One of the reason never really like 4/8 cylinder sound as much as 6/12/5/10 cylinder engines. I love the chords note clash the engine produces as opposed to 4 or 8 cylinders perfect octave it produces which sounds dull. Also one reason why more the cylinders the better the sound is because each cylinder acts essentially like a sound oscillator, the more oscillators in unison, the phatter and more “full” the sound
I consider myself extremely lucky and privileged to have grown-up with those lovely sounds of the V12 and the almighty V10. Really good video, brought back so many good memories!!!
Yeah. I'm 20 and when I was kid I remember the screaming V10 engines. They were so awesome that you knew that those Cars weren't normal. Now are a meh like almost everything those days. It is like a bunch of non-car guys and non-racing lovers took the wheel from every single racing championship and crashed it into a wall to make non-car freaks, and non-motorsports fans happy.
Well the sound is shit, but the engines themselves are monsters. They are reaching over 370 kph these days, while in 2007 or before that they struggled to reach 330. The aerodynamics are a bit worse today due to rules, but the turbo and electric motor make this cars quite a handful to drive.
Fici hmm, with DRS and other gizmo's to lower the rear wing the cars of today are faster, in theory. Do remember that Renault had a 900hp V10 engine in the mid-90s. Imagine having that engine with the perks and aero-developments of today... So it is kinda comparing apples and oranges IMO
I started following F1 races in 2019 so the V6 doesn't annoy me as much as it does to others, but damn do you feel the sheer enthusiasm of those V10 and V12 roaring. It's joyful and spicy. The V6 doesn't hold any of that power.
The V10 are my favourites for pure naturally aspirated sound. However, I remember Nigel Mansell in the 1.5L V6 Williams/Honda turbo with the boost turned right up for qualifying and close to 1500 brake. That was something to behold.
I stood against a barrier in 2005 from the track and had Alonso fly by in his renault V10 and my ears were ringing for days from that race.... it was like being front and center at an Iron maiden concert. It was fucking awesome.... You could feel the sound from the raw power.... I also saw them in 2010 and 2012 during the V8 era... awesome too but not as much as V10. V6 is terrible to me...

there is never too much noise from those engines, I have listened to the V10s and V12s up close and in person and while deafening I just embraced the sound, that heavenly sound those engines create is something I want to hear again
I don't miss the V10s for Schumacher. Because that was another era of dominance. And dominance by a team in any sport gets old fast. I miss the V10s for the sound and overall quality of the racing.

@@deeptenduganguly8530 well, adk people who hakkinen is and no one will know but ask who schumi is and everyone will know. This is the greatest video on UA-cam I don’t know why this hasn’t been reviewed by every single person on the planet. Clearly we can all see the V 12 is the best sounding engine it just sounds biblical this means F1 needs to switch back to it or everybody in the world will die.
F1 has been in a FIA-induced coma since 2013. This is the first time, in 21 years of watching F1, that I have very little interest left. The Mercedes+Hamilton circus and crappy racing along with cars that just do not sound any different to standaard sports cars. And then we have decisions like Montreal 2019.. it's like a boardroom meeting on track these days. Fucking tragedy...
V12: Most beautiful sound. Powerful but too heavy. V10: Best combo of power/weight and the sound is almost as beautiful as V12 V8: Not as good as the V10, but the downshifts are the best V6: Good sound in the 80s but shit now. Shit without turbo and ERS
@DESTROYER67732 It is less about "being designed to use turbo" but more of a "simply needs one". Remember that F1 cars rely on very high RPM to achieve the rated horsepower. Since power is related to how much air and fuel an engine can take, and having less cylinders means each piston needs to travel more (or each piston will weight more because they would need to be really wide due to extreme bore measures), a V6 would cap at 10k RPM before g-forces in the engine provide too much stress and still won't not make as much power, so a turbo is added to boost this engine to a desirable power and torque rating. A V12 doubles the amount of actuating pistons per crank spin, gaining torque and the pistons won't travel much (reducing G-force stress and consequently allowing higher RPM) to achieve the same power rating even when naturally aspirated, allowing engine speeds of 12K. Another thing: turbos always have a muffling effect, so the V6 Turbo F1 sounds "sad" not only because there is less pistons, but also because the turbo toned muffled it. Tell me if there is anything wrong.
@@NothingXemnas The maximum RPM an engine can achieve is fundamentally limited by the maximum piston speed. Petrol and air have a limited combustion speed, and if the maximum piston speed significantly exceeds this, the engine becomes significantly less efficient. If the stroke is shorter, then the piston speed decreases and it's possible to run higher RPMs. Cylinder count increases smoothness and is correlated with balance, but it's possible to run even an inline-4 at 15k in a motorcycle. Also, the biggest reason that the turbocharged engine sounds "flat" is because the turbo requires a different header arrangement to maximize efficiency. For naturally aspirated engines the ideal setup to maximize power is to dump exhaust gases into equal length headers that all meet at a central collector, minimizing backpressure and scavenging the other cylinders through the Venturi effect. For turbocharged engines there is constant backpressure from the turbo and a simpler log-type exhaust works better in terms of packaging, especially in the aero-dominated modern formula.
Am I the only one who prefers the V12? It sounds like it has so much more spirit and meaning. The V10 is great, don't get me wrong, but the V12 is just so beautiful..

@@verttisyrjala2897 About 1000hp, the first V6's of 80s produced up to 1400hp in qualifying, but were unreliable and had a lot of turbo lag and had the power reduced to 800hp in the races. The modern V6 hybrids produce 1000hp and are changed 3 times a year, while the old V10/V8 engines were changed 4 to 5 times a year and had much less power and consumed much more fuel. Detail: I went to Interlagos at the Brazilian GP last year and I was impressed with the sound of the cars, extremely rough and aggressive mainly in the decelerations, it is not loud like a N/A engine, but still sounds amazing and it still sounds like an F1 car. The new engines are efficient, modern, reliable and open doors for more engine suppliers
+Crazymouse59 the only reason the v6 cars are faster is because of all the tech they have had to put into the cars to gain back speed where they lost it. If you put a v10 into the new cars it would be untouchable
The V10 was the car I remember the most. As a kid when I was 3-4 years old I'd always watch F1 with my dad (this was around 2003/2004) and Michael Schumacher was my favorite driver and that was the car he drove at the time. Absolutely memorable sound
But sound doesn't make power. There are heavy and need too much fuel for a entire race. The technology is simply old and outdated. Almost no manufacturer builds 12 cylinder engines. For what? Nowadays you can achieve more power with less weight and less fuel consumption. Loud noise is power loss
@@florianj6490 but bro formula one cars have so many developed those years from v12 to v6 turbo ,in terms of chassis upgrade ,aerodynamics , Downforce , drs, tires ,etc imagine a V10 engine with those new technologie and turbo and extra soft tires ,i bet car may fly hahha
I just don't feel that new F1s with the V6 the same way as the previous generations. They sound and drive like "normal" open wheel vehicles. Not special as a F1 should be. I'm not sure if I explained that properly. But actually the best lap times were made with the V10s.
I feel you... But f1 is not about the sound but about pinnacle of technology... And that's what it is with the current motor. 1,6 V6 putting out 1000bhp while using less fuel than v10 and v8. I would also prefer v10 over the v6 any time but we can not stop the technology from evolving. If you watch f1 because of the sound there is tons of other series with great sound. But i must admit that i'll take the 2016 v6 sound over the v8 any time
I feel the same, i think that current problem with people and sound is on the TV, i work at the races and i really started to dig the sound this year... Specially while accelerating from the bus stop chicane at Spa, the sound is something special, bunch of "weird" sounds and whistling from the turbine is really sweet. And also lap times will probably fall, Lewis smashed the v10 record in Bahrain this year and also in Sepang (but in sepang the tarmac was resurfaced)
sarkofuck I envy you :D. Do these weird sounds resemble some sort of high pitched whining sound? If so then it's most likely the MGU-K putting power down. Yeah the cars are more quiet on TV, but thats also been the case for the V10 etc. People that complain about the sound are either petrol heads or have started watching F1 during the V10 era. Since that was 11 years ago, their brains associate the V10 sound with less troubled times and that is why it makes them feel "good". (This only aplies to people younger than 26). Or they are just wearing the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. Member berries? (If you haven't watched the new South Park season forget what I just said :D)

Also one reason why more the cylinders the better the sound is because each cylinder acts essentially like a sound oscillator, the more oscillators in unison, the phatter and more “full” the sound
I really like the V8 sound!
V8 all day. For me, the sounds v10s and 12s make are obnoxious and overdone. Like theyre trying to overachieve.
I consider myself extremely lucky and privileged to have grown-up with those lovely sounds of the V12 and the almighty V10.
Really good video, brought back so many good memories!!!
+iamjeffness Thanks!
So it is kinda comparing apples and oranges IMO
iamjeffness yhea omg
When dad watched F1 it sounded like he drilled holes into bedrock. When I watch F1 today it sounds like I'm cleaning my carpet.
I started following F1 races in 2019 so the V6 doesn't annoy me as much as it does to others, but damn do you feel the sheer enthusiasm of those V10 and V12 roaring. It's joyful and spicy. The V6 doesn't hold any of that power.
You should have seen the 2001, 2002. That was symphony
The V10 are my favourites for pure naturally aspirated sound. However, I remember Nigel Mansell in the 1.5L V6 Williams/Honda turbo with the boost turned right up for qualifying and close to 1500 brake. That was something to behold.
@@RichardASK The legendary Red 5, that was a scary monster. Piquet won that year, his partner.

@@deeptenduganguly8530 well, adk people who hakkinen is and no one will know but ask who schumi is and everyone will know. V8: Not as good as the V10, but the downshifts are the best
V6: Good sound in the 80s but shit now. Shit without turbo and ERS
@DESTROYER67732
It is less about "being designed to use turbo" but more of a "simply needs one".

I just don't feel that new F1s with the V6 the same way as the previous generations. They sound and drive like "normal" open wheel vehicles. Not special as a F1 should be. I'm not sure if I explained that properly. But actually the best lap times were made with the V10s.
I have been to Hockenheim this year and I can guarantee you, that no open wheel car on this planet sounds like F1 cars do now.
But i must admit that i'll take the 2016 v6 sound over the v8 any time
sarkofuck I'm glad the V10 are gone. They were a massive waste of fuel and recources.
3:38 Gods chariot approaching you 😦
