I was building a movie set in Shreveport, la. He was the only celebrity that said hey to me the whole time. I still remember that.
Cody Adams I want to meet him so bad
You can tell he's a real one.
I can definitely believe it. If you or anyone else hasn't seen David talk about the time he met Jim Belushi, I recommend giving it a listen to see just how polar opposite two Hollywood "stars" can be (I put the word "stars" in quotation due to it referencing Jim, who was far from being one even when he was still getting work). I get what he's saying about the gene thing. My dad was a meth addict, had the empathy level of a serial killer, and was abusive both mentally and physically. I'm glad he abandoned me while I was pretty young, but I always worried about turning into him. I thought it was hereditary and that I was doomed to be coming just like him. It's still in the back of my head to this day, but I'm nothing like him. I'm raising my daughter as a single dead and I don't touch drugs. The person you develop into is solely dependent on the person you want to be. You create your path and your personality.
You are doing great! Take care of yourself and your child. I believe in you.
Ant Thomas no, no it usually isn’t. You care enough to ask the question, which means you care, you are okay, you have a conscience. Trust in that.

Tobias is the best thing about Arrested Development. I can watch him a million times and still be in stitches.
I love David Cross (Mister Show and his stand up are my favorite), but Jessica Walter’s character was the best, followed by Buster. I think Cross would actually agree.

The trauma of abandonment can have real, lasting impact. The pain never subsides. But making sure you don't pass it along drives your relationship with your kids. At least, it does mine. It's not a gene. The part that holds the pain and amplifies it, however, is. I've struggled my entire adult life, never realizing the cause of the struggle were the events I'd blown off years before.
Same here. I’m 34 and still becoming aware of different ways my childhood still affects me. I can understand why people fail to seek help, because it’s confusing. It’s hard to be aware of what you’ve always lived with. I hope you’re able to get the help and resources you need to cope with your struggles.
Have you heard of attachment theory?
Realizing I had fearful avoidant attachment, due to childhood...and tools to fix it, has been life changing for me.
I see myself, others, and the world so differently. Still doing the work, but have come farther than any work I’d done in therapy.
The Personal Development School helped me a lot.

Its just a choice, it doesn't make you enlightened or a hero. It just means you made a choice that's right for you.
I could never understand how a parent could abandon their offspring. To me, it isn't natural.
I would think a parent who abandons their family is either super depressed or a narcissist. Narcissists don't really connect with others, everything is all about them. Their lack of empathy makes them terrible parents, spouses, siblings and friends.

Mr Show is the best comedy show, ever.
I can definitely say that you don’t have to follow the path of your parents. My dad for example is a compassionate, understanding, and empathetic human who was always there for me. However, I’m a self-interested, borderline sociopath. It always works out in the end.

Saw David do standup a few years ago here in Asheville. He's so great
I bought all 4 seasons of mr show 15 years ago and know every line of every scene haha
Mr. Show is where I fist fell in love with David cross.
If David saw me on the street he would know immediately that I knew him from Mr. Show, and if he was REALLY good, which he is, he'd narrow it down even more to knowing precisely what sketch I most associate with him, which is, and I'm sure I'm not alone - the audition scene where the casting director keeps interrupting him thinking he's finished with this monologue when he very much is not. Thank you, David, for all that you contribute to the comedy world.
I LOVE him and Odenkirk so I can see how they would be partners, though I didn't realize it until more recently. I actually first got into Cross from Tim and Eric and then Arrested Development because I was late to the party on that show. Love it now!
You can see that he still loves his dad as much as he hates him, and he feels both to the extreme. And I totally get it. It's complicated but I get it
Everybody watch Mr. Show, if you haven't. It's the best sketch show ever.
He's my favorite Analyst and Therapist, hands down ;)
My favorite Cross role was a bit role on Newsradio. At the time I was real into his standup so I loved seeing his cameos in tv shows
David Cross is truly a good and talented guy.
The most difficult part of being a kid whose parent up and left is seeing that it had nothing to do with anything about you and your worth as a child and a person, but was about the abandoning parent's inability or desire to be a parent or to be a person in a family, period. Not so much running from being a parent specifically to you, but from the dedication to fulfilling the role of parent. Not that this intellectual realization will fill the longing for a dad or eliminate any hurt and or anger for this missing person not being there, but hopefully it can be a first step to rebuilding one's self-esteem and feeling of worth. And maybe it can be the root of the rebuilding of understanding, empathy and sense of redemption to realize that although the missing person's act left an emotional mark on you, you are your own, separate person who can see how the dynamics of this whole thing went down.

Any scene where a guy gets defeated by a small net is good by me.
He was a guest at a hotel I worked for, and I was excited by the idea of meeting him -- even if only briefly, and with a firm, professional LACK of fanboying whatsoever. We really have to restrain ourselves in that industry. When he came through the lobby, we made eye contact briefly, but it was clear that he was NOT in the mood to talk, so I respectfully went back to browsing on the computer as though it was no big deal.
After seeing this, I'll now always wonder if he would have known I was a Mr. Show fanatic.. I probably would have given it away with a sly little "Terra-daloo" added to some innocuous hotel-speak.
That respect is the best thank you gift you can give as a fan.
He perfectly summed up my feelings when it comes to having children. My father left a little while after I was born leaving my mom with two small children less than 2 years old. I've always wondered if there's a switch in my mind or a recessive gene that's gonna 'activate' somewhere down the line and make me want to leave. Subjecting a kid to 18 fatherless years and being thrown into adulthood as confused as I am now. I honestly can't even bare the thought.
What I _do_ know now %100 is that I'm definitely not ready to have kids. I'm just going from there and hopefully one day I do feel that I'm ready to bring another me into the world.
