracted to is not just the music but the poetry. And that's cool. And there are still rappers who do that kind of thing. It's dumb to act like it doesn't exist. It does, and it's easy to find, it's just not as popular.
But guys like Pharrell, myself, and really most people I think, mainly just care about the music. The lyrics can add to that, but their biggest contribution is attitude and vibe rather storytelling or wit (at least if we're talking about this modern rap stuff). And that's more of a musical thing than having to do with language. It's pushing the music forward, into something new. That what I and so many other people love. There is gold there, and there's tunes we'll consider classics 15 years from now. It's just not about the 'rapping'.
Guys like this interviewer are longing for a certain marriage of language and music. But they just call it 'music' or 'rap', when really it's a specific combination of two mediums. All these new school artists, it's more about the one medium of music (also the two medium combo of audio and visual). These two different type of rap fans are really talking about two different types of music, but they don't realize it, so the oldheads get annoyed when Young Thug is put into the same category as Rakim. But it's really not the same category.
+Idiots depends on what you're trying to do. Lyrics can be utterly irrelevant if you execute it right.
***** Ok, thanks for letting me know you didn't read a few paragraphs. lol. But that's exactly what I'm saying man. Lyrics and music are not objectively equally important. Maybe to you they are, but not to everyone. Some stuff can stand alone just by how good the music is, just as some stuff can stand alone just by how good the lyrics are. Of course they're usually intertwined, but they aren't always. Whether you like it or not, they can be separated. Words are technically not music. The way the words sound - the cadence, the melody, whatever - that's the musical aspect.
***** "False presumptions"...okay, check the charts. What rap stuff is the biggest right now? It's generally the stuff that isn't considered very 'lyrically mature'
+Idiots its funny to spot those involved in making music and those who are not. p diddy might be in this bitch making sure the next generation is on point to receive his features. I read your comment Matt but it's boring, didn't care for it. The video. Dope beyond my wildest dream. I agree with Flylo on producer keep the gold. I always thought producers dumb down their beats. Stuff they know they love but don't feel like putting it out. Happens to everyone. 10 tracks later they mastered the light yet powerfull way sooo ... in the end, the music is in the stars! Lyrics is just a tool, yes it's important. And yes without songwriting you wouldn't LOVE a song that much. However, you said word are not music, i disagree very much. At end it's just a file and you clic, could be a trillion same file with the same extension same name, you just have to get THE FEELING RIGHT. I guess.. there is no secret. Just pick a lane and jump to the opposite, dig a hole, drop a bomb in it and throw yourself in it. Also, don't pay attention to idiots who don't know the difference between i like it and it's okay to like it.
beauty in the chaos. also music needs to be personal, intimate, have different perspective. i love 360 music like j cole. it just makes you feel human. JANUARY 28TH.
Flying Lotus and Pharrell producing a track together would sound incredible
they have dude multiple tracks lololol
scott vener needs to stop posing questions like they have binary answers..
+zhbroder music is math
+zhbroder shit was driving me insane.
+brokemogulradio Interpretation of art and its history ain't
Scott Vener legit just called DJ's & Producers becoming the rockstars "sad", right in front of Flying Lotus. LOL wow.
+JamesRhymerFilms ha nah, i said it was sad that rock guy is trying to get a feature.
+JamesRhymerFilms In front of both FlyLo AND Pharrell. I know he fancies himself a curator (i.e. professional music listener) but it seems his tastes always involve looking backwards, never forward. This is why he didn't realize how dumb what he said was. Sorry Scott but there's more great stuff than ever now. Expand your horizons and dig around; we're not even dependent on major labels any more. If you really think the only examples of lyrical classics these days are Kendrick's albums, you're not doing your job.
we need that pharrell and flylo collab
But does everything new need to be celebrated...like change isnt always good
+NappyPappy4life well that depends on the persons point of view. Like they were talking about in the video, a lot of older hip hop fans that grew up with lyrical rap music don't really want to embrace the new feeling based rap because of how vapid the lyrics are. But then you look at the kids of this generation that are growing up with it, they love the change. So really there is no good or bad change.. its just simply change.
+NappyPappy4life Pharrell isnt arguing that all music should be celebrated, im sure even he agrees that there is plenty of bad music out there right now just like there always has been
+NappyPappy4life we're in the middle of the change rn so celebration is too soon rn. it's hard to celebrate something we all don't completely understand yet... everything in life, even culture makes more sense in hindsight, when you reflect back and get a clearer view of what was going on at the time and consider the why and hows... maybe in a decade, when music is all about repetitive 15 second loops - we'll look back to today and it'll make more sense in how today's music has influenced tomorrow's music. that's when it will make more sense to celebrate. because then we will understand it better in hindsight.
Capatint Murphy....hmm how much i appreciate this man
I wish Apple Music made full videos available from each OTHERTONE episode. :/
The James Brown thing was a GREAT POINT
First time seeing Flying Lotus without sunglasses
Hip hop is a culture with genres like rap and trap to me, such as Soul, with Neol Soul and Jazz Neo Soul and etc
Very interesting conversation
Is there a full video Podcast? If so I will give money
Good
I could feel Scott's point of view way more... change isn't always a good thing. Although hip-hop survived the No Limit/Cash Money 'movement' before and I'm sure it can ride this one out.
+James Yeah I agree - I thought Scotts remark about music today sometimes being watered down, was really interesting. It was too bad that they didn´t follow up on that topic. It feels like Pharrell had an idea in his head that he was right, without really giving time/space to think about the counter-arguements.
I think ultimately what Flylo and P are saying is; no matter your musical preference - which can morph over time, it's all about detecting the sweet spot.
The more I hear Pharrell Williams speak, the more like him.
But it´s also called change when music becomes more commercial, image-based and focused around hitting sales-numbers. I don´t think all change is necessarily for the better - not initially anyways. But I agree that good will always prevail, because people will eventually get sick of it (f.ex. commerciality/being spoken to primarily as a consumer), and start demanding more depth/quality.
+kristine s Exactly. No matter what the current movement is, the people will always pick their true champion.
+Skechers Yes, I agree. I really like Beastie Boys fex., and I find a lot of their stuff more musically relevant, poignant and giving even today - than for example Desiigner. Even though it was made maybe 15 years ago. To me it actually also sounds "fresher" than a lot of the new stuff - because it´s crafted well. In my opinion :-) I embrace that music changes parametres with every generation, but if the focus mainly becomes on image and being "cool" in a certain way (almost like reality-TV) - then to me that´s lazy music, and I would rather listen to any other music, that is alive with passion.
damn og maco got a shout out lol
+IAin't Nervous I just tweeted him this video. Lol
how do I find these musical gems on instagram?
The way I see these "Mumble rap" artists or soundcloud rappers is like avant garde music. Jack the Dripper is essentially not very talented but his art was innovative and well received. Art in all mediums changes, and some artists push the extremes to where it makes you question whether something is good or not... All credit to the Based God, Lil B for being the moon to create the current waves.
what the website that they were talking about to get older music
when flylo releasing his new album tho
+luminatebeats October, just like usual lol
