  • This is how I used to teach people to avoid end grain break out while planing and how to hold a chisel when vertical paring. Make sure that your tools are sharp - refer to my videos on sharpening plane blades and chisels for easy and quick sharpening techniques.

So many videos watched, and this is by far the simplest, easiest, and the best.

Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying for 2 hours now to figure this out myself.

On longer lengths of wood, like say a door bottom suing an electric plainer,; by plaining one end making 1 or 2 passes into the wood, about and inch or so. then starting a run the other end of the wood after, it stops, the breakouts. Just make sure the plainer blades do not travel that last inch to the edge. Next run just reverse the start side go in about and inch again. then start the run the opposite end, you will not get breakout doing it that way. Also should there be any problems the shallower the cut the less the problem 99.99% of the time. Best make 10 passes than 2 and screw the job up!

Yes I do that too. But for bench work its either this way or a small chamfer on the end grain and plain towards it.

I will give that a go for you. Give me a couple of weeks to get back into the garage and get things sorted. I will show you the way I used to teach the kids.
