There was a rumor back in my childhood, that if you hit the yoshi helicopter with a banana peel, a cutscene would play showing the helicopter crashing and unlocking a secret course: Yoshi's Fireland. I tried to hit this helicopter so many times, thinking I missed it because it moves so fast.. Oh, good memories
Wish we got the perfect version of this track somewhere. Anywhere. Imagine the secret tunnel, cameos like the Yoshi helicopter and flower faces, and the star pattern water, but with 8's level of graphics. (And obviously without Daisy Cruiser being ten thousand damn kilometers away)
I think 8’s layout was really fudging good :D like REAAAALLY good, like most technical and complex in the GAAAME good, it’d be really nice to give it as much personality as in double dash :D
One thing I really enjoyed about Mario Kart Double Dash is something you mentioned in this video. You can often see other courses from the game in the background of the one you're on. Each Mario Kart game is more or less a representation of where the Mario series stands at any given time. Super featured a lot of SMW design and references, 64 featured a lot of SM64 design and you could even argue that Super Circuit was a good representation of Mario on the GBA because half that game's courses are straight up taken from Super Mario Kart much like how all the main Mario platformers of the GBA are ports of older Mario games. Double Dash was very clearly influenced by Super Mario Sunshine. Lots of characters from Sunshine appear as spectators or other such things, like the Nokis, Piantas, and Toadsworth at the trophy ceremony. There are also several hazards inspired by Sunshine, like the Cataquacks on Peach Beach or the Wiggler buses in Mushroom City and Mushroom Bridge. However, the best piece taken from Sunshine's design is easily the courses in the background of other courses. It really makes the world feel lived in and grounded. Such a shame future Mario Kart games or Mario in general didn't keep doing that
amazing comment! i knew that Double Dash took a lot of cues from Sunshine, but i never realized that applied to the whole series! the closest we got to courses appearing in the background of others again is Mario Kart 8, which has Toad Harbor visible beneath N64 Rainbow Road, and several courses listed as destinations in Sunshine Airport (if you want to count that).
Heck, Mario Power Tennis even uses the same HUD font and style as Sunshine with the green paintbrush strokes. What does Mario Tennis Aces give us? A stark, generic HUD that looks like it came from Madden 2007.
@@AlextheHomo content? what? mario kart DS has 32 tracks (double the previous games) a full battle mode, VS mode, mission mode, online play for the first time in the series... what the heck are you going on about content? again, you're confusing it with 7

Once again, GameCube Era Mario proves to be the best, at least in my eyes. I love it's more cartoony aesthetic, as well as the more intricate course layout with shortcuts that promote exploration and experimentation.
GameCube era Mario just has the best artstyle. A perfect mix of realism and cartoony with a charm that I think games like New Super Mario Bros and even Mario galaxy somewhat lose

I could be wrong, but I feel like the MK8 Yoshi rock at 5:35 could be a reference to the Yoshi Planet from Mario Galaxy's mission Yoshi's Unexpected Appearance, they look very similar. Great video!
double dash was my first mario kart game and I loved yoshi's circuit ever since I'm a kid. I never knew about that neck shortcut until now. How is this game still surprising me nearly 20 years later??

You have no idea how long I’ve been looking for the 1:52 shortcut. My entire life I’ve tried to go in there and was never able to. I lost this game years ago but I always wondered if you could go there and this video finally showed me I wasn’t crazy
"Obsessing over small details may get irksome at times..." as though that kind of passion isn't the reason we love your videos! ...also, wow. mad props for knowing that's a Shell and not a Saddle Yoshi's got on his back. a true man of culture!
That second shortcut is one of my favorites in the series, its just so secretive compared to others and finding it was super cool Also i never made the connection between entering the tunnel through the nostril and going through it like a damn booger
For the best version of this track, I'd say keep the general design from 8 Deluxe while bringing back the details from Double Dash that were removed or reduced like the stars in the water, the Yoshi Helicopter, and the Daisy Cruiser's details. Also bring back the overhang shortcut and have a ramp at the end of it, it's neat.
I remember discovering the skull shortcut long after I first purchased the game. I was bored and messing around with Wario and Toadette in time trials purposefully failing at every thing in the track and started playing the race backwards when I noticed this tunnel exit, which you can't really see when you play forward because of the way it leads to the turn. I then had to figure out where the hell it lead so I could finally try it going forward. It's really hard to make it in real time with a mushroom, as you have to align perfectly without quite seeing the entrance until the last second, but it is so satisfying to pull off!
Might be a bad opinion, but I miss the cartoony feel mario games used to have, just look at wii and double dash, compared to 8’s realistic style. And we most likely won’t go back to the old colourful styles sadly. Anyone else?
one thing i believe is worth mentioning about the DS version is how it was the first track implemented into the game (not even a nitro track!), as evidenced by the game's data listing it first and being the only track we've seen in footage from 2004, i just believe that's nice to know
I've noticed this is one of the few mario kart tracks that just gets worse and worse every time it comes back, and thats simply because each time it comes back they remove more and more of the fun and wacky elements that made the track so memorable
I am also a HUGE yoshi's circuit fan. so much so that as soon as i unlocked terraforming in animal crossing: new horizons, i made a custom yoshi outfit design and turned my entire island into this track. it was complete with a track including racecar bed racers, a start/finish line, a waterfall around the first shortcut on the hand, different red flowers decorating his spikes, and businesses in the shoe area, and even the small lighthouse island in the distance. Villagers were on the higher parts of the island across his body and my house was over his nose. was very fun to put together!

I love 8’s tracks, they all feel so real. Like I could GO to that Yoshi Circuit, you’d see it filled with actual people and be like “Ooh cool theme park” as opposed to “What are those people doing in that game”, but it still has that game-ish charm, it never overdoes it. I do yearn for the extra shortcut and Yoshicoptor though, and GameCube games are definitely going to give a different vibe no matter what, so it’s totally understandable how someone would prefer it imo
It makes me so excited to see someone else talking about how fun that double dash shortcut was! I remember getting so excited when I finally nailed that shortcut for the first time
People always think I'm crazy when I tell them it's one of my favorite tracks in the series. Seeing someone break down and appreciate all the tiny details that make this track so special was a cathartic experience, thank you
i think the idea of the "two eyes" on the Mario Kart Tour version is to make the eye look like a pacman eye, ya know the eye type that old B&W cartoons used to use for the time, MKT is supposed to be a downsized version of MK for mobile after all, so they probably wanted the course to feel different, so they tried their best to make the eye look different without compromising it too much
The comparisons between DD and 8 here really made me realize why I always felt like something was off/lost in the past. That's why nitpicking can be important

Excuse my french, but there's no fucking way I had no idea that underground shortcut existed all this time. I played on this track so much, even 100% completed Double Dash.
Its hard to tell, but I think the double eyes on Yoshi might not be two eyes, but a cartoon style eye with a glint of light in them, like the eyes that kinda look like pac-man
Interesting tidbit: GCN Yoshi Circuit was one of the first tracks made for both MKDS and Tour seemingly created pretty early in both dev cycles It's the one piece Double Dash that continues to live on strong
Alright, I was mildly amused by your enthusiasm for this track but when 1:40 rolled around, I was ecstatically jumping like an ape on drugs. I DID NOT KNOW THAT. FOR 20 YEARS. WHAT. BEST TRACK IN THE ENTIRE SERIES
yeah, I think the main difference is in Double Dash, the courses feel like they are in the Mario world, like having stars in the water, where 8 is more leaning towards a normal kart racer, it definitely looks great but it lacks the Mario flare
I'm one of those people that have played Mario kart double dash since the GameCube was Nintendo's newest video game system and yet I didn't know there was a shortcut there. They remove the shortcuts from a lot of tracks as far as I'm aware peach Beach for example doesn't have the tunnel at the beginning.
So, in addition to being a Super Mario Sunshine reference, the luxury cruise liner _Sunshine_ also happens to be the venue for Daisy Cruiser. Of all the Mario Kart games, Double Dash seems to do the best job of making everything feel like it's all in one world, not only with tracks in its own game but throughout the series up to that point and even locations from other Mario titles.
You know... I have been thinking about the kart tracks named after the most famous folk of all of the Mushroom Kingdom... Mario Circuit is very true to Mario's all rounder-like posture and the track stays true to it even if gravity is turned on its head. Wario Stadium on the other hand is more gritty, dangerous and strangely mechanical in a way which ties to Wario's more um... brute forced approach to problems. Waluigi Pinball... OH BOY... That place is flashy as a very large Bulb Fruit which drains its source in a brief moment. Waluigi wants to be in the spotlight for so long and what a better way to make a track that gets stuck in every driver's head. So... Yeah... Did I speak too much? Nah probably not.
*IMPORTANT NOTICE:* The title's been changed from "I Colonized Yoshi Circuit" to "Yoshi Circuit is MINE" as to avoid the negative connotations that are associated with the word "colonize". Despite the shortcuts being removed, this track is still one of my favorites in MK8D. It's such a fun left right left right drifting track that flows smoothly
With a killer song to boot
I have never seen that second short cut in my life holy shit
that shortcut is so well hidden that devs forgot about it when developing later version.
I have to find my double dash copy now. I can’t believe I never knew that shortcut was there
5:35 a Yoshi shaped rock out in the yoshian
Yoshi circut looks like yoshi, this is also true for luigi circuit and all of the mario circuits
5:34 yoshi shaped rock in the yoshean
Excuse my french, but there's no fucking way I had no idea that underground shortcut existed all this time. I played on this track so much, even 100% completed Double Dash.
Neat analysis video! Kinda interesting to see how this little landscape & its civilization features have progressed over time. Thanks for uploading!
Its hard to tell, but I think the double eyes on Yoshi might not be two eyes, but a cartoon style eye with a glint of light in them, like the eyes that kinda look like pac-man
So that's why its called Yoshi circuit. Its made like Yoshi. Its so beautiful
Interesting tidbit:
GCN Yoshi Circuit was one of the first tracks made for both MKDS and Tour seemingly created pretty early in both dev cycles
It's the one piece Double Dash that continues to live on strong
The GameCube era of Mario games simply can’t be replicated, and there’s no changing my mind on this fact.
I spat out my drink when I saw that shortcut. All these years and I never saw it when I played DD. Amazing
My ass actually forgot that track is shaped like yoshi. Probably because of whatever they did to it in mk8
Me, watching this video: There is a shortcut WHERE??
Me, 30 seconds later, when listening to the MKDS section: oh, nvm
So, in addition to being a Super Mario Sunshine reference, the luxury cruise liner _Sunshine_ also happens to be the venue for Daisy Cruiser. Of all the Mario Kart games, Double Dash seems to do the best job of making everything feel like it's all in one world, not only with tracks in its own game but throughout the series up to that point and even locations from other Mario titles.
Nintendo: Hahaha it’s funny you think you can claim one of my many islands
We should have Double Dash Yoshi Circuit with MK8 graphics.
This video made me realize that Yoshi shouldn't be able to see past his nose.
Alt title: getting mad because the ds version of yoshi circuit removed everything
I totally never realized this course was shaped like Yoshi
i love how he is genuinely happy while exploring these maps you earned a sub
Love how genuinely enthusiastic he sounds explaining everything
I came in expecting you to plan a small town with this space, came out disappointed yet still enjoyed the vid.
