this is a serious song. It is about someone who uses music as a distraction from all of the bad things in life, and without it, he has to be overwhelmed with his own dangerous thoughts. He has to just sit and bask in the guilt and sadness and hardships in his life. This song I could listen to for hours. He actually thought about what he was saying and it was meaningful. Most pop songs today (there are many exceptions) just have a catchy melody. This is different. This made me think.
Stephanie Parker twenty one pilots' lead singer, Tyler Joseph said that their band and their lyrics really drive towards making people think. And that's what they plan to do for a lot of their songs. And that's what they have done.
***** No, he actually said that someone stole his car radio and it made him think because he had nothing to distract him until her could get a new one.
I know what you mean, but what you are thinking is not what really happened. You can keep your mind open and interpret what you want, but when he wrote the song his car radio was stolen which made him think about life and stuff and "has no distraction to mask what is real".
***** In live concerts he has said that his actual car radio was stolen and he had no distraction so he was forced to think and that is what this song is about.
My brother just lost his battle with drugs...I will forever cherish this song. He loved this song...I wish I understood at the time why. Love you buddy... now it's me who sits in silence.
1:53 - 2:09 he’s emphasising here that his lyrics are telling you to be alive ❤ “Faith is to be awake and to be awake is for us to THINK And for us to THINK is to be ALIVE And I will try with every rhyme To come across like I am dying To let you know you need to try to THINK” Very deep, I love these lyrics ❤️
@chandlerlowery2357 No he says that thinking means you are alive so what you said is true but he also says you need to try and think aka try to stay alive
This one is really important to me, and to everyone who's dealing with any mental illness. Silence is incredibly important but it can be scary. Being alone with your own thoughts... I sometimes wish "silence" also included muting these thoughts, but that's imposible and I always end up listening to music. Better that than hurting myself. This song means the world to me because it makes me realise I'm not the only one going through this. You're not alone.
Car radio 10 years ago. Yesterday 'Next Semester' came out, and I'm on my thousandth listen. Very different songs,I know, right? They seem so alike, yet so different. same audience, same hair, same group, same emotions, same chills for 10 years. Thank you Tyler, thank you Josh from the bottom of my heart."
In case any are wondering, the song is literally about somebody stealing his car radio. The reason why he's flipping out though is because he deals with depression and needs music to distract him from his dark thoughts.
There are all of these deep comments and then you're just like 'nope- sorry guys'. But not all songs need a deeper meaning to be beautiful. Sometimes something so simple, yet subtly complex is mind blowing-ly amazing.
The "literal" theft of his car radio seems like a metaphysical manifestation to me. Soul grew, understood depression and anxiety came from clouded, egoic thought patterns, decided spiritually that he'd address this... This song is "about" whatever you take from it. That's infinite for you. For ME, this song symbolizes going inside of yourself and recognizing that your car radio (or egoic consciousness) is distracting you, masking what is real. Often, when we first realize a great spiritual truth, it appears as though the truth was revealed by some deity or higher self (the somebody who stole my car radio). Whether or not you're able to see yourself in that deity is dependent on how far along the path you are, although it doesn't really matter because you're where you should be.
The best thing I’ve done this 2023 as a 60yo was discovering Twenty One Pilots. Yeah, OK, I’m a bit slow, but hey, it’s never too late. Blown away by the lyrics and musical talent that is like no other. My Car Radio is on maximum!
Dude....I'm in the exact same boat. These guys strike a chord with me that I cannot explain. I started with Ride and The Hype.....and I am adding songs to my playlist almost every day. Better late than never!
I used to love tøp and adore the hidden meanings behind each song. I didn't always understand it but where intrigued by them. But you soon realize the moment you start going insane, the moment your sanity fades away, the moment your anxiety and depression hit you and bring you down so hard, you start to understand every word of their songs. I know they'll never see this but I love this band so much because they've been through all the anxiety and pressure and depression, yet they take so much time and effort devoted to us, the fans, the clique. They always have a smile on their face. There's not ONE word that describes how thankful I am for Tyler and Josh being alive. In the past I'd be willing to end it all right here but they want all of us to stay alive, and that's what I'm striving to do for the rest of my life as long as twenty øne piløts keep performing and making music. Stay alive, frens. "Who's happy to be alive today?" -Tyler Joseph
I feel the same way. Sometimes I feel crazy because of how insanely depressed and unhappy I can get, not necessarily by bad things that happen to me, but how my brain reacts to it. Ex: one stupid thing is said to me and all of a sudden I can't control how out of control I feel. My brain is stabbing my heart, telling me how worthless I am. But it's songs like these that help me stay positive. It's bands like Twenty One Pilots that inspire me to inspire others and love my self regardless of what is said it done to me, and motivate me to find and live for my purpose.
TheSketcher96 hey I also suffer aniexty extremely bad where I can not leave my house on my own I hate crowds or being around certain people I hear my name always whispered she done this she done that I am a suffering drug addict I medicated myself from I was a kid an now I am living day in an out with the needle an my health is fading fast so I understand you :'(
I've heard their popular songs before, but until Clancy, I haven't really listened to their music. It's an amazing expression of their inner struggles. The pain, the anger, the release... For me cutting the hair is a way to self-inflict pain, a path to change, and letting out all of the stuck-up emotions. This song is a powerful message for those who need to get through the silence.
In 8th grade english class, my teacher had us read the lyrics, listen to the song, then watch the video as a class to analyze poetry. We answered questions on a worksheet about how it made us feel. One of the questions after the video was "what suprised you the most about the video?" To which my one friend responded, "that it was shown in class."
no one inspires me more than Tyler. he's come so far, he proved his point. he fought so hard in life, through everything, and look at him now. he's married, has a baby girl, in one of the most popular bands in existence, and overcame his demons. the phrases from this band will always inspire me to keep going because of them. truly, power to the local dreamer. and stay alive.. because there's purpose in this life, no matter how hard it gets, and Tyler set the perfect example for that. i love them so much.
This is was my very first twenty one pilots song I heard. I instantly fell in love with it. I'm somewhat new to the band, as I have only been a fan for about 4 months now. I know all the lyrics to every song on Vessel. I was so excited once Blurryface came out. After listening to Blurryface non-stop for the past three weeks, I can say that twenty one pilots is my new favorite band. I honestly have not seen a better fan base for than the twenty one pilots fan base. Everyone is so supportive in their music, and like them no matter what. I see no hate comments about them. Not only that, but everybody feels like I do, like all their songs are perfect. Ironically, we still listen to them since even Tyler said “Don't trust a perfect person, and don't trust a song that's flawless."
Welcome to the fandom. I've been a fan for a few years now, and I still remember when they had barely a million view on this video. Wow. What I love about the fan base is that everyone is very welcoming to new members. There are no ranks based on how long you've liked them. If you like them, you like them. I'll be honest, I was sad at first to see so many new people joining because I liked how small and intimate and personal it felt to have a smaller fan base, but now my outlook has changed. New fans are able to give their impressions of the music and music videos meanings. We are able to feel included in something. This song means so much to me. And I'm glad that Tyler's lyrics and Josh's beats have been able to reach a higher potential and make more people feel worth something. We forget how powerful bands and artists and music in general can be until its affected us so greatly. So, once again, welcome to the fan base, and I hope you continue with us for the whole ride.
everWho Well, that's good to hear, because they will be playing big arenas soon enough. Their music is authentic, original and anthemic in a way that very few recent bands are, and touches people at the core in profound ways. I haven't met a single person who doesn't like them once they got into their songs and the tide is growing.... talented songwriters to be sure!
2:16 here starts the best part of the song. It's so great how it builds up. The audience standing still and (yes) in silence. And how he screams the lyrics "and now I just sit in silence" sound like heavy metal to me. The lyrics being so meaningful. Kind of open to interpretation. This song is so great.
It's been 7 years......world has face global pandemic, economic crisis, cyclone, 6 months lockdown.....after all this I just have one question....does somebody still have his car radio?
I hope you get in touch with yer child within and god leads you and anyone else out any darkness that may lead you or anyone else into self or possible turning officers of the peace into possibly taking you or me or any of us away from each other I know ppl love me and I try my best to love everyone were looking at immortaly with current gene therapy they've finally figuered out for ppl who work or have worked and on disability or even give themselves over to the law and serve time for rehabilitation plz yall don't give up on yourselves nor shall I give up on yall love yall peace be with yall... rehabilitation rehabilitation
I love the hidden metaphors in these songs. It really gets to me because they almost seem to be explaining how I feel right now. I have no real friends, and I am always alone, silent. And I feel like I am going crazy. This song makes me cry because I feel like someone understands me...
Same, I just wish I could show this to everyone who thinks I'm okay, because I'm not but I just have a hard time getting help and try to fix the problem myself and only fails miserably
To 21 pilot, as long as you stay true to what chills your spine, raises your hair straight, turns your guts upside down, what you send us all will have no age. It will grow with us while staying still, and we'll be sitting here in silence. Yet rooted. We can never enough thank you enough guys! For the rest of my life I'll periodically get into the car, set the sound level to high, and reconnect the dots of my life to the origin. Glorious.
That's what I believe he's done. I believe he's overcome that depression and he's better, and.. I don't know. twenty one pilots is a band about depression and helping others that are struggling with depression. And, it's hard to believe someone when you have depression, if they are telling you that you're not alone. For twenty one pilots, you can hear it just in his voice and his movements. And I think he's better now, and that's what I don't like. I'm not saying he was better being depressed, I'm just saying I feel like I've lost a connection to his music.
I was so focused on the car radio, I missed his message. Faith is to be awake And to be awake is for us to think And for us to think is to be alive And I will try with every rhyme To come across like I am dying To let you know you need to try to think He talks to us here. He says that his music is for us. He sings to let us know we need to try to think. And for us to think is to be alive.
Faith in Jesus Christ. He always talks about the shadows and etc also when he said “I don’t know if we know why we’re here” dude literally is fighting demons. Some people say it’s crazy talk but until you physically see one with your eyes, as I did, you have no idea what we’re living in. Changed me forever and I picked up a Bible and read and was the best choice I ever made. God is real. Don’t care what anyone says, depression is a spirit. It’s something there suppressing your joy, The Bible says our joy is in the good, in the Lord. Only through him can we overcome. Keep trying pain pills and therapy if you guys like, it won’t work.
I'll tell you the message: there are Manu people (often depressed) that have bad and suicidal thoughts, and I think the radio is about all the ways you try ti avoid this pain, like staying with friends, having fun or doing activities they like. Someone stole my car radio and now I just sit in silence = now I can't do my activities, doing all the things that can make me forget my pain and now I sit in silence facing my bad thoghts. Then he says faith is to be awake and to be awake is for us to think and for us to think is to be alive and die= thinking can make you feel positive and happy but if you have bad thoughts and you are depresssed, this thoughts can make you feel sad and bring to death. In my opinion this is the message, but depends by the way you see things according to your personal excperience. Ah shit I misundertood a part where he actually says "and I will come across" etc instead of "be alive and die". Anyway, this song has many messages
“I have these thoughts so often I ought to replace that slot with what I once bought.” - *Car Radio 2013* “I got back what I once bought back in that slot I won’t need to replace.” - *Levitate 2018* Edit; thanks for all the thumbs up friends 💛
I remeber hearing that line in Levitate for the first time, and thinking "That sounds so familiar...CAR RADIO"...it's crazy how he uses a lot of references to his other songs that are so old...I love it!
Car radio: “I have these thoughts, so often I ought To replace that slot with what I once bought...” 5 years later... Levitate: “I got back what I once bought back In that slot I won't need to replace...”
man, actually listening to this in the car on a dark night, and hearing that synth is such an experience. and those screams of "NOW I JUST SIT IN SILENCE!" fills me with something i can't explain.
Not really it's because he complicated the way he proposed the message other than that this song is pretty non-underrated 200mil+ views not everyone gets that
This song makes me cry everytime. It is so spot on for describing depression, its everything i felt for years but i managed to change my way of thinking by talking to loved ones. Please, i know it sounds silly or far fetched, but talking really helps... for me talking to strangers helped the most because they couldnt judge me. Then i worked my way up to talking to my loved ones and it was amazing to see and feel how many people actually cared for me..... it literally changed my life. Listening to this song reminds me of how i felt back then. And it makes ne cry. Just knowing that people are going through the same shit that i did and also knowing how simple the solution can be. Just swallow the pride and talk to someone. Trust me. It helps.
@@Stellarainn begin with social media. start playing a game or something, they’ll have discord server for sure. try talking to people there in chats and maybe when time comes you’ll find online friendship. it’s not much of a thing i guess but it’s a starting point. try going to some courses of playing piano or guitar or simply another language - get in the group and start talking. there are many opportunities to start interacting with people you just need to want it and not to be scared
+Anna F I don't think you noticed I actually said "I listen to this almost every day" not wanting to adress the fact that I still listen to it but the fact that I enjoy it as much as the first day I listened to it, but okay whatever
*Watches in 2018 and cries remembering how broken Tyler was* Edit: Yes Tyler is still broken, we all are but we've all made it so far together and that's part of the beauty of the clique also thanks for the likes
The song hits different now because back then we didn't understand sadness as much but now we all have depression and we are all broken + harambee is dead
My dad committed suicide last fall. It gave me the kick to never do it myself. I have a new perspective about this song now. The morning my grandma called to tell me my dad was gone... I jump right away in my car for a few hours drive to my hometown. My new car has a radio but f*ck it, I stayed in silence thinking about my dad that was still alive few hours earlier... just before he hang himself in our house. I still can't understang how I managed to drive safety... I was owning a 1996 Dodge Neon 4 years ago. It had no AUX or CD player, as you can imagine. Anyway, the radio was broken, so not even cassettes. When I would go back to my hometown, it was a 5 hours ride completely in silence, alone with depression. I had suicidal thoughs for years. Weird to think I proposely recreated this silence ride when my dad died. I still have depression, tho.
@@lavelycrow9805 you should stay strong my friend Suicide never helped no one it will only be a cause for depression for others And the chain of grief will continue, so you need to be strong and find strength and the reason to live and to fight back I have a lot of bad thoughts too Because I lost my wife and son I haven't figured out myself what to do, but I will And you will too Stay strong
This song came out when I was a full blown drug addict, smoking pills. Literally homeless, penniless, everythingless. I wasnt exactly fond of 21 pilots but this song resonated for me. I know the feeling of waking up everyday wishing more than anything that you didn't. Being sick and depressed and sick of being depressed and sick was the hardest thing I ever did. The end of the song when he screams is still haunting because it reminds of sitting outside in a cardboard and tarp fort freezing, penniless, dope sick and wishing i'd die in my sleep. I know that scream, I know that feeling all to well.
I know the feeling all too well brother. Glad that we both made it through to the other side. Kudos for sharing your experience, I'm not to the point of sharing mine on a public forum, but maybe one day soon I will. This song definitely resonated with me during my using days...and I also love the sick break down
I don't care if this is overrated, this is my favourite song. it has anger, sadness, anxiety, frustration and happiness and it's like a story of my life. since I found tøp i really felt like i'm gonna be okay
Honestly same. I dont care how much of a fake fan i look like for saying this is and always will be my favorite song of theirs. I relate to it so much and it always makes me feel so much better when ever im really down. All of their music is so amazing but this song hits home with me and i will forever appreciate that.
Heard this for the first time about 6 months after release when a friend recommended it and it changed my life I miss this time of my life it was before everything went wrong
I can't even count the number of times I've watched this video. When they get to the point at 3:00 where the crowd goes wild, I get chills. Every. Time. The same happens in Lane Boy. Fun fact: this reaction is known as frisson.
Back in 2009, my stereo was stolen from my car. It was a nice system, Subwoofer, speakers, amps, everything, and it was the first system I ever installed. I was also a pizza delivery driver, so I spent almost 9 hours a day listening to my favorite songs, and just jamming. The lyrics are perfect for what I felt at the time, I would just get lost in my own thoughts, my own self hatred, my regrets, childhood, the silence was deafening. I remember, vividly, driving down the freeway, doing over a hundred miles an hour at three in the morning, for no reason at all, and I looked at the median barrier, and thought, "I could just pull the steering wheel" and it would be over, no more suffering. I didn't hear this song until much later, but I still put this on from time, to drown out the silence.
My wife a friend and me are going to their show in berlin 2025. I hope so much to hear this song live. Im not long into 21P but this song instantly catched me and didnt let go
As Robin Williams said.. "I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not The worst thing in life is to end up surrounded by people who make u feel alone!"

This song used to be my anthem. This was the song that convinced me I was going to be okay and cemented that I was not alone. Today, in my final semester of college, after countless trials and tribulations to get to where I am, I am planning on using this song in my paper this week. The directions say to dissect a song and connect it to civil engagement. This is surreal, it kind of fits perfectly somehow. It is transcendent. Edit: thanks y'all! I aced my paper, degree in hand, not using it though, got a civil service job with a certification instead, for now. You guys are too nice🥂
Wanted to watch this video and I found your comment scrolling down and I just wanted to say good luck on your final semester! A huge accomplishment and you're gonna kick ass!
Good luck after your semester, which should be right about now. Jobs are a bitch out there right now. Hope you didn't do something stupid like me and get a business management degree. I work on networks now because that degree was freaking useless.
and now i just sit in silence. thanks Tyler for putting these words into history. There are many of us who exist in this state of distress every day. Proud to have experienced you fellas, I hope millions more receive you
Dalton Harmsen I am referring to a more metaphorical meaning of the song. My mother is currently in stage iv cancer of about everything (she might make it to the end of the year). I used to enjoy talking to her for long periods of time, but she is now too weak to converse for very long. So I just sit in silence. The literal meaning of the song was something I was unaware of, and I do appreciate your telling me (really, no sarcasm intended), but it has taken on a different slant for me right now.
i'm adhd and my brain is constantly going a million miles an hour i literally cannot drive without something playing so this song really resonates cause when you're just sitting in silence you really do have those kind of thoughts. i absolutely love this song and this band they are literally the best ❤

“Faith is to be awake

And for us to THINK
is to be ALIVE
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to THINK”
Very deep, I love these lyrics ❤️
I don’t think he’s telling you to be alive, I think he’s telling you that if you’re thinking. you are alive.

It's literally about his car radio being stolen, thus making him sit in slilencd, having these thoughts. No?
same with me
Even the uplifting trancey bit has a touch of depression to it.
Good stuff, with emotional content.
This song still hits today..
The best thing I’ve done this 2023 as a 60yo was discovering Twenty One Pilots. Yeah, OK, I’m a bit slow, but hey, it’s never too late. Blown away by the lyrics and musical talent that is like no other. My Car Radio is on maximum!

So glad to see it
There's so much music in the world, almost impossible to hear it all. This music came to you when the time was right.

I.O.U MEDIA I don't think I'd ever reach that point but I know a lot of people who would.
TheSketcher96 nobody has said anything supportive so here I am. (I don't know what to say but that and I support you?)

The pain, the anger, the release... For me cutting the hair is a way to self-inflict pain, a path to change, and letting out all of the stuck-up emotions. This song is a powerful message for those who need to get through the silence.

I honestly haven't* seen a better fan base.
Typing too fast lol
Lane Boy was my first. I loved it. I listened to their other songs and now they're my second favorite band. actually, maybe tied with Fall Out Boy. 😂😍

Voice of silence
To 21 pilot, as long as you stay true to what chills your spine, raises your hair straight, turns your guts upside down, what you send us all will have no age. It will grow with us while staying still, and we'll be sitting here in silence. Yet rooted. We can never enough thank you enough guys! For the rest of my life I'll periodically get into the car, set the sound level to high, and reconnect the dots of my life to the origin. Glorious.
You can just hear the pain in his voice... Hopefully he's overcome it and is happy where he is at now.

Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think
He talks to us here. He says that his music is for us. He sings to let us know we need to try to think. And for us to think is to be alive.
same
...holy shit
Ignorance is bliss as they say.

I was owning a 1996 Dodge Neon 4 years ago. It had no AUX or CD player, as you can imagine. Anyway, the radio was broken, so not even cassettes. I was also a pizza delivery driver, so I spent almost 9 hours a day listening to my favorite songs, and just jamming. I remember, vividly, driving down the freeway, doing over a hundred miles an hour at three in the morning, for no reason at all, and I looked at the median barrier, and thought, "I could just pull the steering wheel" and it would be over, no more suffering. i wish i could have enough money to go to one of their concerts, I am a huge fan.
brayan leal I feel your pain. I wish I could go to a concert but I don't have money and I'd probably won't handle it well
Just always replay and hope one day I could go to a concert
im so sorry, ive been to one already and I am going to one later this month, I feel for you the only reason I can go is because I have amazing parents tho, I would never be able to afford it myself, it is definitely worth the money so if you ever have enough to go but it costs you a week of being able to eat, id fucking go for it
That's me with this wild life they're playing in my city on my birthday and I'm just sad I can't go 😪😟🤣
I'm going to one this Saturday I admit it's something you should save for man they are insane

How did the paper go? It’s pretty profound. Everyone has their own take on the meaning. We can’t truly know. But that’s the beauty of music.
Proud of you : )
Good luck after your semester, which should be right about now. Jobs are a bitch out there right now. Hope you didn't do something stupid like me and get a business management degree. I work on networks now because that degree was freaking useless.
Great job!
That's a dope assignment really.

and now i just sit in silence. thanks Tyler for putting these words into history. There are many of us who exist in this state of distress every day. Proud to have experienced you fellas, I hope millions more receive you
It may seem a meaningless cliche, but, at this point in my life, I know how he feels and what he is singing about.
+Andrew Taylor I do too. It's really sad to reach that point. Stay strong friend.
+Andrew Taylor well he is singing about his stolen car radio, he even admitted to that :P
+Jaimie Yue Thank you!!! I needed that.
I'm sorry for making that joke then. May she be healthy and strong, and you aswell.
I remember when this used to be the most popular twenty one pilots song. XD

Cold_ Kid he shaves his head before going on stage, then at the end, which is while he's on stage, it just grows back
They film the end before he shaved his head..
