- What encryption schemes are likely to have been used in Kryptos K4?
I could have been clearer when I talked about "comparing the stats of the ciphertext against itself" (obviously, I meant against random shuffles of itself). Also, the reasons this comparison isn't used much are of course that it's unique to each ciphertext, and quite computationally intensive. I have gone off the transposition plus substitution idea since this video.
Hidden in plain sight. He was not doing complex other than multiple simple steps. No hard math. It was made as simple steps in learning. The other works link in like a crypto codex through languages. I have to wonder if he intended to do that or just happened from a style naturally. As the first parts were not solved the right way. Some were missed even after decrypting. You will get rule sets keywords and key letters and special character markers. Clues X's has multiple checks. Palimpsest, abscissa with hidden X check. V cipher, V cipher, and transposition might be giving rules for K4. K4 is not just transposition as letter count from whats known and the k to k part of the solution given as hints for K4. As the sections are in different order on other pieces. Gets to order to decrypt substitution first and transposition second or such. Dual or single substitution masking? The compass rose links to K4 east northeast. If the set clock, then it's combining sections with rule sets. If alexander plats, then wind rose, and what country is in the east northeast spot.
K1 ( Q,L ) illusion keyed word. Light Lies are the L words. " Between subtle shading and the absence of the nuance of illusion "
K2 layer 2 is words before X's. " Field location somewhere message west "
X's to ?'s might be an illusion or set of questions. " Does Langley know about this? Who knows the exact location? " Keyed word underground ( O,U ) X layer 2 is directions
K3 between X's and ?'s rule. " Can you see anything Q ( illusion )? Before X's " mist " ( E,I ) K3 should link to the morse code part. I hope it helps you some. The k to k and e counts point to K4 being a combination of the 2 types substitution and transposition or 4 square or playfair. Simple yet effective. I wish I knew how they wanted us to solve K1 and K2 the right way or as intended.
Expect to find 1 word keyed to a letter. Expect to find solo X and maybe Q,U,E alone as word substitution to letter or linking sections. Expect to find the order. As they fit together through layers in a way. I.E. 3 links to 1 and 2 though 2 seems to be after 3. I.E. flip 2 and 3 for order of second layers of all 3, or flip 1 and 4 to make the morse set link in as K0. But shows to Expect a keyed word and X,Q,U,E solo for second layer linkings.
Also if deeper to shallower layers point to something. Polybus cipher would fit the theme. Tabula rasa to tabula recta, wind rose to rose of the winds. Ect.. Polybus might link K0 to K4 and would say K0 has multiple layers also.
P.S. the L helps like the Medusa in as a codex of types. Other shorter ciphers he did link along the boarders. The Arabic cipher I couldn't read or find a solution for to link that one into the codex. I'm not even sure he intended for them to fit together so good, but wouldn't put it past him.
P to R , R to T shift 2. S to S , S to T , and Q to N , Q to O. Shift 1. S to S and K to K 1 to 1. P to R repeat. Ect. Looks like simple, though counts look like a 1/4 or 1/2 grid.
K0 LEX ( law ) K0 has the keys. They messed up on the spaces being X's and missed substitution and layer checks. It's amazing they can fit so much in with instructions. E,X a check. You T the E,X's for part. You will need to put a ? after position E for a second layer check. SOS RQ ( Q,L and O,U ) Becomes SS underground Radio illusion. K0 links to each section. Keys, layer checks and rules. As LEX comes out and means law/rules go figure. They did a great job.
