I am the founder of the Funday Pawpet Show. That September 11 episode was done at a time in which we were moving the broadcast studio from one location to the other. The equipment wasn't quite completely hooked up yet when the events of September 11 happened so when we scrambled to set things up to make a broadcast that night the recording devices were not part of the connections that were made in a rush to get to the streaming. Therefore it wasn't that there was a lack of interest in recording it, but rather that part of the gear had not been unpacked and hooked up. Unfortunately the streaming media content of those days was very lacking, so recording live streams was difficult. It was a difficult night, but people did appreciate the efforts of that night.

Recently, there has been some slight developments in the search of the BBC Sad Story of Henry. Someone managed to come in contact with a crew member of the show and provided them with key production notes, including layout arrangement, model trains used, and attempts for following episodes. While the original broadcast is most likely lost, there is at least growing information that paints a picture of what it might have been like.

Hey, I’m the guy who wrote the original article on the Sad Story of Henry 1953 for the OG lost media wiki back around 2013-2014 or so. I’m always glad to see people talk about it, especially since when I write the article on it there were maybe two sources online for it, an article on Sodor Island Fansite which mentioned it in passing, and a scan of a news article I had to dig for. I should clarify that the claims of found footage or the like was not my doing, and I don’t know why people have claimed that since. I’m glad more info has since come out and I’d like to mention that within the last year there’s been further developments. Someone who preserves many props and BTS material from the later 1984 onwards show, has been in contact with a crew member who worked on the 53 pilot, and has received notes on the layout, engines, and other production details. They aren’t shared publicly yet, but it gives me hope that someday something will turn up, even if it’s just images of the broadcast

One piece of lost media that I want to try and find is the Appeal of June 18th which was a radio broadcast by Charles de Gaulle urging the French people to resist the German occupation. The Sonic the Hedgehog 1990 prototype that Yuji Naka himself said was lost, and the other Super Mario World 1989 stuff and others in the gigaleak that was lost to time due to poor archival. Also, kinda unrelated, but the entire SM64 prototype repo is thought to still exist, since the iQue repo that was in the leak contained only what Nintendo gave to them. The piece of lost media I personally want to find is a tape that UNICEF made in collaboration with the cast of Degrassi Junior High, a forgotten Canadian 1980s high school show that got a better-known reboot in the 2000s starring a young Drake. The tape was apparently released to schools across Canada in 1989, and one or two copies are known to exist in an Ontario university (non-loanable, meaning it can only be used inside the library). Apart from that, it's never been available online, and was barely mentioned in the slightest. The "forgotten" part is the main hurdle, unfortunately. Degrassi is a pretty niche franchise already, being in a genre that a lot of people tend to ridicule and that is less appealing to the lost media crowd than kids shows/cartoons. Add the fact that the original 80s version is significantly less known and remembered outside of the narrow Canadian Generation X'ers who admitted to watching and liking it makes the chances of bringing attention to the search little to none. Me and a few people have searched really hard for it, but have come up with virtually nothing except some old UNICEF brochures that mention the video and an eight second clip from some documentary, which for obvious reasons was a great find, but that was over a year ago. It's always made me sad that a simple lack of interest can contribute to media becoming lost.

  • @Darxide23

Most older video games no longer have source code. I don't know when it became the norm to save source code, but it was probably as recently as the PS2/XBox 360 era. Prior to that, if your company name wasn't Nintendo then you didn't save source code. For various reasons. Lack of storage capacity, lack of interest in preservation (for most of the time that video games have existed, nobody thought they would be anything people would care about after their initial release), and security (to keep someone from stealing the source and creating pirated versions of the game or stealing tech) have all been cited. So singling out any one game for "lost source code" is probably a bit superfluous. It's like picking out one snowflake on a mountaintop. It's kind of pointless.
However, lost source code for games that were completed, but never released? Now that's a different topic. One of my personal holy grails is the expansion for Ultima VIII: Pagan called _The Lost Vale._ The expansion was complete and so close to release that game boxes were even printed, though most of them ended up destroyed when the expansion was cancelled as a result of EA acquiring Origin Systems, Inc. One surviving box (confirmed authentic) sold on eBay in 2005 for almost $2000. People who worked on the project said manuals had been printed as well and the master had been sent out to be stamped onto CDs, but that the order was cancelled before any discs were produced. After EA acquired Origin, whatever remained of the source for that expansion seems to have been discarded from all accounts. It's quite likely that it's lost forever.
The source for Ultima VIII itself still exists in the hands of former Origin employees. One anonymous ex-Origin dev reached out to the devs of a fan project to remaster Ultima VIII for modern hardware and offered them the complete source code to the original game. They declined, for legal reasons. But it's good to know that it still exists somewhere and might see the light of day eventually. But the expansion? Seems gone forever.

Heck, not just source code to video games. Video games IN GENERAL. I know that sounds like a bit of a stretch considering how many video games from the 80s & 90s we have preserved, but beneath all of those are the games that got released & put on store shelves for sale or were mail order titles, sold very poorly & ultimately will likely never be found despite the games being released. And that number is only growing more & more, even if one of those games eventually gets found & preserved.

If that sounds oddly specific, there was some guy in New Jersey who used to make custom Atari 2600 carts for kid's birthdays. The game would have their name and stuff in it. As far as anyone can tell, he never even made more than 10 or 15 of them, but some of those have even been found. It's kind of bonkers to think about. Same thing can be said for the deleted scenes from The Wizard of Oz, the classic iconic 1939 movie. The full uncut version of The Wizard of Oz that was shown only to test screenings before the movie got released in theaters Nationwide, it ran 20 minutes longer than the version of the film we have today.
The only deleted scene from that movie that completely survives or just remains fully intact is the scarecrow dance, it's also called the extended version of If I only had a brain.
The lost deleted scene from the movie that to me is the most painful and the most tragic loss is the Triumphal Return to Emerald City.
It's also called the reprise of Ding Dong The witch is Dead.
Only a few seconds of footage of that scene survive in one of the trailers for the movie, and some production stills, the entire audio and soundtrack still survives for that scene. It would have been the musical climax of the movie if it had stayed in the film.
Sometimes I wish I never found out about that deleted scene, because when I watch The Wizard of Oz now, the movie feels tragically incomplete.

Ninja Gaiden isn't the only classic Japanese gaming franchise to lose it's source code, it also happened to Silent Hill as Konami also ballsed up big time and lost the original source code for both Silent Hill 2 and 3, which is the reason why Silent Hill HD looked inferior by comparison as Konami had to essentially remake the game from scratch and they were unwilling to dedicate a lot of time and resources to do it so they did it on the cheap.

While it won't get us the pilot, he may be nice enough to tell us more about the plot, differences, or material he might still have of it. He's a really cool guy, and 12 oz. Mouse is a really good show that I definitely recommend to anyone watching!

That story about Ninja Gaiden Black reminds me so much of the sad tale of one of my favorite games, Jet Set Radio Future. It was a pack-in game for the original Xbox, funnily enough, and was essentially a remake of the original Jet Set Radio (known as Jet Grind Radio in the US for reasons I am not privy to) for the Sega Dreamcast. It was generally well-received and has a cult following to this day, in particular for its unique cel-shaded art style and its incredible soundtrack. Sadly that soundtrack, in addition to kind of being lost media in and of itself, is the reason the game never got a release for any other console. The soundtrack for the game contained several tracks mixed by the Latch Bros., which was a group founded in part by Mike D of the Beastie Boys. At the time the Beastie Boys were operating their own record label, Grand Royal, and naturally all of their content was released under that label. Unfortunately they seem to be much better DJs than record executives, as Grand Royal folded in 2001, shortly after releasing a music sampler for JSRF, which incidentally wound up being the final release from the label. The rights to Grand Royal's catalog was sold off to independent buyers several years ago, but this didn't include any rights to anything made by the Beastie Boys themselves, which included Mike D's work with the Latch Bros. Given the hassle that tracking down the rights to the game's soundtrack would entail, combined with the likely minimal returns for doing so, and the backlash that would likely result from changing the game's iconic soundtrack, the game has never seen a re-release, and emulation support is spotty at best, so for now the only surefire way to play the game is on the original Xbox. To add insult to injury, as far as I can tell it doesn't look like the soundtrack ever received a cohesive release; the Grand Royal sampler contained part of the soundtrack, and the game's official soundtrack contained a different part, but I don't think they were ever released together, and even if you could find both (which would be an expensive proposition), I'm not sure that would encompass the entire soundtrack.

Especially if that piece of content is old and therefore kept by an older person who had some relation to it.

    • @Idran
      @Idran 2 роки тому +5

@@gavinthecrafter I guess that depends on how you define "lost media"? I usually include writing and art in that, not just audiovisual stuff (that's still media, after all), and I think something like 99% of the writing or art that's ever been produced by humanity is definitely and irreversibly lost just by time alone.
For specifically modern media though, yeah for a lot of it that might be true, but some of it we can confirm it's lost without any chance of recovery, even incredibly historically significant stuff. One of the things that makes me saddest is the fate of literally almost everything produced by the DuMont Television Network, for example. :(
It was one of the big three with NBC and CBS when television first started, even possibly the _first_ television network depending how you count, but it collapsed in 1956, just before the first videotape recorder was even invented let alone sold, so we know for a fact that there couldn't possibly be any copies made by viewers. Some of their kinescopes were taken home by hosts back in the day (that's why most all of the surviving stuff of theirs we know of is Gleason's original pre-series Honeymooners sketches) but most of them just stayed in the DuMont archives; no copies or anything since there wasn't any point to it, just the original recordings. And all those original kinescopes were, no joke, literally dumped in the East River in the early 70s by a later network that inherited their IP, in order to make room in their warehouses for more recent tapes. :(

It was about this creepy sunflower that was talking and (maybe?) singing to the viewers. I remember the sunflower being kinda like a puppet and she (the sunflower) had long eyelashes. The vast majority of silent films can be safely said to be lost forever because they were produced on nitrate film, which degrades severely after a couple decades if not stored very carefully. Sometimes you'll open an old film case and it'll just be a pile of dust inside, so it's a race against time to get these films found, preserved, catalogued, and digitized. The Library of Congress concluded in a study several years ago that as much as 70% of the ~11,000 American silent films ever made are gone forever and only 14% of those movies still exist in their original format. That study is nearly a decade old now, so that number is surely even lower now. There's also all the old tv shows that were simply never saved to begin with because that wasn't common until I Love Lucy, which was so good that it invented reruns.

To date there's never been an official animated adaptation of the series (anything you see online are all fan animated projects), HOWEVER there was an OVA made back in 2010 that crossovered Touhou with the anime/manga retailer chain Anime Tenchou, and it was only shown at private screenings that forbad cameras. Even if it's BAD you can bet your ass that it took sleepless nights, anxiety attacks and sobbing fits to even get out the door. As James of Dead Meat is fond of saying "No matter what else, they made the movie!" That makes all art, regardless of quality, of presentation, of time period or relevance or memory worth saving, if only to preserve it as a monument to the people who put a drop of their creative soul into the brew.

I loved it and had a lot of the books, vinyl, annuals and even a ludo game. I also had Mr Men books and wondered for years why the Mr Men books were reprinted and kept in circulation but the Munch Bunch wasn't. Turns out there was a fire where the artists and writers of the books kept their work and the original art for many of the books was destroyed. He knows that, but that character still paved the way for Johnny Bravo's creation so it's still technically a pilot, it's like how Seth MacFarlane's Larry and Steve was considered a pilot for family Guy because it had a similar concept and characters, it may not be an official pilot per se but it's still how the cartoons that came after it started in the first place.

Hey, long time Ninja Gaiden fan here. It's speculated that the "we lost the source code" excuse from Koei-Tecmo as a reason to not re-release Black and vanilla NG2 was a lie. The motivation for it makes sense if you know about Team Ninja, (the special development team behind Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden) and especially their former leader, Tomonobu Itagaki's relationship with Tecmo.
Itagaki founded Team Ninja with hand picked developers in the mid 90s to work on his then new Dead or Alive series to compete with Tekken. It was a massive success for Tecmo. Then in 2000, he began work on reviving the long dormant Ninja Gaiden series, which came out in 2004 to massive acclaim. The game received several balance adjustments, new weapons, enemies, a new difficulty mode, and gameplay modes through periodic DLC releases throughout the next year, and since DLC was not nearly as widespread back then, Team Ninja packaged all the new features and changes into a special definitive edition of the game as Ninja Gaiden Black in 2005. This is why we say Black is the best version of the first game, it's the most feature complete to have been worked on by the original team, as opposed to Sigma which was worked on by a different director and team and has different, more controversial changes.
Now, around this time, Itagaki got in hot water with Tecmo, he was faced with a female employee bringing a sexual harassment lawsuit against him, and he countersued claiming Tecmo had failed to pay him properly for overtime/vacation. This drama continued into the development of Ninja Gaiden 2, and as a result that game was released unfinished in June 2008. Immediately after NG2 came out, Itagaki left the company on bad terms and they have basically scrubbed all evidence of his work other than Dead or Alive from their history. This is why They only ever acknowledge the Sigma versions of the Ninja Gaiden games (which had zero involvement from Itagaki) and why we believe their "we lost the source code" excuse is just that, an excuse, and there's still bad blood between them and Itagaki. Even if it was true, other game companies have lost source code and still managed to find ways to rerelease their games anyway by ways such as reverse engineering.
Sorry for the essay, but NG is my favorite game series and I wanted to throw my knowledge in.

Something neat that I feel like bringing up would be that the first 15 years of television were live broadcasted, and could not be recorded properly, leading to no actual copies of these shows that could actually have been made or found, making them essentially permanently lost media, having no chance of ever being seen again

With Ninja Gaiden, while the source code is still lost, you should have noted that the games have actually been re-released and can still be purchased/played on modern Xbox consoles via backwards-compatability. That's how I bought NGB, and it's the way to go for most Ninja Gaiden fans since they got enhancements on there.

But I didn't know they lost the source codes. That's a shame... and also sadly not the first time it happens. Iirc Square Enix is also really bad at archiving their source codes.

I highly reccomend Ninja Gaiden Black. Imo it's the best hack n slash action game ever. Far better than even the DMC and Bayonetta games imo, so if you like those it's a must play. The only thing I know about Sigma is it made the checkpoints fully restore health which cut down the difficulty in a bad way.

This can be said for most live stage shows that aren't on Broadway. I wanted to see Pasadena Playhouse's "Gather: Surprising Stories and Other Mischief" (a program of "story theatre") in 2019 but couldn't due to a number of factors (namely the fact that I couldn't find anyone willing to go with me to Los Angeles). Unless the cast or the Playhouse themselves recorded a dress rehearsal or performance night for posterity, it might as well be lost forever.

The album we have is from lower quality backup files Dan uploaded to Dropbox before their hard drive crashed and wiped the original recordings. I guess since it’s an open and shut case there’s not much to talk about, but it’s such an absolutely one of a kind album (one of my personal favorite albums of all time) I wish it got talked about more.

The best example of lost media that are lost forever are personal lost media. a good portion of youtube videos I've made back then were never archived and are pretty much lost forever. Because my videos were obviously not popular, its extremely infeasible for someone else willing to archive them when they still exist. Maybe you can relate to me with stuff you made that might be lost as well.

Where is this description coming from? If you don't remember making it, why do you believe some other person that says you did? Unless you have some kind of medical condition that makes it likely you would have forgotten that you did something, wouldn't your own memories be more reliable than some other person?
People on the internet lie about stuff like this all the time. For example, as a joke or prank some guy made up an entire seasons worth of episodes and contributed them to an online episode guide for a cartoon called "Street Sharks". This "tainted" episode guide was then referenced by others an many people believed these episodes really existed because of it.

Honourable mention, the uncut version of the 1998 WWF Over the Edge pay-per-view. Because the full version includes the tragic death of Owen Hart, it was decided to be locked in a secure room labeled, "Never to be viewed, copied, or destroyed," in WWE's archives, likely out of respect to the Hart family. Other examples of the content kept in this room is the footage of Droz receiving the powerbomb that made him a quadriplegic and (I'm assuming) the Chris Benoit tribute show.

Here's one that goes back quite a few years. Anyone recall the animated version of "The Honeymooners", produced by Hanna-Barbera? It debuted at the same time that "The Flintstones" first aired. In fact, The Honeymooners animated used all of the same voice actors as The Flintstones. It was an early attempt at adult animation, and aired late on Friday night. However, it only ran for half a season. Sadly, today, it appears that no copies of that series still exist.
