10 years later and I still bump this weekly for my nightly sesh. Glad you guys found success but even more glad you guys found each other. A good group to jam with is worth more than all the money in the world. For many years to come. Keep it groovin

the lion rubbing himself to the groove of the song is such a nice touch. and i mean that seriously, the whole atmosphere of this video is so smooth and relaxing. you guys did this song justice, thank you.
I love you guys for this. Not a lot of jazz that’s new for us young people to enjoy in this day and age. Taking one of my all time favorite rap groups from the 90’s and combining it with one of my favorite jazz group it made my day. I’m 16 and play guitar in my jazz combo at school and u guys encouraged me to pursue music as a whole and really push and challenge my character and goals
Damn being a jazz player/hip-hop fan I gotta say I'm blown away. The skill it takes to keep a strong groove and play nice melodies as a trio is ridiculous you guys are killin every single one of you
I became a fan when I first heard "Speaking Gently" which was featured on the NBA 2K19 soundtrack and then I saw their appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series. These guys are the truth!
At first I thought he had been drinking it, then when he started to play, I wondered just how long they'd had that same bottle at this same volume/amount lol.
@@alb2935 No, it actually has a tone to it, which also happens to be the root note of the song if my ears are correct. So he meant harmonize, not resonate

It is called a Rhodes piano. Instead of mallets hitting strings they hit tuned metal plates- it has a gorgeous bell sound. People often experimented with it using effects and distortion. The sound he gets in this song uses chorus, flanger and reverb to get the echo effect plus a little distortion for when he's pushing the keys harder. The instrument itself is an electric rhodes piano called the KORG SV-1, highly recommended.
I remember when this first came out people were hypercritical. I remember reading one review in Vice or something, where they complained about the bottle. It was like, "Then the drummer takes a solo on a 40. Whatever" lol
That was nice!!!!! It's not often that you find young guys that know how to play an upright bass & these cats got some REAL jazz in their hearts. To + Ronnie Foster, I've always loved your stuff that I could find here in B'ham , Al but jazz wasn't the big thing here back in the day. I heard this a couple of years before I heard it on The Wayans Bros. Show but didn't know that ATCQ had made it. It figures that it was from a jazz piece because that's what ATCQ, Eric B & Rakim & several other NY acts used on their tracks. I should have Known that it was from one of YOUR songs. x)
that would be very interesting, both amazing bands, I think The Roots would take the W though, they just have too much experience performing live. I would pay lots of money to witness that battle though aha
Joel Therrien I know this comment is like a year old but I have to disagree, ive been to a bbng concert and they preform better live than any other band I’ve ever seen.
Jacob Core i know this comments 3 months old at this point but have you ever seen the roots live? They are some of the best in the biz enegy wise and technically. Also, They’ve been around for over 2 decades where as bbng has only been a band about 6 or 7 years
That was great music and a good goof w the 40. The HAMMOND organ had its moment in jazz. When I wish BBNG had a horns or a singer, I take a breath, recall JIMMY SMITH, and relax. The minimal grooves appear too elementary, but I enjoy the slighest variation in pitch or timbre from any of the musicians. For example, the 40 highhat was genius. What a contrast to the bass, left hand organ work and the earlier drumming.
The 40 oz is easily the most underrated piece of a drum kit.
bluemonkjd I thought this was a joke (it was just there as a prop) when I first started watching, then he started killing it with the bottle.
bluemonkjd
are you kidding me i use it when im on my mpc.😋
anything can be a drum sound pill bottles make the dopest shakers a lil delay and reverb perfect

Why do double bassists in bands like this always rock out so hard it's rad
Because they are as close to the "groove" as it gets, since bass/double-bass is the standard "grooving" instrument.
no one wants a mediocre double bass bro!
Because double bass players learned the real deal
Because they have to really rock it otherwise you wouldn't hear it.
I need a double bass.

Hello from the year 2023. Still listening, still loving.
13 years later, playing the 40oz is legendary.
I would be in awe if they also covered Butter by ATCQ with Leland Whitty playing the sax line.
That would be orgasmic
